Saturn from the Sierra San Pedro Martir

astrobaja - 5-24-2013 at 06:27 PM

Hi all,

Took my scope up to km 67 (the Mirador) where I often get good stable (non turbulent) air.

This is a red light image of Saturn, you can see a lot of detail in the surface banding along with the dark hexagonal storm along the north pole.

you can read about this behemoth of a storm here:

Saturn can be seen in the east around 40 degrees high in the sky by about 9:30. You need a small spotting scope to spot its rings though.

If they ever build an airport there that could be their airport code!

Thanks for reminding us that there's more to life than just the Earth!

BajaRat - 5-25-2013 at 11:14 AM

WOW..... really gives you perspective on how small we are in this vast universe. We would love to see more pics like that, thanks

glad to share!! More to come later, hope to get some colour pics too!

BTW -- theres a nice planetary grouping to the west after sunset, you can see Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury all in one tight clump!

Back in the mid 80's there were folks all wrapped around the "Harmonic Convergence" planet alignment and all it was supposed to bring. One of the guys I was working with building a boat said he wanted off to go to Ojai for the weekend. Rob headed up there. When he came back we asked how his weekend went and he told us it was OK but way different than he thought it would be. Rob thought they were having a "Harmonica Convention".

Headed to Baja on Thursday

Astrobaja, how is the road?

Howard - 5-25-2013 at 06:47 PM

How is the road from Highway #1up to your location? Is it paved all the way, dirt, graded or?

I drive to and from Loreto from So. Cal. maybe 2 to 3 times a year and always wanted to go up there.

Loretana - 5-25-2013 at 06:51 PM

That image just made my day, astrobaja!
Muchisima gracias. :D

astrobaja - 5-26-2013 at 08:30 PM

Great story Ed! :)

Howard, the road is paved all the way to the largest dome of the observatory, an easy drive!!

You are most welcome Loretana!
