Pedestrian crossing Mexicali West

grace59 - 5-27-2013 at 01:01 PM

Hello Nomads,
I am having to head home tomorrow while my husband is to remain in Baja  I'm catching a flight out of Imperial County at 9:45 am....I am thinking that instead of waiting to cross the border by car with him that I should just take the pedestrian crossing and then find a cab to the airport. Anyone have experience doing this...I am needing to know where the pedestrian crossing is and about how long it might take early in the morning on a Tuesday. Are there usually cabs on the US side?? Seems like crossing by foot should save time, but since I've never done that before ??????
Thanks!

OK, so here are the answers to my questions just in case anyone ever wants to search for the answers in the future! :tumble:
In order to be dropped off at the Pedestrian Crossing at the West Gate...have the person driving you follow the border fence toward the gate in the very left (through) lane. When you can go no further turn left...there you will see a Pagoda on the right and a covered Walkway. Take the covered walkway down some stairs and there will be the line for Pedestrian crossings.
There are actually 3 lines...one for those with Sentri Passes or "Ready Lane" cards such as a Passport Card. This line seemed to move along in half the time of the "Regular" Lane. One lane is designated for handicapped persons and the middle lane is for everyone else. I got in line at 7:25 thinking that that would get me over the border quickly! Wrong! There is a "Border wait time" page that includes Pedestrian wait times. When I got in line the wait was suppose to be 1 hour. Wrong again!
After waiting in line for an hour and a half, I finally got up to the rudest CBP ever. He was yelling at the poor person ahead of me who seemed not to understand English well and seemed a bit "challenged". He gave me crap about not knowing the protocal for swiping my passport, but I kindly apologized and repeated that it was my first time crossing this way.
When you finally emerge from the building look to the right in front of the McDonalds and you will see the Taxi lineup. Luckily for me, I got a cab driver that would make any team on the Amazing Race happy. I got into the cab aat 9:05 and told him that I had a 9:45 flight out of Imperial County airport...he got me there speedy quick. (cost of cab was 35.00 plus a big tip from a happy me).
I took Seaport Airlines to San Diego. Cost was 39.00 one way. It lands at the commuter terminal and then there is a free shuttle to take you to the other terminals. There are two flights a day and the plane can hold 8 passengers.
Well, that's the story....next time I have to do this I am going to go to the East Crossing and just spend the extra $ for the cab as I noticed on line that the wait time for Pedestrian crossings was ziltch!!!

That border wait site claimed 1:30 hr. last Sat. at 2 pm, at San Ysidro for the reg car line, logic tells me they hadn't
updated since 7 am. Do I read this right one swipes their
own Passport when ped crossing at Mexicali?

Yes, there was a machine for people to swipe their passport into...face down....I was trying to get this to work when the CBP finished yelling at the guy ahead of me and let him through....so I moved up to him and he proceeded to yell at me about not swiping my Passport in the machine...and then swiped my Passport into HIS machine!!:mad:
