A strong issue is HOW you want to spend your non-whale time when in the area? If you like stores tourist restaurants and a larger choice of hotels
then indeed my opinion leans toward Guerrero Negro.
Opinion varies but I found Ojo de Liebre to be a bit on the finicky side as far as comfort. Windy and chilly. The water can get bumpy toward the end
of the trip.
Been a lot of chatter about "The Best Whale Watching" and that's when Laguna San Ignacio enters the picture. The town of San Ignacio is the closest
for hotels with electricity and restaurants. The town is much more attractive than Guerrero Negro and an attraction in its own right. But be aware,
the laguna is not close to town and calling the brecha "washbpoard" is being overly kind.
Like the rest of México, there is no clear "best" all things considered.
I found Magdalena Bay to have more Humpback whales than Gray whales when I was there and it is one huge body of water. We damned near got swamped at
3PM with three foot chop and swells.

Gray Whales watching season oficially ended April 30th.

Guerrero Negro is pretty much a pit in my opinion. good whale watching, though. nada else, hotels are marginal, food okay, but...
I've no experience with San Ignacio but would opt for that over GN.
I'd recommend heading further south, basing yourself in Loreto, which has a wide range of hotel/restaurant/outdoor activity choices. Lopez Mateo
makes an easy day trip for whale watching and you've also got the chance to see whales (and dolphins, etc) in the Sea of Cortez during your stay in
Loreto.

my opinion:
you won't be able to tell one whale from another so go for the easiest location the first time. from the US that would be G Negro. Shari's tours are a
fun and action packed good time! Shari will take care of all the details, all you gotta do is show up, eat a great dinner, sleep and go see the whales
the next morning.

GN and SI both have good whales. but the non-whale experiences are night/day different. GN is gritty industrial town, SI lagoon is pristine desert,
and desert is much more interesting at SI. Also, SI village is great, great town to spend a day or 3.
hands down, SI is best spot.
of course, different strokes for differnt folks,...
if you drive to SI, suggest you stay at Kuyima (tent camping or casitas)
Watch Whales

When I go on a whale watching trip, I go to watch whales.....I don't go for the night life, I don't go to sleep in tents (Yurts).....I did plenty of
that in the Army. I also don't do "cattle car" tours. I also don't want to drive the extra time from GN to SI.....and I really don't want to drive the
road from SI to the lagoon.
There are several good places to eat and stay in GN, and we appreciate the educational aspect of Shari's trips. In GN you can also tour the salt works

Thank you everyone for all your input. We will be traveling baja all the way to Cabo and will be stopping basically wherever we want. The whale watch

My vote would be for San Ignacio Lagoon, but I am biased. That is where I like to go to see the grays.
Just to put this out there for anyone who has not been to the lagoon recently... They are paving the road to the lagoon, though they have not yet
completed the project. The first 25 (of 36) miles has been completed and word is that it will be finished by the 2014 whale watching season. That
makes the "getting there" a lot easier for those who are worried about the drive.
