Fantastic, before there were Trophy Trucks, there was Walker Evans... Walker was the overall Baja 1000 winner in a pickup truck (Class 8) one year, and had won Class 8 many times!

I did two gas pits for Justin Morgan bike 403. He was 1st overall bike and 2nd over all vehicle in the race. Riding a Honda CRF450 he averaged 66.1mph. When I gassed him at hwy 1 out of Coco's he had no tread on the rear tire. At the BOLA, El Arco, San Francisquito jct he took over 3 gallons of gas after 70 miles, that's 2 stroke type consumption. You know he was WFO all the way. One biker ran off the cliff coming up the hills before the junction. A race truck turned over in the same area and on my way out before El Arco a buggie went end over end landing upside down. They said they were OK and a chase crew was coming in for them.

Depends on your point of view, I guess...Good mix as far as i was concerned....I think I'll resurrect my 5-16car and do it next year...I am 78...

I believe that was 1978 when he overalled the 1000. I was at Punta CONEJO that year pitting for the Husqvarna moto team and was surprised when the first racer over the hill was a 4 wheeler.

I ran into Walker and his prerun crew at Rice & Beans in San Ignacio last month. When I mentioned that overall win he sat right up and said yep, that was in 1978.

We race a KTM quad in baja norte and Sur so racing is not new to us...We were very enthused when NORRA first came out with their vintage rally and we spent a lot of time helping people. It was supposed to be a race anyone could afford (by keeping it vintage and simple). I hope that does not change.

Also while I am here. Congrats to Paul Clark. Even with problems on day 2 he finished well.

No quads entered. what you saw was a UTV (side x side) and it did not finish

Thanks, we had a great time and shared the driving between myself, my daughter and her husband and his brother, making it a family event. We lost Day 2 due to tire and brake problems but managed to get repaired and finished 2nd in class and 14th overall. Thanks to all the people who helped us along the way.
The event is split between vintage and modern cars and there were some great cars and competition out there. My hat goes off to the 911 Porsche from Georgia, which was almost stock, had no support and kept on coming to the end----missing a few special stages.

A Targa. Almost identical to mine (same vintage, color, etc except I have a 911E). I did not get a close enough look at it to find ut how he ever got it high enough to get tire/ground clearance etc.

1975-1978 The 1000 stayed in Baja Norte doing loops courses of 650-850 miles, usually starting and ending in Ensenada. I ran a pit at the '78 1000, at Borrego Wash. That race was the first to run down Arroyo Matomi (furthest point south).

It was actually the 1979 1000, and that was the first year SCORE ran it to La Paz, that Walker won overall (four wheeled vehicles):
