High speed reel that casts well!

woody with a view - 5-20-2013 at 05:31 PM

i'm looking for a reel that will cast a jig a mile and still cranks back 6 to 1 or better. something along the lines of a Trinidad gold 16 or similar. anyone have some good alternatives, and more important, want to sell one?

acadist - 5-20-2013 at 05:38 PM

Avet have anything? And, NO, you can't have mine!

Frank - 5-20-2013 at 05:45 PM

If you don't want to spend the coin for the Trini 16, you might look at the Torium. Avets are great too, we have the SX and love them.

I also like the Curado 300EJ for tossing light surface iron. I have a video of me burning up drags in the Curado, if your interested.

Accurate FURY.....400 or 500 model.

Lift up......reel down.

woody with a view - 5-20-2013 at 07:36 PM

that Avet SX looks pretty good at $156 shipped. now, how to wrap it? i've been fishing 30# mono for YT and know nuthin about the various braids, etc....

mulegemichael - 5-20-2013 at 07:42 PM

woody...trust me...spool a 45# braid on that reel and you will never regret it...you will feel that fish exhale on that jig!!....there are so many braids to choose from now it's hard to recommend the best....check em all out on the net and make a decision....but i gotta tell ya; once you start fishing braid, you ain't NEVER goin back!!!....then i'll tell ya how to tie your leader directly to the mainline and now you have NO swivel...which is GOOD..just ask juan at BA...no crap!...you'll be happy1

Unless you know how to tie a braid to mono knot....just spool it up with all mono.
30# is a good all around choice. Larger models of fish will put a hurt on 30# but ain't it fun??

We use Avets to the exclusion of all the other reels because they stand up to a real beating. If you are going to use spectra, don't go with the cheap crap like Power Pro, and instead go to hollow like Jerry Brown or Izorline and then get a threading needle and insert your Mono up the inside like a chinese finger trap and then serve it off with 10 lb. spectra with a little super glue. I have some guys here who fish commercially every day they can get out and land over 2,000 yellowtail a season and the Avet stands up to that abuse with only minor maintence. I personally use an Accurate in addition to my Avets and it is a wonderful reel, but the price goes up accordingly. If you are fishing on the Pacific side you can get by with lighter line, but on the Sea of Cortez side the fish hang close to the rocks and you need a stronger pound test.

Here ya go Woody. We had just got back from Baja and were just going to go Calico fishing. These drags were shot from too many Lisa's, YFT and a Rooster battle.

Let me know if you want to try a Trini 16, Avet Sx, or a Curado300 EJ out before you buy.

Frank - 5-20-2013 at 10:15 PM

This is how I connect my mono top shot to spectra

woody with a view - 5-21-2013 at 04:30 AM

sounds like i'm buying an Avet. thanks for the offer Frank, i'll just go with the recommendations above.

Alan - 5-21-2013 at 07:40 AM

This year I added another Avet to my quiver, an MXL 2-speed on a Calstar 700L. I love this setup! 250 yds of 50# spectra with 100 yds topshot of 30# mono. Fished it almost exclusively during this year's YT bite in La Paz when all of this fish were hovering around the 40# mark. That reel was a dream, capable of 14# drag at full. The best part was the reel is so small and comfortable and you can sling a jig a mile.

I am now thinking my next will be another MX but in the Raptor series that can provide up to 25# of drag. Mounted on a Calstar 700M with 65# spectra I can fish a topshot of 40-50#'s.

I don't know... That drag doesn't sound very smooth to me. It looks like it's slipping. Unless you are thumbing the reel somehow.

Maybe just change the washers.

Skipjack Joe - 5-21-2013 at 08:32 AM

We got this Daiwa Saltist lever drag reel and it casts pretty well. I also have a Torium and the Saltist casts and handles much better than it. It's just a lighter reel. We hauled up YT from over the reefs of Cortez with it and that's pretty tough on a reel. We haven't put it through the stress that Pescador does each year, though.

Frank - 5-21-2013 at 09:38 AM

The drags were shot. My thinking was, we are just going calico bass fishing, one more trip will be ok. I had my thumb on the spool to try to keep him out of the kelp.

Spearo - 5-21-2013 at 05:23 PM

You can't go wrong with an Avet reel. I own an SX and I think its undersized for fish over 30#. For fish over 30 I would go with the two speed LX. Spool it with 65# Jerry Brown spectra with a 100' top shot of mono. I attach all my top shots to spectra with a 14 turn Albright knot. Pass the tag end through the finishing loop twice instead of the called for once. Never had a failure.

rts551 - 5-21-2013 at 05:25 PM

I would think the MX would be a good option.

i just scored a Seeker American A660-6 30# rod off Craigslist. never used $60.

Skipjack Joe - 5-26-2013 at 03:19 PM

You just saved yourself 100 bucks. That rod is equivalent to a $160 calstar. Nice.
