Los Arcos Hotel in La Paz

tripledigitken - 6-10-2013 at 07:41 AM

Does anyone have an update on the hotel? Is it still shuttered?
Is there still talk of it reopening?

Marinero - 6-10-2013 at 07:43 AM

It was still shuttered and locked up a couple of weeks ago. No signs, no indication of reopening. I have not heard of any plans to do so.

bajajudy - 6-10-2013 at 07:46 AM

No.
I dont think that it will ever re-open. Too much money owed the union members for all these years.

tripledigitken - 6-10-2013 at 07:46 AM

I was hoping for another answer, but, it has been closed for such a long time...................

Still closed

The property continues to deteriorate. We go by a couple of times a week and there are generally some union members sitting in chairs on the porch. They have a list of those who is supposed to be there. An article in the local newspaper a few months ago confirmed the strikers who sit on the porch have no idea what the dispute is about -- they just come and sit when told to do so.

I assume this also applies to the "Las Casas de los Arcos" across the street towards downtown La Paz----------a truly delightful place in it's day where we stayed numerous times. (swimming pool, too).

Bummer. That was a great place for a Negro Modelo. My best friends's grandpa had a house a few blocks away and we'd go there every night while we were visiting him.

At least we have the memories of the fishing, long strolls on the malecon, delicious dinners in interesting restaurants and an excellent location. Nothing lasts forever, except the memories.

Misspent a lot of time in the Pelicanos bar. Good memories, sad to hear how things shook out at Los Arcos.

Stick a fork in it. We live 2 blocks from it and are saddened every day we walk by it. Coppola and the sindicato have been fighting for years. Finally after years of animosity Coppola shut the doors. We hear it's partly political but whatever, as was mentioned, the property now carries with it a huge burden of back wages. So far Coppola has lost in court but it's still being litigated. IMHO both parties are culpabily intractable here. Que lastima La Paz.
An interesting sidelight here is that when Alaska airlines pulled out of La Paz one of their reasons was the lack of hotel space here. We are spending millions to attract tourists yet the gov. here does not hint of sticking there nose in here to adjudicate this mess. In its time it was the jewel of BCS. It still could be but it will take some reasonable people with DEEP pockets to revive it. Some have suggested it will be turned into condos but remember the sindicato has effectively placed a lien on the property and every day that lien grows.

Greatest sunsets in La Paz when the windows would swivel open

It was 1999 when we stayed, thought it lovely, with the indoor pool viewed from second floor hallway. And what a sight to walk out in the morning, the arch out -lining the serene bay with the sailboats at anchorage. We met a couple from the Nome, Alaska region there, in the days Alaska Air still brought frozen northerners to thaw out in La Paz. Hard to believe it's been closed.

We have stayed there two or three times.... the cabanas side... how SAD! And, the food at the restaurant was fantastic!

If you think the Union problem can be solved look at the abortion on the Marina in Cabo. Same thing.

So typical of most labor disputes in Mx. Just a lose/lose/lose proposition. The owners, the employees and the community.

Hey, Ken...

Give Casa Tuscany B&B a try.

It is two block away right behind the Aplebees. Great breakfasts and rooms are outstanding. It's about 75 steps from the malecon without the car traffic.

tripledigitken - 6-11-2013 at 07:17 AM

Thanks for the tip!

Casa Tuscany is great. Another good B&B is Angel Azul, just a few blocks away.

There are plenty of nice places to stay in La Paz but none even come close to the grand old Los Arcos Hotel.

Kgryfon - 6-11-2013 at 04:38 PM

I loved the Los Arcos Cabanas! In fact, I was trying to book a cabana there and couldn't get through, so I Googled Los Arcos and that is how I originally found this message board. I really wish they would re-open but I realize that's not likely anytime soon. Too bad. Sounds like a "cutting your nose off to spite your face" kind of situation.

Well, of course that is true. Sigh.......

I assume you are talking about the Union position, and I agree.
The owners are under no obligation to meet the Union demands, and they do have alternatives, which they excercised..

So, a beautiful old historic private hotel that offered a great experience at reasonable prices is no more.

BTW......................

I forgot to mention...........

When they are in town, Rod Hall and Robbie Gordon stay at Casa Tuscany. PLus several bikers.
The owner like Pinot Griggio as a house warming gift if you want to butter her up!

And imagine if the union actually wins the property in court and then tries to run it. They would go broke within a couple of months.

I remember a few years ago when the same thing happened at La Fonda and they boarded up the place. After a couple years, they just moved it into another building (I think the owner's home) and started over. The OLD La Fonda restaurant, I think, is now some kind of spa, or something like that.

willardguy - 6-13-2013 at 07:39 PM

the old restaurant is still there sitting vacant, only thing missing is dmytriw and macpherson! I gotta admit the new restaurant is pretty swanky, but I thought the old place was pretty swanky too!
