I had to look it up:

http://www.gransueno.com/

bajajudy - 4-4-2013 at 02:29 PM

I havent been there since it was called bay of the dead but my quess is the accomodations are pricey.
Let us know what you find.
Try googling bay of dreams, baja

paranewbi - 4-4-2013 at 03:43 PM

Accomidations are pricey. If your flying into la paz just get a rental car, it's not that far of a drive. The restaurant at the bay is excellent and is usually empty for breakfast. You can arrange for a boat with one of the guys at the lauch area or you can do that in la paz also. You'll see the vans from the outfitters there.

If you want to pay for the full blown luxury that's up to you, but for the money, you can get to the bay in short order from la paz and get to see more than just a fancy hotel and a bay. Much more to see and do around la paz and blow your big bucks on.

jeffg - 4-4-2013 at 04:19 PM

Check out La Ventana, that would put you reasonably close.

Before the marketing folks changed the name, it was Bahia de los Muertos:

You know how it goes here, David. BN is like a tidal zone with its lows and its highs. People come and people go. The sandbox is constantly changing.
oooops....I'm out of metaphors.

Love your maps, David. This one reminded me of the ferry we took out of Pichilingue, La Paz to Topolobompo in early '70's (Salvatierra). When we got home we read that the very same ferry sank with all the cars on it. I think all the people made it off, but what a mess that was. Keep the maps coming.

Welcome to BN where the residents are wild and wooly and full of fleas!

There is a new, very small boutique hotel in El Triunfo, it was open in February. El Triunfo is a wonderful place to spend some time in. The town is being revitalized by arts-minded folk and the history of the area is very interesting. There is a great restaurant there. The hotel name escapes me (it's just down from the art gallery) but it would make a nice stop and an easy drive from San Antonio to the coast.

There is also another option called Rancho La Venta not farther along towards San Bartolo. It is a beautiful place in the mountains on a historic property. I have met the owners and toured the ranch and winery and recommend it. Fantastic mountain views and very quiet.
Rancho la Venta

Not aware of less expensive options as we stay in our RV. As you get closer to the East Cape, prices climb. If you're staying longer, consider VRBO.

Have a good trip,
W

The moon website has excellent info on most sites of THE Baja. On this link provided....you will see a list of services at the left of the page...it has surrounding area info also. Nice that there is a price range list for accommodations.

For current maps that are updated of the area you wish to visit: http://www.moon.com/maps

Also...provides decent history and maps of non Americanized but true Baja callings.

:..........The dark name of this pretty bay dates back to the 18th century, but its exact origins are unknown. At least two later incidents in history validated the name: In 1885 a Chinese ship landed and lost a crew of 18 to yellow fever after port authorities in La Paz refused to admit the ship. And in the early 1900s, when a group of farmers from the United States attempted to cultivate the land around the bay, the effort for some ended in starvation."

On the bright side it has become a pretty good reef. I picked up a couple nice YT off it last month.

The use of muerto is not always in regard to a dead person. Old timers in the area have to me that there used to be moorings for ships offloading the ore from Triunfo in the bay (part of the dock is still there). Another translation of muertos is the deadweight holding the mooring on the bottom of the water. (http://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish_to_english/ships_sailing_m...). Historically it makes sense, paticularly since Muertos Bay is used by cruisers as a safe anchorage going to and from La Paz and mainland Mexico and can be quite crowded. It's too bad so many of our historical place names are sanitized and therefore meaningless.

Skipjack Joe - 4-6-2013 at 10:38 AM

As I recall Bahia de Los Muertos was named for a mishap. Some extranjeros wandered into the area, became disoriented from the heat, and perished.

I think they should have kept the name. Suenos sounds like something a real estate promoter would come up with.

DianaT - 4-6-2013 at 11:33 AM

One should use the Moon Travel books with caution. There is lots of false and missing information both in the Baja one and the one for the Mainland. And it is not just because things can change quickly, it is just mis-information. One of the authors of the Baja book also has no problem with just using other people's photos without permission, until she gets caught!

But, it can be used, just with caution.

TripAdvisor seems to be a lot more reliable than the ever-out-of-date Moon book.

mcfez - 4-6-2013 at 12:50 PM

Moon books do get outdated fast. That's why I use their web services. Updated often. Moon is like any other source of data including stuff that get's posted here on the BN.......nothing is perfect :-) I do however have used Moon with very few issues..... for twenty years ....just my experience.

He is about 5 properties away from me, he is the only Mexican who owns a resort in the entire area. What a name, it is actually David de La Paz and his legal name. I am sure he can arrange a local boat that will pick you up in front of the hotel and fish same places that Bay of Dreams does or some north of the island if the fish are there..

give me a shout if ya stay there, well head our for dinner.

It's over 11 miles from that motel in La Vetana to Pt Arena and you still need to go further to get to Los Muertos. That's a pretty fair long boat ride before you get into fish. In the afternoon you'll riding back those 11 miles into the wind from Muertos to La Ventana. The best fishing is off the south end of Cerralvo in the early morning. Again, being closer is better so that you can be there at the 'magic' time.

A launch at Muertos or Pt Arena might be better.

Morning no wind, south end of cerralvo is 11 miles. Not all are wanting to shell out $$$$$ on a room at Bay of Dreams a night. It is darn nice, and has a few rich and famous style pools.

In the summer there is not much wind in Ventana Bay a bit more Sea of Cortez in the afternoon. LaVentana now has one concrete boat launch and a second planned.

Some do drive to Bay of Dreams and go out there in the winter..

Generally most leave from here.. In the winter fishing can be good north end of the island too, which makes it a shorter trip than going out from Bay of Dreams.

that indeed is interesting. The rumor I had heard they sent a boatload of people with small pox to die there. But I always believed it had to do with it is calm water "dead water" was my take.

LaPaz was not too crowded... San Antonio was actually the larger city way back.
I could not get this image to appear.

I was just over there last week & stayed in La Ventana. Less than a half hour drive to Muertos. Go to La Ventana websites. I stayed at Baja Joes and looked at a few others--there are many! Beautiful views! Tio

Tio Tomas,

Check your U2U

Can you still RV on the beach

neilm81301 - 6-3-2013 at 08:53 AM

at Suenos, like my folks did in the 70's?

Before the highway, they'd pull their trailer down the mainland, and take the ferry to La Paz.

The old man would catch Sierras from his tin boat, & get tubs of greens and vegetables from the fincas.

Sounded like the good life to me.

Neil

nope... no rvs on that beach allowed. over here in LaVentana we have a few free and a campground that has water and many RVs. The free beaches you would have them to yourself over here at night. During the day in the winter about 50 kiters will drive out and launch from there.

My original edition Sea of Cortez, the Sunset book, seems to say that the Vagabundos (No, not the club) used the area to bury their dead.

It seems like the name change and all the signs that say B. d. SUENOS - put up by the developer, I think - happened right about the time they put in a beautifully smooth paved road from San Antonio to just north of San Juan de los Planes, replacing a washboard nightmare no rich gringo would tolerate. All the better to get you from the Los Cabos airport to the ritzy resort. That was around 2007, I think, right before the real estate crash.

Udo - 6-7-2013 at 07:10 PM

We did the drive from El Sargento to Ensenada de Los Muertos. Not worth the drive. There was a gate at the entrance to the bay, and unless you had a reservation, you could not even drive by the area.
Also, The map shows a dirt road from San Juan De Los Planes to San Antonio. That road has been paved for about three years now.
This last February we also drove the dirt road from Boca Del Alamo all the way to San Jose Del Cabo. It was a worthwhile drive, but the ocean views I expected were blocked because the road was mostly behind some hill sides blocking the view.
Cabo Pulmo was beautiful, and I can see why it is such a great diving destination, but that is the most water you'll see when driving that road. There were a few other "open" views, but most of the land was fenced off between the road and the water. The very few open viewing spots were turtle sanctuaries, therefore one had to be careful where one went.

special note, if going to Muertos bay, if you want to go past the guarded gate just tell them you are going in for breakfast or lunch and the gate will be opened for you. Both are very reasonably priced... You do need reservations for dinner and $$$$$$.

Also if you just keep going straight there is a really really nice view restaurant, and if you are a person who likes snorkeling, walk past it around the bend and go 100 yards past the bend right there.

The other intimidating one is over at Punta Arena near Muertos. They have a two stage guard system. Just tell them you are going fishing or snorkeling. In front of the old hotel is also a great snorkeling place.

Now ya know a local just ask.

willardguy - 6-7-2013 at 08:22 PM

who remembers that long taxi ride from the hotel los arcos out to las arenas? :O
