the baja surfers should be real stoked with this big a$$ swell that hit here today....here are some highlights from the blowhole...not a good day for fishing off the rocks! and abalone fishing has been suspended till further notice...the waves sound like a freight train coming!

WOW!

Ateo - 6-6-2013 at 04:05 PM

Yeah, it is pumping here in Oceanside. This swell annihilated Tahiti last week.

shari - 6-6-2013 at 08:03 PM

at high tide the blowhole area looked like a jacuzzi...

our own waterfall!

and the sunset was even more spectacular with spray over it!

Its big, thumpy and closed out in north San Diego county.

Is anybody getting clean swell?

Lets see some pics (be vague with location) ;D

woody with a view - 6-6-2013 at 08:19 PM

woody with a view - 6-6-2013 at 08:25 PM

that's the problem with these BIG swells, that shaun styles hypes for a solid week. it's too big!

Pterodactyls would be going off!

Curt63 - 6-6-2013 at 08:27 PM

Did somebody say Fiji and surf?

This is a long but epic video with unique perspectives. Anyone that has driven a small boat will pucker up at some of the footage.

Go ahead and watch it... its worth it

That tower running over the kite was perfect.

Paddle in, jump off or tow in?

El Jefe - 6-6-2013 at 09:24 PM

I rode the 10-4 gun today. Got several mackers. Pretty fun out there. Heh!

Bajaboy - 6-6-2013 at 09:33 PM

I had a blast at Cherokee Point today....represent:!:

acadist - 6-7-2013 at 03:48 AM

Thinking about going camping on the continental divide this weekend, when the big one hits and the swell I will be on the beach:lol:

Howard - 6-7-2013 at 07:06 AM

This video brings the sport to a whole new level, unbelievable!

I think the real crazies were the people in the boats with no floatation devises being worn.

The Sculpin - 6-7-2013 at 07:34 AM

Just got back and had a chance to hit rattlesnakes for a few........very nice.........

Udo - 6-7-2013 at 08:32 AM

Particularly the blue boat who was within a breath of capsizing backwards on one wave...his boat was completely airborne!
I do agree, also, about the lack of PFDs.

Shari:

That last photo of the sunset and the large wave crash in the foreground is a prize winner!

BajaBlanca - 6-7-2013 at 09:13 AM

the ocean here is MEAN too. freight train describes the sound aptly. more rip tides than I could count.

that video is absolutely incredible.

Bob H - 6-7-2013 at 09:33 AM

Shari, love your photos! Would love to hear the sound of water hitting those rocks... wow...

I drive up and down the coast to Laguna Niguel and back to San Diego every day, and the swells were very big here, too. 100's of surfers everywhere.

Oh, if I could only still get out there :o

zforbes - 6-7-2013 at 09:50 AM

means good beach combing

shari - 6-7-2013 at 10:06 AM

thank you Udo....I just love taking photos of waves crashing...I can never get enough of it...it's so addicting...just one more big set! Here are some of this mornings waves...they are a bit smaller than yesterday.

8 ft surf at Windansea in San Diego this morning

Osprey - 6-7-2013 at 04:45 PM

Wow, looooved the Tihiti video. I'm stoked. Got in the truck, ran over to Los Barriles and bought one a those boogie boards. It's just that foam stuff but it looks like the right style, the dynamic for waves. Now my plan is to take it down to the beach real early when some of the fishing boats go by and hope they come in close, make a wake. I want to feel the danger, I want to risk it all for the thrill. Of course if they go slow or stay way out I'll just be bobbin' around waiting for something that might not happen. Nothin' new about that for me.

Should I put a rope on the thing, tie it to my ankle somehow? I don't think that thing would hold me up, save me from drowning. Not sure how to use those thong things whatever they're called. Man I get so excited I get ahead of myself.

shari - 6-7-2013 at 05:34 PM

Osprey...tie it to your thong!:O

a note about the huge swell...Juan's canoe got washed away as well as some other fisherman's bongitos(dinghies). He is bummed as it was such a great boat...the problem here is that hardly any fishermen have dinghies so they all "borrow" each others but with a canoe...nobody used it cause it is foreign and so intimidating...sooooooo...Juan asked me to see if someone has an old canoe hangin about...not problem if it is old and holed...he will fix it.

Osprey - 6-7-2013 at 05:56 PM

Woody, Woody, help me out here.

mulegemichael - 6-7-2013 at 06:11 PM

jorge...stay off the boogie boards; you'll hurt yerself bad...that was/is another generation...trust me on this.

Udo - 6-7-2013 at 06:38 PM

I'll look for one on our local craigslist, Shari. I'll send you the link when I find one.

shari - 6-7-2013 at 08:13 PM

gracias amigo...and for tonights sunset eye c-cktail....

BajaLuna - 6-7-2013 at 08:46 PM

You really captured the beauty, Shari! I especially like the last one in the set, before the single one you posted, looks like a purple portal in the sky!

Bob H - 6-7-2013 at 08:49 PM

Oh My, Shari, that first shot of the blowhole, in your second (morning) series, is a contest winner! Incredible power in that shot!

woody with a view - 6-8-2013 at 06:48 AM

from yesterday.

shari - 6-8-2013 at 07:19 AM

thank you Luna & Bob...I think that blowhole shot Bob mentioned is my new favorite...I never tire of photographing the blowhole...often mysterious ghostlike figures come out of that orifice! Playing with the photos is my artistic outlet since I cant draw or paint worth chite....

the swell event is over...the kids caught some good waves at the little cove ensenadita next to our place last night...hmmm...now what will I photograph? My second favorite subject!

have a great sabado everyone.
