Man O' War cove at Mag Bay?

neilm81301 - 4-6-2013 at 09:34 AM

I was listening to a story about this place last night; I 'd like to learn more - I guess it's a small fishing village, boat in only, they put on a great feast for visitors.

He was a little sparse on the exact location. Is anyone familiar with this place? Is there a map? Not much on BN forums; some refs by cruisers on the net, not precise..

Thanks,

Neil

As you enter Mag Bay, Punta Entrada is the left side point. If you go left inside the bay, you'll shortly come to Man of War cove. It was just a seasonal fish camp - may have grown. Further in by about 5 miles is Puerto Magdalena, a larger village - which I understand has grown since I was there a few years ago. Finally, up a long zigzag channel is Puerto San Carlos, which had a Port Captain and Aduana. It was a shrimp and grain port then.
Everything going out to Man of War or Puerto Magdalena has to come the long way around the north end of the Bay via Lopez Mateos, and down along Bahia Santa Maria.
Pretty remote areas!
Interesting area to visit by boat, along with Bahia Santa Maria, just outside Mag Bay and north.
There are fishing and surfcamps along the outside of Santa Maria. Go to the web site for Mag Bay Sportfishing.
Good exploring!

I've run by it countless times on the way up and down the estero between between Lopez Mateos and the Entrada to San Carlos, but have never stopped in, anchoring for the night instead at Punta Belcher which is closer to the Entrada and the fishing outside. It is approx. ten miles by boat from San Carlos. Or, you can cross the estero at Lopez and motor down via Mag Bay Outfitters' "ferry" and trucks or ATVs. If you are planning to visit and don't have a boat, I'm sure that Steve Warren of Mag Bay Tours in San Carlos or Bob Hoyt with Mag Bay Outfitters can make it happen.

Below is a pic of a couple of coyotes fishing along the estero shore near Man 'O War cove one day last year as I was passing by.
