Where do you fish when your not down south?

 Pages:  1

baitcast - 5-20-2013 at 12:12 PM

I know you don,t stop so just where do you fish, rivers, lakes the northern salt,I found the striper fishing not as advertised I,m about 10 years late maybe more but I,m learning how to give the smallmouth hell, they and big bows are my sweetwater favorites.

Fially got out the other day thought I would share the outing with you.

Got there at first light and started throwing the Spook on one of my favorite coves on the AZ. side, its been awhile since I worked a Spook and missed two straight half-hearted blow ups in the first hour then nothing for the next hour.

I suffer from tunnel vision when I,m throwing my favorite lures and stay with them for to long when I should be trying something else such it is with Kastmasters and Spooks in freshwater,if they don,t work I figure its time to go home

Not this day been using the original spook to start with no luck opened the tackle for one last look and spotted a Spook puppy a sexy little 3" frog which worked great up north on smallmouth and crappie, what the hell why not give it short try before I leave and I'll try that little shallow rocky pointe.

The Pup is to light for the baitcaster so I rigged it on a light spinner with 4# used it that way before why not today, first damn cast and just getting used to the change when a good smallie made an aerial attack and I nearly dropped my rod whoa!! one more cast and again an explosion missed him! what the hell settle down boy finally hooked one, what fun these fish are,big native Bows and Smallmouth my two favorites in freshwater, ened up getting four and lost count of the misses, all were 2 or 2 1/2 and I nearly went home, the Lake Mohave Smallies are alive and well.........The end
Rob
This took place at Lake Mohave, just where do you fish when your not down south?

Ok, this may sound weird, but I fish in my dreams.

In the carpet.

The fish are swimming in the carpet and I can cast right to them and watch them take my lure.

Sometimes I'll be sitting on the couch when a fish will come swimming out from underneath. I'll grab my rod and drop a bait down between the couch and the coffee table and FISH ON.

Reel, reel, reel, reel!

This is not a one time dream. I have carpet fishing dreams often.

This past winter we were in Bahia and the halibut were right on the shore. It was dajavu all over again, just like in my dreams, it was there, I could see it and BAM, it would take my lure.

I need to fish.

Wow. My dream was remarkably similar. I had it when I was about 16 on Socal.

I dreamed that it had rained heavily and there we puddles on the lawn in our back yard. It walked out on the grass and started casting and out of the grass came big fat crappies. It was miraculous how they just appeared out of the grass like that.

skeet...i love all those places you mention too...problem is, puget sound hasn't had a true cod for around 25 years now...they were completely wiped out near the end of the 20th century, sadly...the commercial boys took their toll, not saying we didn't catch our share also....

truly, the truecod is one of the finest eating fish on the planet....and that's why they are gone bigtime...i live on the straits of juan de fuca, right here on the entrance to puget sound...i have been involved in fisheries enforcement almost all my adult life...i also fish this wonderful fish stew almost daily...and i'm sorry to say skeet, but the true cod is NOT coming back...at least so far...no documented catches in many many years here recreationally...it is very sad but true.

I think it's the submarine canyon that's just offshore. It pumps out a lot of nutrients from far below. When I was going to school there I once saw a school of anchovies from the beach to the end of the pier. The only other place I've seen it like that is at Cabo Pulmo every March. The sardinas arrive there from the south and hold for a month before moving north. Don't know if that is still going on.

Its got to be the bait and the deep water canyon, that brings them in. We only will take 1 Thresher every other year, no matter how bad it kicks our butt  We finally figured out how to mouth hook them with live bait and circle hooks. Someday we may actually calm down enough to film one underwater chasing the greenback.

After all these years fishing, I still can't sleep the night before a trip even if we are chasing calicos in kelp with the 14' Klamath.

Dreams? I sat up straight one night during Tuna season, yelling " there they are! " My wife sits up and says what's wrong? I whacked right across the chest pointing to the boiling fish, still yelling, then fell back to sleep.

She just ducks now when the fish are in.

baitcast - 5-23-2013 at 08:50 AM

 Hilarious Sleeping has always been a problem with me also altho I never beat on the wife.

T-Sharks and Mako,s are two of my favorites used to fish them often in a 16' Ryan off OC.Calif. and speaking of sharks check out this vid of a Mako gone crazy!!

Frank - 5-23-2013 at 09:34 AM

Best video of a guy that was totally caught up in the moment! He had me yelling at the monitor.

I may have to get the 12wt out and give that a try this year.

baitcast - 5-23-2013 at 09:50 AM

Those two sharks are a kick in the ass to catch as well as eat we would take a small one now and then, the pic is me and my old 16" Ryan, not much freeboard which meant when a bigger grinner was along side the hair on the back of my neck would stand on end,the bigger ones were very scary:o

Had a T-Shark whack me up side the head with his tail one time, saw stars for a hour,my first Mako.

Notice along side of its head a bigger one took a nip while I had it along side:o

Where were those WSB taken,Beautiful fish!! can,t be to much of a wasteland, its great to see such a come back,I got some nice ones on the old Belmont pier in the early sixties but in those days there were sardines everywhere,b-tchen fishin!!
Rob

Skipjack Joe - 5-23-2013 at 09:52 PM

There was a time when you could have sworn that the WSB days at socal would never be again. But the management practices DFG put in really turned things around. WSB off Belmont pier? That must've been something.

Even halibut had become really rare at one time. I remember my first trip ever on a half day boat (about 62). We made a drift over Huntington Flats and every one of us got a halibut on one drift. There must've been 30-40 anglers on board. Everyone went home with limits of halibut. Then things started to get worse but the Seal Beach pier was still a good bet for a large flattie. By the mid 70's they were pretty rare. They've bounced back since then but the WSB turnaround is just amazing really.

Kgryfon - 5-24-2013 at 10:11 PM

When NOB I fish the California Delta and SF Bay. I keep my boat berthed halfway between so I can go either way. We catch striped bass, sturgeon, tiger shark, an occasional ray, and pesky crabs inside the Golden Gate (can't keep them if they are inside the GG. They eat all your bait and tease!). Catfish back in the Delta, too, but I don't keep those. Salmon can be found here, too, but I've never caught one myself.

I've fished everywhere I've ever lived and I try to make it a point to get in at least one fishing trip everywhere I go on vacation.

Frank - 5-25-2013 at 07:05 AM

I'll show you an area that fewer than 100 people see a year. Above Copco Lake, where there are no salmon or steelhead runs. 20 miles of the worst dirt road you have ever experienced. It's very primitive in there. There are no tables and no firepits. Unlike the sierras the water is rich in minerals and loaded with bugs. The trout are fat and sassy.

I well take you back to 1946 0r 47,my father bought a stump ranch on Pend Oreille lake Ida,we had fished the lake off and on since I was a kid while living in Spokane Wa.

Hows this for a bargain,180 acres,2100' of shore line, old farm house, big barn, two horses, two cows,80 acres cleared the rest in timber and a lake while at the time had two world records trout,37#Rainbow and a 32# Dolly Varden for a total out the door of $ 18,000:lol: forgot it had huge Mackinaw also up to 40#:o Thats what they called Lake Trout up there.

The first year Dad towed a big tree up to our beach after the the spring run off, secured it and made our fishing pier ,where as a young kid I caught Bows,Cutthroat and Dollies, perch,my first Bass,it was heaven on earth for a fisherman, before we moved three years later our best fish were a Rainbow or Kamloop that Dad caught 12#,nearly 8# Dolly for me and Moms 9# Bowand I was just getting started with my fishing career:lol:

He said son if it ain,t a trout its not worth your time:lol:

Whistler, Baitcast, Frank...yes, I meant leopard shark, not tiger shark. Good eating but a pain to get that tough skin off. I love the Delta! I'm moving my boat this month further into the Delta; I've been on the Bay side for a few years now and want a change of scenery. Plus, if this water issue goes the wrong way it could spell the end of the Delta and I want to get back there before that happens. Used to be more in the Delta by Bethel Island but moved towards the Bay about 5 years ago. BTW, I'm a woman, not a guy. This happens a lot. Maybe I should post a pic

Whistler, I used to go gold panning on the N. fork of the American River. Spent many a day camping up there and had a blast! Hike upriver, pan all day, and ride a inner tube all the way back down to camp. Make fresh-picked blackberry pancakes and bacon in the morning. Make the kids tote water up from the river (no facilities - remote camping) when they got "bored." I never saw any decent fish there, though. I was told it was from all the panning going on. Some people used vacuums and scooped up all the rocks, etc, from the bottom of the river; I guess it disturbed the eggs. This was up by Colfax, and Sunnyvale is quite a bit further south so the fishing must have not been impacted down there. This was all before I got bit by the boating bug. Haven't been back in many years but have many fond memories from when my kids were small.

Very nice picture, and heck of a nice fish you have there!!

Very true. Each has it's own special properties. There is no 'best' in these matters.

Have you ever walked the dewey grass banks of a BC lake in the early morning and watched the mist over the water?

Have you ever waded the shallows of Henry's Fork and seen the gentle dimples of trout on it's flat surface?

Have you ever stood on the granite boulder of a sierra stream and looked upward along the cliffs, to the green skyline, and seen those white clouds pass overhead?

Have you ever been at Tuolumne Meadows and felt as though you could reach those clouds just above you?

Have you ever sat in a float tube on a bass pond and looked across the water and seen the cottonwoods all lit up with gold from the setting sun?

Those are the visions of a fishermen.

Fly fish 6 months within 150 mile radius of Bozeman. Spend one week off OR/WA coast chasing salmon and albacore. Rest of the time in Baja.

Catalina Offshore Products!

AKgringo - 2-9-2015 at 09:48 AM

Kenai River in South central AK, or from a Zodiac off the beaches south of Deep Creek on the Kenai Peninsula. Huge tides! As much as +22'. -4', you don't drive on those beaches without checking the tide tables.
Fishing out of Seward and Whittier is also productive and spectacular scenery.

Mostly offshore tuna fishing off So Cal when not in Baja. Have also done some Halibut fishing out of Sitka, AK. Not much of a fresh water fishing guy.

Cape Cod Bay between Plymouth and Provincetown. Some tasty striped bass and bluefish to be had.

I like to pursue grayling in Alaska's interior.

That's the second time I've done that. He's obviously following in his dad's footprints.

I'm so proud that we went to this place Ken. The road goes up to that mining operation you see in the background. The snowmelt was so high that the river was flowing both down the river and the road further upstream. The road looked like the river itself. We drove up to it and realized we couldn't drive further.

I got out of the suv to see how deep it was and whether there were high spots in the road where we continue driving. Anyway, I spot what I think is a rise in the river. So Alex assembles his rod and presto he lands a grayling from the submerged road. And it was a good 200-300 feet from the river. What a surprise.

Eventually I drove that suv right into that water for about 1/2 mile before it rose out onto dry land and continued our journey. We found caribou up in those hills.

 So funny,I like your kitchen, nothing like traveling light, those guys remind me of whitefish with a big dorsal.....didn't know they were good eating thx.
Rob
PS We fished where they were supposed to be be but never got one:?:

Skipjack Joe - 2-11-2015 at 10:23 AM

I'm pretty sure they are related to whitefish. They are a beginner's fish. Fly is dragging - no problem. They'll hit it anyway.
