June in Mulege

cometkrazy - 3-23-2013 at 07:24 PM

Hello: We are going to Mulege in June to do a little fishing and whatever else we can do for fun. What kind of fish are on the bite during June? I like to fish from a boat or the shore. Any coments or assistance will be welcome.
Regards, Brian

June can be one of the best times of the year in that area. Yellowtail are still around in abundance if you know where to look. We get lots of big fish that time of the year on live bait in the deeper sections. The Dorado are normally showing up pretty well and you look for weedlines and drift currents to help you zero in on the fish. Last year the small fish were so plentiful, I took out my flyrod and could spend at least a couple of hours catching and releasing small dorado. Billfish are also starting to make a good show if the water temps are up. We get a lot of sails, plenty of Striped Marlin and at certain times some really nice Blues are out there. There is a small amount of shore fishing done for cabrilla and basses out past Punta Chivato, but most shore fishing is a little overfished. A few guys throw small spoons and find some small snook in the river on a rising tide.
The San Lucas Yellowtail Tournament will be held on the 18th and 19th of May and there are normally some very large yellowtail weighed in for that event. And the Bulls Only Tournament at Punta Chivato will be held June 21,22,23. and is a great time to meet a lot of fishermen, have a great time, and raise a lot of money for various charities in the area.

Hmmm..... a yellowtail tournament on the 18th and 19th? We will be coming into San Lucas on the 17th. What is required to enter the tournament?

Damion, it is really easy, just pay the entry fee, make sure you have a fishing license, which you will need to enter. It is a one day blowout that has been going on for many years at San Lucas Cove and was started by San Marcos Mike Kanzler. The captain's meeting will be at the Bahia Restaraunt in the cove, so I will get you the final details when we finish them up.
