Those are long-finned pilot whales ---- they grow to 20 feet. False killer whales have that grey forward underbelly as in the photo but their average length is 8 feet. I've seen long fins traveling with, feeding with orcas many times in the SOC but the big ID thing is that they are similar in size.

Plenty of books. Look it up.

Willard, not to swerve your nice post but, with apologies, I've been thinking a lot about JenWren lately. For the avid fisherman, in some years (like RIGHT NOW) a grand gets you a lot. A lot more chances at gamefish on a big, quick, long range boat that can find where the little bait is hiding, zip there, try this, try that, zip somewhere else.

Tin boater, launchas, super pangas can't compete with the speed, power and range and when gamefish are scarce (for all the reasons one can count) in Cabo you need to get to the deep banks and here you might need to range from ocho ocho to Frailes and points south all in one day.

Some of us ham and eggers with limited fishing day money, pangas and tin boats will have to content ourselves with more rose snapper and whitefish in the future than dorado and wahoo.

Willard.....Don't mind the diversions from the peanut gallery.

There were some false killer whales in the Loreto last month, as well. They differ from pilots in that they are much more friendly and inclined to play. If my daughter's arm was a little longer she would have been able to pet one as she did earlier with the grays in Mag Bay.

I at first thought that these were pilot whales, until I was corrected by whale experts.
