First time Sting Ray tag

Santiago - 4-5-2013 at 03:56 PM

Got nailed by a sting ray in a rocky area.
(Note to Jeans: the beech was rocky, got tagged in my heel)
Couldn't do the shuffle and the damn thing looked just like the rocks.

Anyway, first thing I did was wash it in alcohol and then the standard procedure of soaking in very hot water worked and the pain was gone within a couple of hours. Kept it covered with sulfa lotion, a band-aid, white gym socks and Tevas for a few days.
Given the way most of the denizens of Camp Gecko dress I don't think I was too out of line.
Did not do the pee thing as I couldn't figure out how to stand and there was no point in asking anyone else in camp as I had already washed it in alcohol.

pee on a jelly fish sting. i guess peeing into an open wound MIGHT work, but it's prolly good you refrained...

HOT soak x 30 min is the treatment of choice AND clean the wound, removing any sheath remnants

Sorry to hear about that...glad you're feeling better.

On the mainland I saw a youth limp out of the surf, he was bleeding like a stuck hog. Ankle. The locals went out looking for yerba de mantaraya. Steeped it in 40C water. That was one tough Oregonian kid. He was back in the water on his boogie board the next morning.

A Camp Gecko dress code, I shudder to think of the possibilities. You did say "white gym socks". If your choice had been the black socks with Tevas, I might have had to change my opinion of you.

I'm glad you're ok.

We missed getting down to Bahia this spring. If you're still down there, please wish Ponsonia a happy belated birthday from me.

As always,

I agree with Woody, Pee or actually the ammonia in Pee, is good for jelly fish stings, I doubt it does much good on stingray puncture wounds. I have also heard (but not tried) that meat tenderizer will help breakdown the enzymes in a stingray puncture wound if you get it applied right away.

Pansonia had a great birthday, lasted about 3 days, he just wishes he could remember it.

Santiago,

This is the only stingray you wanna be dealing with.
