Was making a trip from La Paz to Austin Texas and while going through Mexicali we got lost. Imagine that!!! Lost!!!! Then was pulled over for speeding!!!! That has never happened to anyone else!!!! Told the officer that I was looking for the border crossing and he pulled out his cell phone and made a call. Here comes the paddy wagon!!!!! The person on the other end, in English, explained what we needed to do to get to the east crossing. The officer took his phone and while putting it in his pocket said "follow me". He took us right to the east gate and made sure we were "not lost any more!!!!! What a great guy!!!!! Don't hear this side of the story very often, but it was nice!!!!! The rest of the trip was just long.....4400 mile round trip!!! But the visit was great!

Most here at the BN really feels that the police in Baja are great folks. Excellent story.....thanks for that.

Really? That's a joke right? Maybe it's the ICE LE that get's all the slamming.

I've read maybe one or two positive stories about MX cops here. The rest has always been how corrupt they are and the horror stories about getting scammed have been numerous.

My impression has always been that BN is an anti-cop, anti-law crowd. No respect for MX law.

Ok, lets change Lee's opinion of us on BN and pile on:

Making our way out of Merida, the periferico running around the city can get confusing and we ended up back in the city frustrated...saw two motorcycle cops on the side of the road and asked for directions onward. One of the cops gave a hand signal to follow him and we did. Out of the city around the periferico to our exit where he pulled over and waved the direction we were to follow. I got out of our van and with a five dollar bill folded in my palm, shook his hand and emptied mine with a thanks and enjoy a beer tonight on me!

Saw two cops in a squad car pulled over on a stretch of road to Escarcega from Palenque. One held a machine gun and the other looked disconcerted as if they were'nt happy to be where they were. Pulled over and inquired as to if they needed anything and they said they were out of gas. Took my 5 gallon off the van and emptied it into their car, gave them some cold water bottles and thanked them for their service. Paid back good dead given from day before!

OK Yucatan cops are good people.

It's the devil-may-care, rakish BN in Baja I speak to.

How is Merida? Always wanted to go there.

You're right as usual, Lee, but it's only fair to say, we may not have the time, nor the inclination, to drop what we're doing and write a commendation for every tradesman, professional or public servant when he/she does exactly what he's supposed to be doing.
It's the anomoly that gets our attention and the prudent thing to do is warn your friends of the danger at hand.

Like any profession, a few bad apples make the whole barrel look bad. I once had a Rosarito cop spend 4 hours helping me reattach the axle on my boat trailer then lead me to a llantera to replace the tire.

Perhaps Lee should experience the holidays over here at San Felipe. Around Easter time.....the town is overloaded with cops. Hell...there are cops on every corner......every sidewalk. Cops cops cops!

100% polite. Talkative with the tourist. Some of them even flash a smile (OMFG!). They are not nice however to the obnoxious drunks..... the speeders......the disrespecting mutt.

Lee.....you should get of of your locked car once in a while and enjoy what the true Baja has to offer. I have yet heard one single complaint about the cops in Baja from all of my friends and neighbors down there.

"It is uh, unusual, to uh, see, uh..."

"gringos"

"Si, gringos in this part of town"

"I pulled off the cuota to find a restaurant and got very lost"

"You would like to go back to the autopista (cuota)?"

"Si! Mucho!"

"Follow me amigo"

As I pulled onto the on-ramp I waved and his blipped his siren and gave me a thumbs up.

Well, Easter in any Baja town won't happen for me. Enjoy yourselves in San Felipe. I'll never get there either. I'm aware of everything Baja has to offer and it's limitations.

I think we all share the beauty and splendor of the Peninsula.

If I'm the only one reading about cops acting badly, then I'm hallucinating. That happens.

It might be the generally negative attitude I'm reading about the ICE crowd. Patriotic men and women manning our Borders. God Bless Them!

The old type of "Mexicali Police Officer" has changed with better training, more professionalism with everyone not just the American Tourist. Too many eyes watching for the policeman taking "The Bite" and too many policemen have found they are no longer policemen for letting their teeth sink in for "The Bite."

I go to Mexicali a lot for my doctor, dentist, medicine, eating and sporting events so sometimes crossing 3 or more times a week. I drive the posted speed in town and stop for those crossing the street not matter how "SLOW" they do it, LOL. I stop at all "STOP SIGNS" no matter how well they are hidden and think I am the only one in Mexico doing this as everyone else zooms by me as I STOP!! I have not had "THE BITE" put on me in Mexicali since early 1990s and in T.J. not since early 2000. So, things are changing with policemen wanting to keep the regular pay check verses the chance of no pay check and charges too!! Hope this keeps changing for the better and love "The TOURIST POLICE" that keep other law enforcement types from doing "THE BITE!!"
