La Fonda or La Mision

tunaeater - 6-9-2013 at 08:24 AM

Being that I will be taking my sons to Bahia de Los Angeles for a boys only fishing trip starting next Friday. My wife told me that when we get back she would like us to take her down to spend the night and eat lobster. Somewhere close to San Diego. I was thinking La Fonda or La Mision since we have never been there. Somewhere we can park the car, walk on the beach, have some drinks, a nice dinner and spend the night. Thanks for your suggestions

Neither, stay at Poco Cielo, between the two.

Ateo - 6-9-2013 at 08:42 AM

the Mexican way of preparing lobster over an open flame or broiled tends to dry it out. slather salsa on it and its okay, but boiling is best in my opinion.

Poco Cielo looks very nice thanks for the suggestion Just emailed for info.

Lobster, tortilla, butter with rice and beans and a cold Pacifico

I went to La Fonda last Friday night and met my son and his surfing buddies. The rooms were acceptable, with balconies right on the beach, for about $80. From what I hear Bungalow 21 is right on the beach for $105 nightly. What I liked about La Fonda was their $3.00 (american money) tacos, fish, carne asada...the band was excellent and there was dancing. The place is really pretty, the band plays Creedence Clearwater, beatles and Joan Sebastian, and Mexican music as well. It was very pretty all lit up and the staff was very nice. A great time was had by all!!

Isn't Puerto Nuevo style deep fried? Seems to me that a whole town with a bunch of restaurants grew on that style.

I have a Condo by La Mision.......for the best food I like Splash and the Lighthouse

liknbaja127 - 6-9-2013 at 05:55 PM

Go 30 min. further south and stay a Los Rosas, just before you get to
Ensenda. Right on the water, great rooms, good food, and realy nice
people! your wife will love it. 4 star in my book. and If you like steak,
1 mile south of there, Sanos another great place! get a cab, they have a
great bar also. Enjoy.

Los pescadores in the sisters cut them in half, slather mustard on the meat and fry them in some oil......sure tasted good.

Agreed, but steamed is even better, keeps the moisture in and doesn't blanche out the flavor. The only problem with boiling or steaming is you don't get the Mesquite taste.

elgatoloco - 6-10-2013 at 06:48 PM

Sashimi the tail meat its sweet and succulent. Use the rest of the bug for lobster miso soup.

i'm just saying that isn't my favorite way to eat lobster. i can catch my own, or know who to get them from so i don't eat at PN....

EnsenadaDr - 6-10-2013 at 07:05 PM

anytime I went to PN, they always asked me if I wanted them fried or boiled; apparently a lot of Americans like them broiled or boiled.

willardguy - 6-10-2013 at 07:38 PM

how would madison eat it?;D

weebray - 6-11-2013 at 04:26 PM

Is La Fonda still in the habit of sneaking an extra entree on the bill? We have not been back for 3-4 years because the last three times we ate there they tried that trick at one breakfast sitting and two dinners.

Tunaeater...

Poco Cielo is our place of choice.
We normally stay at the Polynesian room, because of the large room and kitchen and especially the private deck.Their new rooms above the new bar area really look nice.
The Polynesian room we usually book for our anniversary. The rock shower is really incredible!
Food is outstanding...the chef has several of my recipes. (not that I'm blowing my own horn, because they already had great food, it just got enhanced a bit.

huh, file this under different strokes but i've found their food to have no culinary vision and totally lacking progressive creativity!

Udo - 6-11-2013 at 05:48 PM

You have not had the POCO CIELO omelet for breakfast, or their fish en papillon, for dinner, willardguy. Their steamed clams are only second to Muelle Tres.

David K - 6-12-2013 at 12:28 AM

I remember buying live lobster from Ortega's place (upstairs) to take home and cook it our way.

1) Drop the bugs in boiling water to quickly kill them and cook the meat, anout 10-15 min. depending on size.

2) Split the bugs in half, apply butter, garlic and slide under the broiler for 3-5 minutes.

Enjoy!!!
