Have You Purchased Mexican Auto Insurance Lately?

Ateo - 5-26-2013 at 10:53 AM

I renewed my policy today, adding the $300,000 liability that is now recommended due to the new law change.

To my surprise it added another $150 to my policy.

Ouch............

Oh well..........I'm insured.

woody with a view - 5-26-2013 at 10:59 AM

what was the total, and with whom?

Ateo - 5-26-2013 at 11:07 AM

$484.

Last year it was $360.

i'm up for renewal at discover baja. i'm only looking for $10k replacement on top of the legal requirements. their 'any 90 days in baja during the year' policy was around a buck and a half, if i remember right.

I have been using Lewis & Lewis for about 10 years now. never had a claim so I don't know about their actual service when needed. Their rates are very compettetive and I useually take a 6 month. Have not been dinged yet for the new 300,000 liability.

Let us know what it comes out to, if you go for the $300K liability. I was hesitant to do it, but figured if I kill someone and I'm sitting in jail because I was under insured, I would much rather have paid the extra $150 for the extra liability.

Alm - 5-26-2013 at 11:55 AM

They all broker same few Mex companies, like Ace Seguros - don't remember other 2 or 3. So it's not "where" did you buy, but "what". The total varies slightly depending on the broker (i.e. Bajaboiund, Lewis etc). It also varies a lot depending the limits of coverage and on the particular Mex insurer.

curious how many of the locals have upped their insurance:?:

I will bet that most of us are more woried about being sent to jail than if the other guy can pay to fix our truck.

This is an item I don't think receives not nearly the attention
it deserves, 4mo. ago or so, the Mex Govt APPARENTLY
changed the payouts in case of a death in an accident.
One of the San Diego Mex Brokers emailed me back
stating the $300,000 will pay for the death on ONE person,
not sure if they meant it that way, but only ONE? I haven't bought a yr
policy in a while, but that spooked me so, I'm going with
the max I've seen anyone offer of $500, 000 on a policy.
Can you imagine coming up $200,000 short on a Mex
Ins policy? Nightmare doesn't begin to describe it.
In the future if this plays out, there are going to
be some not too friendly outcomes if some Gringo
is involved in an accident with tragic results and is holding
a $50,000 limit. Lewis and Lewis STANDARD libility with their Mex Ins Co.
Qualitis, has always been $300,000, never heard
any reviews on how Qualitis responds to a libility
claim

For the entire country? At least three.

It goes like this: people who know people don't need insurance. They only need the phone numbers for the arbitrators.
Hit 'n Run will continue as a national pastime for those without the numbers.
Foreigners will continue to be blamed for every traffic accident, and every national involved in a wreck with a tourist will sustain a neck injury. Some of those better prepared victims actually carry collar braces in their car.
It's a heavily stacked deck.

It's good for the Mexicans, not you. Buy the insurance, or risk your freedom.

I am not saying that they are better or cheaper, but they have been around for years and they used to take care of all our bills, including auto insurance before we moved full time.

Lewis & Lewis has auto insurance through Qualitas.

Baja Bound has auto insurance through ACE Seguros, HDI Seguros, and now (according to their website) Mapfre Seguros.

http://www.bajabound.com/info/policies/auto.php

These two are not selling policies from the same insurance companies - and all the insurance companies have different credit ratings, and different reputations for payment of claims. Best to do some more checking in with people that have actually had claims with the noted mexican auto insurance companies.

rhintransit - 5-26-2013 at 04:45 PM

I wrote Lewis and Lewis when the 300k info came out. this is what they replied:

"Each Lewis and Lewis Mexican Tourist Auto Insurance policy automatically
includes a $300,000 USD liability limit.

The new limits by Mexican State are attached and the Lewis and Lewis summary
of coverage on the fillable application is also attached for good measure."

Bajahowodd - 5-26-2013 at 04:50 PM

The curious thing about what the Mexican government did is that while they raised the statutory amount one would pay for a death, the legal requirement for the limits of the policy you buy so you won't be jailed, did not change.

It's Mexico, after all.

While I don't wish to be a traitor to those who are members here, I do want to point out that there is another long time non-standard broker located in Santa Cruz that has several carriers they represent and has been in business for a number of years.

My insurance quote went down. Prior I had a policy on a 2006 Itasca Sunstar that I valued at $50000. It was a 12 month policy that expired last month. On that policy I had increased the liability coverage to $100,000 and the annual premium was $908. Tonight I got a quote for the same motorhome with a $300000 liability with the same $50000 value. The quote was $806 with the same carrier.

Leo - 5-27-2013 at 08:58 AM

good for you, Absin.
Still I find your premium a bit high. I have 95,000 with a motorhome and pay less including the 300,000 and US repair rates. This is with Lewis.
