Bank Cards not working

redmesa - 3-31-2013 at 07:45 AM

Why are my debit cards not working all of a sudden at the ATMs in GN and Vizcaino? They worked in Ensenada but not further south. Has anyone had a similar surprise?

fish101 - 3-31-2013 at 07:54 AM

Get ahold of your bank, they might have put a hold on your account, after they saw that it was used in Ensenada, Mexico...I always inform my bank that I am traveling in Mexico for six months or so, to eliminate that problem. Also, Debit cards from Canada with the "CHIP" might not work down here either or at least at some banks...

watizname - 3-31-2013 at 08:10 AM

Did you call your bank before you left? I always notify them befor I go and have never had a problem. :light:

chuckie - 3-31-2013 at 08:11 AM

What they said...

redmesa - 3-31-2013 at 08:13 AM

I have been using them for several months here at the Bancomer but just recently they stopped working. There has never been a problem with my banks and the debit cards. I will give them a call however to check that they have not had a change of policy. Thanks

BajaBlanca - 3-31-2013 at 08:15 AM

yup, we have had the same problem.

Hopefully someone answers on Easter Sunday.

Come over to La Bocana if you get in a real pinch.

WOW......and Bancomer charges 70Ps for each use of their machine while all others are in the 25Ps range.

Bank Card

J.P. - 3-31-2013 at 08:37 AM

I used mine in San Diego a couple weeks ago to make a rather large Purchase. When I returned home to Ensenada there was a message on the phone to call their Card anti fraud number.
It' Good that they watch.

Another Bank???

bajaguy - 3-31-2013 at 09:58 AM

Just by chance have you tried another bank's ATM???

I have had mine rejected by one bank ATM, walked 2 feet to another bank ATM and it worked......YMMV

when there is only one bank what else are you going to do?

woody with a view - 3-31-2013 at 10:33 AM

is this your bank? http://www.centralbank.gov.cy/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=1&lang=...

msteve1014 - 3-31-2013 at 10:48 AM

A little off topic, but has anyone used the Telecomm Telegrafos offices to transfer money from the U.S. to BCS. It would seem to be valuable for people living in towns with no ATMs.

redmesa - 3-31-2013 at 11:35 AM

Thanks Blanca, we will be in BA another month so maybe everything will be normal at the banks after the holidays. We may pop over to visit with you anyway. Are you planning a trip to BA anytime soon? We'd love to see you.

bajagrouper - 3-31-2013 at 12:27 PM

Maybe because of Semana Santa they are just empty.......

Leo - 3-31-2013 at 12:33 PM

Had a simmilar problem with a card that was not used for 3 months. They lock it up for your safety but a pain when it happens.

micah202 - 3-31-2013 at 01:14 PM

....perhaps you ran out of funds:tumble:

..........or the machine did!

IIRC... last time in Ensenada it was more than 30 pesos in HSBC. Another bank on that plaza, Scotia bank, simply didn't react to my chipped debit card at all. Probably what others said - some ATM don't read card with chips.

redmesa - 3-31-2013 at 03:17 PM

Thanks to all but I know all these things. I've spent a lot of time over years at ATMs in Baja using a variety of bank cards but the last couple times none of my cards worked. It may be a new anti-Canada thing :). I will start calling around in a few days after the holidays and see what is going on.

My Scotia Bank debit card from Mexico wouldn't work in Canada even though Scotia's headquarters are there.
Turnabouts are fair play.

Please let us know what is happening. We depend on that ATM and will do so until one is built in Bahia Asuncion ---- soon.;D

Jim/Liisa - 3-31-2013 at 03:40 PM

A lot of the banks in Mexico and Baja have done away with the magnetic strips and gone to chips on the ATM cards.

redmesa - 4-1-2013 at 12:07 PM

I've got the chips. This started on March 12 and still our cards did not work on March 27th in Baja Sur. Ensenada and San Quintin were okay. We use several different banks for our cards so it was not one particular bank it was 3 of the banks. Two were Canadian and one was a global one so I am thinking that something was going on with the local banks here in Vizcaino and GN. I have a Mexican account also so I will check in with the bank next week. :/

BajaBlanca - 4-1-2013 at 02:11 PM

I hadn't read thru all the posts to see that you have several cards and tried several towns/ATMs.

very odd, indeed.

come over and visit, anytime. if you give me advance notice, you get lunch :))

DavidE - 4-1-2013 at 02:13 PM

I have FOUR ATM cards and frequently get many responses out of BanComer ATM machines using one after another:

1. Card is not readable

2. The RED (network) is down.

3. Your bank does not authorize this transaction

4. You are bankrupt

5. Out of service

6. Only 100 pesos total is available at this time.

With a seventy some-odd peso fee, BanComer can kiss my ***. I just know if I keep using the machine in Vizcaino something weird is going to happen like, it will swallow the card and the screen will read.

"Stupid! We tried to warn you 44 times that we do not want your business!"

redmesa - 4-1-2013 at 02:36 PM

That about covers it David

In San Felipe I have only been charged around 25 peso by Bancomer, same as other bank which has not been accepting "foreign chipped cards"
