Tunaeater Wins Baja 500 class

TMW - 6-6-2013 at 11:34 AM

Our own Tunaeater and team won the Sportsman under class at the Baja 500 race last weekend, even beating the Sportsman Over class. This is their second win in the SCORE Baja series. The final race is the Baja 1000 in November. If they win it or finish well (probably top 3) the Class Championship will be theirs.

I'd like to say a big "Thank You" to my family, race team, chasers and sponsors. Especially Mark Winkleman who has given me the opportunity to race on his team since 2007.

This was my 9th Baja 500 and a very special one since we got the win not only in our class but all sportsman classes (by the way they are all special). It was a dream of mine to participate in the Baja 500 so many years ago. All we wanted to do was go to Baja ride fast and finish safely.

Our race program has improved and we have a great team. This win gives us two first place finishes out of the three series race. San Felipe 250 & Baja 500. November brings the Grand Daddy of them all the Baja 1,000.

I sure love hearing about folks fulfilling their dreams...well done and muchas felicidades.

Congratulations on your 500 win!!!

Where can we find the results for the sportsman mc classes? I couldn't find it on the SCORE website. I wanted to compare the overall times of the sportsman mc vs class 22 mc. With a 100ish mile shortcut where did the pros catch the first sportsman bike? At rm 250 (MSR) the lead sportsman bike had a 40 minute over the lead pro bike..

Congrats tunaeater. What was your race number on the bike? Maybe I have a photo of you coming thru El Coyote.

That's just fantastic! Congrats to Paul and his team!!

Pauls bike number was 249X. Ateo said several Sportmans bikes passed El Coyote before the first Pro came by 1X. So I would guess the 1X probably didn't pass the last Sportsman until near the coast. I had heard that a Sportsman was like the 5th bike to finish but I don't know that as a fact. Here are some pictures of Paul and family at the 500 race.

Forgive my ignorance but ....

What is the difference between
Sportsman under
Sportsman over
and Pro?

Ateo - 6-7-2013 at 11:45 AM

TW: are those photos from the hotel palmas parking lot? If so, I was there last week, maybe when these photos were taken. I'm looking for 249x photos from last week. I think they came thru way before the pro bikes at Coyote.

I think Paul stayed at the Ensenada Inn but a couple of the pictures Look like they were at the Desert Inn where Honda stayed.

Bob Sportsman Under is for MCs under 450cc and Sportsman Over is for MCs over 450cc. However the 450cc MCs from Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Sazuki and KTM are all 249cc most of the racers except pro class 20 (250cc limit) all race on a 450cc bike. Class 30, 40, 50, and 60 can run anything they want, they are age classes. This applies to the ATVs too. So in effect all the MCs except class 20 could be racing a 450 bike.
