Don't suppose this has 4-wheel drive... but how does it handle these gnarly Baja roads?

I've always loved those Things... and we're looking for another car.

They are Very basic Transportation .When in Acpulco a very long time ago we rented one . The next morning I called The Agency and told them to bring us something else. We wound up with a New 9 Passenger VW Van It wasnt too bad.

A typical VW, however has more weight. Still rear wheel drive, handles normal graded dirt roads. Not much for off roading. A great drive around car. Correct designation for the German built model is the Type 181, more commonly known as the "Thing"

I remember almost buying one in Loreto area a lot of years ago. They wanted $3k then, and it had to be at least 20 years ago. Unless this is a rust bucket, it's a steal at that price. I've seen them advertised in the states upwards to $15,000.00 in average shape. someone better jump on this one if you've got the money and running condition is o.k. I'd check it real close for rust if it's been at Chivato. fun car to drive, and perfect for Baja. "fun in the sun" car. 4 door convertible anything as it becomes older starts cllimbing in price. Look at the prices of those in the 30's & 40's era today. If it is rust free, at that price, it would be almost worth driving down from Oregon to buy & bring back. Providing as was mentioned earlier, 'importable".

I have had 2 of them..I disagee that they are not suitable for off roading..They will go almost anywhere except for places you shouldnt go anyhow...Excellent buy if as stated.....Teenage daughter proof...

BajaRat - 3-28-2013 at 08:59 AM

How about rust..... whats the general body condition. Tnx Russ.

bajafreaks - 3-28-2013 at 09:23 AM

I'm a VW guy and that looks to be a good deal and long as its not too rusted. Take a look at a website called "The Samba" its the most popular VW site going, check out their classified section there are a lot of 74 things in there and you maybe under priced, you could always put it in their classified section...it will sell.

acadist - 3-28-2013 at 08:37 PM

wasn't the 'Thing' based on just a WWII German army vehicle?

wessongroup - 3-28-2013 at 08:42 PM

Just about "broke in" ........ appears the "airconditioning" still works

Great "ride" :):)
