"Currently in Mexico one in four households in the country is headed by a woman. Life Insurance for Women Heads of Household is the institutional
response by the Mexican Government to support and assume joint responsibility with their children and adds to other efforts, such as the Pension
Program for adults over 65 years to build a Universal Social Security System.
The Mexican Government develops and supports various programs for women like Childcare facilities to support working mothers, Care Program on
Reproductive Health and Gender Equality in Health, Programs aimed at reducing maternal death rates, Programs for Women in the Agricultural Sector and
the National Program for the Social Prevention of Violence and Crime.
All of these programs and actions are part of a single goal: to make a transversal policy that aligns the efforts all across the government to ensure
the full integration and development of women into society.
"In case if a head of household becomes absent, the state will financially support her children who are under 24 years of age, with an income that
will allow them to meet their basic needs and continue their education all the way through college," said President Enrique Peņa Nieto on this topic.

These programs sound great. I hope women are able to use them to improve their opportunities to work and provide quality care for their children.
Makes me wonder: Is this an area where Mexico is surpassing the US? Are women given more pro-family services with these government programs in Mexico
than they receive in the US?
I realize this may sound absurd, and will likely lead to a spirited debate, especially given violent crime in places like Juarez, where anti-women
crime is horrible.
But consider: re:maternal health outcomes, maternal death rates in CA have been increasing, primarily due to post-delivery hemorrhage (bleeding) that
may be related to poor health and obesity of mothers. And funding for many healthcare programs for pregnant women and mothers have been cut.
Since most childcare in the US is private, it is often so expensive that parents have to calculate if it's worth it, or if most of the "extra" income
will go to pay for the childcare itself. And if you are a single parent, well, hopefully you have a family member to look after your children.
And as for violence prevention, last month the US federal government finally passed the "Violence Against Women Act" but only after opposition that
delayed reauthorization for years.
So... are programs for women in Mexico better than comparable programs for women in the US when it comes to their health, their children's care, and
their safety?

I think it is fantastic here in Baja (and perhaps all of Mexico, I don't know) that every single woman is entitled to FREE pap smears. This is just
outstanding. Does not matter if you are Mexican or American or from anywhere else - you are covered. It takes a month to get the results, but one is
covered and I think this is amazingly progressive.
