How tall are your blooming agaves?

durrelllrobert - 3-30-2013 at 11:18 AM

This is my front yard in Punta Banda. Checkout the blooming agaves on right side in back:

.....I thought I had the best landscaped yard in Baja :O

What a great area you have designed!

durrelllrobert - 3-30-2013 at 12:35 PM

Thanks Dino. My house is 2 away from DENNIS'; same view.

vandenberg - 3-30-2013 at 12:50 PM

Impressive!

BajaBlanca - 3-30-2013 at 01:53 PM

so beautiful !

DENNIS - 3-30-2013 at 01:58 PM

Right between the Goal Posts is Ensenada. There's a lot to see over there on a clear day and at night, the city lights are a good picture.
Bob took these shots on a particularly foggy day.

So...you are saying that DENNIS is your gardener? :-)

I know you spent hundreds of hours on that living canvas.

Nah.....not me, Deno, but we do hire the same man. He does more in four hours than I could do in a month.....even when I was in one piece.

Judging from that wire I see in the photo.....you guys have a drop off cliff right there?

As I told you before DENNIS.....you got one of the best locations of Baja.

THe Bufadora road is right below the Agaves and on the other side of the road the land falls off to the water.
This will give you a better picture of what I'm saying:

DENNIS email me a $ number. I have a cousin that was just talking to me about him and several buddies looking for a Baja place. They currently have a nest in Rio Hardy and another Baja location.

DENNIS - 3-31-2013 at 08:30 AM

U2U Deno.

Fabulous garden! Congratulations on the fruits of your hard work.
Curious—what is the low wire by the agaves? Some sort of
alarm wire?

When I first bought the place there was a problem with stray cattle and horses coming in and eating plants so an electric fence was installed. No longer a problem; just haven't taken it down.

mcfez - 3-31-2013 at 09:11 AM

Oh! Hell we got the same issues here on the farm. The 3 horses will eat and trample everything you love :-) They leave the stuff we hate... alone :-)

DENNIS.....There is a letter in your u2.

What a grand garden and view, Robert.

On the question about blooming agaves, I'm no help. The only "bloomin' agaves" I have are contained in glass and not very tall. Their "blossoms", however, are gloriously rewarding. Wonderful bouquet, too. They would most certainly enhance the view asea from your garden.

Mine are nearly 10 years old and still have not bloomed. How come?

That's why they are called Century Plants. According to my neighbor mine last bloomed 20+ years ago. The ones you see now are babies from the last bloom.

PS: Once the stalk started growing it took over 2 months to reach full height and develope the blooms.

Say Bob.....
Would you mind doing an "photo walk" of your garden? Would love to see the details. I promised not to use the shots in the OT ;D

Or give them to Joe? OK, do you just want the current condition or starting from day 1 layout? One thing that won't show in photos is the fact that I used about a 2-3 " layer of beach sand under all the walkways(pavers and gravel) and no weeds have ever grown there.

Leo - 4-1-2013 at 08:12 PM

OK D-robert, century plants. But if I look at neighbors that planted them 3-4 years ago and are blooming with stalks passing the electric wires along the road, I feel there bis someting wrong with mine. Soil perhaps? Specimen, arte there fast ones?

Maybe they transplanted adult plants that were already 20+ years old?
Mine came from the babies produced by an adult plant that then died.

Here's the best I could do since I just have a cheap camera and don't know the names for all the free starts and stuff that just volunteered:

View from Livingroom

View looking towards house

First Geranium planted fro 8 starts

Xenias after gophers killed a bunch

Succulent garden from free starts

Don't ask me what these are but the starts were free

rustic bridge over dry wash

watering hole for quail (water to be added)

EDIT TO ADD MORE

5 year old pencil plant? from free start

gardener's handy work

3 year old store bought Azuela

CFE easement beyond

Red Apple's not ready to bloom

East property boundary

For some reason, these shots don't begin to do the vibrant colors justice.
Judgeing from the lack of shadows you shot these around 11:am. Id try a bit earlier and get a bit more depth out of the shadows.
Sunlight from straight above is very unflattering for plants, and portraits.

DENNIS - 4-20-2013 at 06:36 PM

Oh yeah....turn on the sprinklers for a while before you shoot. A dry garden looks dead.

mcfez - 4-21-2013 at 07:46 AM

So this wonderland of yours ....must make DENNIS's house look like a dump ;D

Absolute eye candy. I thank you for taking the time to post these pictures for us.

Love the Rock Rose..........I see you have those too. You are lucky that the jack rabbits are not dining in your yard.......I have mega issues in San Felipe with them. They actually ate down my young Date Palms!
