New Photos from Wayno (BB Bait) of Coco, New Gonzaga Bridge, etc.

David K - 3-16-2013 at 11:23 AM

On March 16, 2013, Wayno sent this, and the following photos:

"... I'll send some photos and you can post what ever you want in what ever sequence you deem best. It is interesting that Coco now travels back and forth to Ensenada via San Felipe since the new road is as far as it is now. He is in very good shape and sharp as a tack. He is not to worried about the new road bypassing him as he thinks the overall new traffic situation will bring in plenty of business for him. He stated he is already noticing the increase... Wayno"

New Boat Launch at Cinco Islas
KM 114, turn in at the restaurant, half mile down to the ramp.. $15 bucks a day, so far.

End of the road...
But everyone drives around this for another half mile of pavement!

These photos are getting redundant, I really don't notice much difference since the last time we were down here. They are doing some shoulder work but that's about it right now, 3/14/13.

[Thank you Wayno!]:light::cool:

Dear BB Bait/ Wayno,

I don't think any of us who love the Cortez side of Baja think your photos are redundant! I wish I could go south with you each trip, and with your photos I do!!

I don't mind posting them here for you, but I also would like to help anyone having difficulty trying to add their photos, to please let me try and walk you through the process for the time that me, deno, or helpful others are not around, so you can be independent...

Photobucket has returned the Upload Options feature to their new format, so resizing is once again a snap! The above photos were resized to 640 pixels, and the width of Nomad is 800... so that should be the maximum.

It seems since November of last year, there has been some reasonable progress. The extension of the asphalt to near the bridge, the addition of the work on the bridge itself. We seem to view progress in the most difficult locations with resources that are limited as slow and a "Mexican" way of change.

For those familiar with the southern California area, specifically San Diego, I would point to a rather simple renovation of an existing bridge over I-15. The Carrol Canyon bridge over I-15 renovation took over 6 months to complete by the best equipped nation in the world with massive resources within minutes of need...including the most luxuriously accomidated workmen living the highlife with their superior wages!

Let's be patient and marvel at what these men are doing.

The Transpeninsular Highway 1967-1973 and the Puertecitos to Gonzaga Bay Highway 2007-2013... Each taking 6 years to complete from where pavement had previously ended... One was 750 miles of new pavement and the other 45 miles... Perhaps equally dramatic in the changes it will bring to once quiet, peaceful places.

The final 38 miles from that bridge to Laguna Chapala will be a real butt kicker of changes as semi trucks and everyone else shortcuts to Mexicali, saving maybe 200 miles and hours of drive time. Its the difference between living on a dead end street and living on a highway... which carries with it both good and bad changes for the few who live along Hwy. 5 and the many who will be relocationg along it!

boat ramp

That ramp @cinco islas looks pretty good. Has anyone used it? Is there camping there?

bbbait - 3-18-2013 at 09:06 PM

Hey Yak... lots of open space there, but nothing organized yet. Check in with the guy at the restaurant, and he will direct you, to probably something under his control and may want a few bucks. But lots of areas near that are close to the water and not connected to anyone that you can dry camp on for short periods... or forever, until someone comes along..

The owner is Agustin Ramirez. He also has "5 ISLANDS LAVA ROCK" on Av. Mar Rojo in Centro San Felipe. He owns all the land from the road to the beach and south to where the old trailers are and the beach turns to rocks as it goes around the corner.

Camp anywhere there after checking with him (if he doesn't recognize your vehicle) although there are a lot of flies on the south end of the beach, rattlesnakes also, had one camped next to the right rear wheel of the van in the shade for a couple of weeks last trip.

I told him about BN when he was getting the restaurant ready and he thought giving a discount would help bring business so he's amenable.

He did need a 3 or 4 hp pump (like Briggs & Stratton powered,...) to pump water up from the truck to the tank on top of the restaurant if someone were to arrange that we would have a friend forever for BN's.

The top of the map below...

Are there any pictures of the camp site and what the turn off looks like?

No turn-off really.

The cafe is right on the road (only building there directly on the road) and there is a regulation viewpoint parking lot right in front of it. You can see the whole beach area below and the islands stick out right in front of you.

You will probably see some old trailers and a couple of skiffs at the south end of the beachfront before it goes around a small rocky headland. He uses that area for visiting fishermen.
