Peso Exchange

pete6 - 4-27-2013 at 11:19 PM

Headed to Los Barriles May 2-14
Want to exchange some cash before I cross the border…
Does anyone have a good place to go?

chuckie - 4-28-2013 at 01:57 AM

atm

Bob and Susan - 4-28-2013 at 05:11 AM

nope...last turn off before the crossing...

at the insurance place...

just turn right at the stop then 200 feet...
lots of parking...
its a free-standing building across the street from the big parking place

good rate and insurance if you need it

second place would be Ensenada...the shopping center just before the hospital if you drive by the waterfront

If you need to stop at Costco, the one on broadway in Chula Vista would be most convenient for you. They have a cambio inside the store. One stop shopping with a pretty good exchange rate for pesos.......then celebrate with a couple of their kick-ass hot dogs.
I'll bet you had no idea life could be this good. :tumble:
SALUD

atm kiosk right past the san miguel toll plaza. next to the tienda. as an added bonus the federal police are usually parked in the middle of the street!

David K - 4-28-2013 at 11:31 AM

Costco in Chula Vista as Dennis said. What if you wait to use the ATM in Mexico and your card fails?

pete6 - 4-28-2013 at 11:35 AM

Thanks for the info guys!!!

David K - 4-28-2013 at 11:39 AM

Should you not get pesos for any reason, dollars are accepted in Baja no problem.

Sure...in a pinch, but even some small businesses see them as an added problem when they have to spend them. The days of the coveted, almighty dollar are history and something will be lost on the exchange for everybody using them.
Try to avoid using dollars in a gas station. It will probably ruin your day.

Yep, and clean bathrooms next to the tienda.

Relative to other cambios, they used to be pretty good.
I don't know. I'm done with cambios anyway.

I believe you can spend pesos at that Costco as well. Should be able to since there are usually enough Mexicans shopping there to form the 34th state.

Does San Miguel own those places?

It's a price for convenience. If I need to exchange a large amount of money, I use Costco...yes I lose money but it's easy. But I think the spread was about half a peso....ni modo, right?! Unfortunately, we don't have an ATM in Asuncion so I don't have the option of going multiple times during our vacations.

As for the bathroom question, I think the bathrooms are operated by the government/toll road. I've used the ones at the northernmost (old) toll booth as well.

I think the ATM is a Scotia bank and Santader....:?:

BajaNomad - 4-28-2013 at 03:12 PM

It's been my understanding that while Costco in Chula Vista does not have the best rates, many people have felt it safer to conduct their transaction there.

For the best rates at the border, it's been my experience that there is a group of cambios along San Ysidro Blvd that are consistently very competitive (and perhaps the most competitive) - and because of this, they are quite busy - often having to stand in line for service.

These locations are all grouped together on the south side of San Ysidro Blvd just east of Interstate 805. 5 places, all "no comision". Two Baja-Mex locations, a place called Intercam, Money Center, and at the corner of SY Blvd & Louisiana is Express.

They are here:
http://goo.gl/maps/N0v5Y

The below pic shows one of the Baja-Mex locations in the middle, with another Baja-Mex location barely seen on the right (you can see the lights on the sign), Money Center (in red and yellow) left of Baja-Mex, and Express just beyond Money Center.

OH... btw... having said all this - it has ALSO been my experience that when the actual exchange at the border is just below a certain # - like recently (example: 11.95 pesos per dollar) - that you're often better off just spending US dollars in Baja, as so many places will still be offering 12-to-1 as their effective exchange rate at their place of business.

Ahhhsooo...you're talking about the Toll Plaza. I thought you meant across the bridge by the store.

woody with a view - 4-28-2013 at 03:47 PM

no, right there at the booths, not at the store by the offramp into san miguel.

Over the years, I bet I've recycled around fifty gallons of Toll Road Cerveza in that facility. It's exactly two cold ones south of Salsipuedes....another scheduled relief point.

A prudent international traveler ALWAYS has backups in his wallet.
IE: more than one ATM card.

The key is to make SURE your USA bank knows you will be in Mexico using your ATM card to withdraw cash. But you already know this.

However, if one is a 2 week millionaire on a fishing trip.....just take the USD "C" notes and forget about a MX ATM machine and take the exchange hit with every purchase.

Talk about a good way to save money. Breaking a hundred is next to impossible here unless one has a local bank account. Even then......
