Peso Exchange

If you need to stop at Costco, the one on broadway in Chula Vista would be most convenient for you. They have a cambio inside the store. One stop shopping with a pretty good exchange rate for pesos.......then celebrate with a couple of their kick-ass hot dogs.
I'll bet you had no idea life could be this good.

It's a price for convenience. If I need to exchange a large amount of money, I use Costco...yes I lose money but it's easy. But I think the spread was about half a peso....ni modo, right?! Unfortunately, we don't have an ATM in Asuncion so I don't have the option of going multiple times during our vacations.

As for the bathroom question, I think the bathrooms are operated by the government/toll road. I've used the ones at the northernmost (old) toll booth as well.

I think the ATM is a Scotia bank and Santader....

It's been my understanding that while Costco in Chula Vista does not have the best rates, many people have felt it safer to conduct their transaction there.

For the best rates at the border, it's been my experience that there is a group of cambios along San Ysidro Blvd that are consistently very competitive (and perhaps the most competitive) - and because of this, they are quite busy - often having to stand in line for service.

These locations are all grouped together on the south side of San Ysidro Blvd just east of Interstate 805. 5 places, all "no comision". Two Baja-Mex locations, a place called Intercam, Money Center, and at the corner of SY Blvd & Louisiana is Express.

The below pic shows one of the Baja-Mex locations in the middle, with another Baja-Mex location barely seen on the right (you can see the lights on the sign), Money Center (in red and yellow) left of Baja-Mex, and Express just beyond Money Center.

OH... btw... having said all this - it has ALSO been my experience that when the actual exchange at the border is just below a certain # - like recently (example: 11.95 pesos per dollar) - that you're often better off just spending US dollars in Baja, as so many places will still be offering 12-to-1 as their effective exchange rate at their place of business.

Talk about a good way to save money. Breaking a hundred is next to impossible here unless one has a local bank account. Even then......
