Sounds like you are talking about a "panorex" x-ray. It goes around the outside of the head. It can be digital or film...I have taken thousand of
them over my 30 year dental career. Here is a link of a panorex.

Right. It's not about "digital" - most dentists have digital X-ray now - but a panoramic shot. Can be digital or film, and I would try and avoid
offices where they still do it on film. Digital picture is better, easier to work with.
