Looking forward to sharing all of this with some local friends.
Thanks

Nice to see that today the ficus trees in the park in the center of town are thriving and are now so much larger than in this photo. Really gives you a sense of time passing to look at the changes in the trees.

Especially since, On the other hand, the mission hasn't changed very much at all in Hundreds of years.

Great find. Anyone know when the Ficus trees were planted?

Don't know how long ago they were planted but here's how they looked around Christmas of 2012:

Hi Susanna,

San Telmo (San Telmo de Arriba) is on the now paved road from Highway One up to the observatories. The San Telmo/ Observatory side road is about 85 miles south of Ensenada and the village of San Telmo (de Arriba) is about 5 miles east. The settlement on Hwy. 1 at the turnoff is sometimes known as San Telmo (de Abajo), so that is why the extra name ('upper' San Telmo).

The site of San Telmo began as a visita (visiting station) of the Spanish California Mission of Santo Domingo, in 1798. In 1769, Junipero Serra camped two days at San Telmo during has walk from Loreto north to establish missions in San Diego and Carmel, Alta California.

Here is a map that shows the region and Observatory road, with 3 zoom levels to show you San Telmo:

Well, some of the captions are wrong... some of the photos are reversed... so I am looking at them with interest. The Mission San Fernando de Velicatá one is interesting (mislabled in the index as San Ignacio)...

Here is my photo taken in April, 1974:

One year later, in 1975:

Thanks for the info, McFez, I love seeing old photos of places I've known so I'll enjoy browsing through the link.

One Jesuit historian I came across in doing research bitterly complained that there was way more stuff recorded/written about Baja California than such an uninviting place with such little going for it deserved. The photo record will likely fall in this category, too, as our countrymen long ago adopted the peninsula as their playground and adventure land, documenting their trips as they went and continue to go. I fall in this category, too.

susanna - 4-23-2013 at 05:24 PM

Thank you David for the info about San Telmo.

susanna - 4-23-2013 at 05:34 PM

Same uncle farmed in Testeraso in the early 90's growing zuchinni until he was killed in a car crash on Mex 3. We use to visit him in Testeraso back when he living there, i remember we visited him over a weekend and there was a party in the village and the music went on all night i couldn't believe it.

David K - 4-23-2013 at 05:39 PM

My pleasure!

Baja Bucko's grandfather (as I recall) lived or was born in San Telmo... For such a tiny place, it may have a lot of Nomad connections?

BajaRat - 4-23-2013 at 08:07 PM

Fantastic Mcfez, Hours n hours of fun. :bounce:
