San Javier and the road going West?

I've been on google maps looking for side trips. I was following the road to San Javier from Loreto. I noticed that the road keeps on going west, right through the town. Has anyone been down that road?

A few Nomads have posted trip reports on the road from San Javier to Santo Domingo/Ciudad Insurgentes as well as the other road that goes to San Jose Comondu and San Miguel Comondu.

So that folks can visualize these roads... note San Javier in the center of this first map...

Yes, I run that road all the time....it's great and beautiful behind the mission.

And the stretch from Comondu to San Javier is not too rough? Wasn't clear to me. Driving small 4WD pickup. I'm hoping to come in from the south from Villa/Poza Grande and then out into Loreto. Meet you in the middle Frank. Thanks for info. Tio Just looked at the links from Wilderone & Mike's trip in January. Photos from Motocycle trips were most helpful as I may travel alone. The road west out of San Javier is used in the Baja 1000 races to La Paz and Cabo. It was used last November so the markings should still be up in case you need them but normally it's the road most traveled. It comes out to hwy53 at KM26. It's 43 miles from mission to hwy53.

Thanks everyone, thats exactly what I was looking for. I can visit San Javier, not have to back track and drive part of 1000 race course. Doesn't get any better then that!

True, but don't be in a hurry... the road from Loreto to San Javier is nearly all paved... and while longer to go to Constitucion or La Paz... it might be faster than the long dirt road to Santo Domingo. If you are like me, you will do the dirt and enjoy a taste of old Baja!

Yes, we will be doing the dirt road. I'm finally slowing down to see more of this beautiful land. Before it was all about the fishing for me, now the side trips are icing on the tres leche! I'll be watching for the mission site at 11 miles.

I'll try to keep it below Udo speed. :biggrin:

Great... it is just a pile of rocks to most, but a large pila (reservoir) is still there carved out of rocks... It is off the graded road, on the older road, use Google Earth to spot it before your trip.
