WANTED DEAD or ALIVE...a beater canoe!

shari - 6-7-2013 at 05:53 PM

the giant swell yesterday took it's toll...it came clear up to the road at the beach access and Juan's canoe got washed away as well as some other fisherman's bongitos(dinghies).

He is bummed as it was such a great boat because the problem here is that hardly any fishermen have dinghies so they all "borrow" each others so they get trashed but with a canoe...nobody used it cause it is foreign and so intimidating. The guys think they will flip over in it...sooooooo...Juan asked me to see if someone has an old canoe hangin about...not a problem if it is old and holed...he will fix it.

I have an old canoe but it isn't old and holed. It has lasted for years and will last till time ends. Made of cedar. You can stand in it and it wont flip. Not cheap though. It's in P. Abreojos. If interested, send U2U with your land-line phone #.

thanks guero but we are looking for a cheapo cause it gets real beat up being used as a tender dragged up on beaches, over rocks...full of big yellowtail!!!

Perfect example of how innovation changes culture. Wasn't that long ago those folks were most likely fishing from canoes. I remember in the 1960s one only saw canoes in La Paz. These were made out of single trees and most were imported from Nayarit, over on the mainland. Good luck finding one, I would think any you find would be worth preserving as a past of the peninsula's history. I haven't seen anything repairable in decades.

PS I wouldn't mind seeing a photo of a bonquito, if you happen to have one you could post. Always interested in local fishing communities.

thanks all

bongitos are any kind of tender or dinghy that fishermen use to row out to their anchored pangas...and they come in all shapes and sizes here...whatever comes along.
