Shipping containers

AAS - 4-29-2013 at 09:14 AM

I am in Todos Santos and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience getting a shipping container delivered here. Does anyone know where to start asking? I know there are tons in Baja Norte. Is there a source for them in La Paz or maybe Santa Rosalia? Thanks.

Last year I tried very hard to find one in Baja, with no luck. I did get a quote for purchase and delivery from San Diego to San Ignacio, but it wasn't economically feasible. Contact Monica at http://www.monicapagelogistics.com/Home_Page.html she knows Baja very well, and was very helpful and responsive, just outside of my budget. Good luck and let us know what you find.

You are too kind :) I'll check it out. There was another thread from last year but no updates on whether the poster ever located one.

If that was my thread about shipping containers, the answer is no.

Bajaguy, we've had a few people check in at that place and none can come up with the same answer. We even have Alex Pabloff working on it. We are about ready to give up and build.

Wonder if they can be had on the mainland then shipped empty across the Cortez???

I know nothing about this but I'd guess a shipping container would be expensive and paying the gas and wages to have it trucked down south would be a lot. Good luck. I hope to learn from this and other threads! A great storage device these containers are!

Yep. One of my customers in National City uses them as offices, stacked on top of each other. Two stories high.

I looked into shipping containers last year; was going to use it as a storage/garage in San Lucas Cove. On my drive down, I stopped at the port in Ensenada to see how much they wanted for one; I had cash in hand and was ready to buy it and have it delivered. That was until they quoted me the price. I forget the exact dollar amount.. but it was around $6,400.... and that was excluding the delivery charge. I said "no way Jose", and kept driving. I settled on building a cinder block garage instead.

My neighbor had two delivered to Pescadero last year, they weren't cheap, I believe he told me they cost him about 5k-6k each with the transportation.

There is a 2 story, now out of business, restaurant in Maeadero that's made from those containers, It's just as you turn onto the road to La Bufadora. and they were only open for about 2 months before closing. I'd bet you could get those containers cheap.

Found my quote from Dec 2012. Purchase price of a 20' container in San Diego was about $2500, and transportation costs (including forwarding fees, freight service, freight insurance, and customs fees) was another $2400. I decided it wasn't economically feasible for me. On a positive note though, you could fill the container up with your personal items if you are moving to Baja, and then it might make more sense (I was looking for an empty container).

Ouch. $2400 delivery, etc fees. I understand why you passed. I'll continue my quest and let you know if I find anything. Thanks!

If you want to see some sea container dwellings, visit http://www.hybridarc.com/ . They also off a service of providing working blueprints for container homes for a reasonable price.
