Thank Bob... I have the ingredients!

mojo_norte - 6-10-2013 at 05:44 PM

I've looked for it in Baja - have not seen it. Where can one find it down the peninsula?

David K - 6-10-2013 at 10:44 PM

Which, the plant, the bottle, or the margarita?

The bottle - Damiana

dtbushpilot - 6-11-2013 at 06:23 AM

I like Damiana ok for sipping but don't care for it in my margarita. I usually order mine "sin Damiana"

mulegemichael - 6-11-2013 at 06:54 AM

just about any store that sells booze in baja sur sells damiana...and lots of plants growing around la ribera for making some awesome tea!

What do the plants look like and what are they called? Photos?

Bob, come by (you still have the AAA maps?) and I will make you one... then you can watch a Baja movie until you are safe to drive again! We are moving soon, so will be a last time to come over. Do you want any rocks or shells for decoration. I have some big chunks of onyx from El Marmol that may not fit where we are moving! Just call to see if I am home...

MitchMan - 6-30-2013 at 11:25 AM

I use Damiana in Baja in place of Grand Marnier as Grand Marnier costs 2.5 to 3 times more than Damiana. I make Cadillac Margaritas using a float of Damiana instead of a float of Grand Marnier...very excellent substitute for Grand Marnier.

Also, I save some money on margaritas by not buying Margarita Mix and use the following recipe at home:

1 shot tequila
1 shot of orange juice
1 shot of fresh squeezed lime juice
2 heaping tablespoons of sugar (vary according to your own taste)
1 cup of ice cubes
Pre-Mix all ingredients, except for the ice cubes, to dissolve the sugar first, then pour in a blender with the ice cubes and blend for 1 minute. Or, blend all ingredients, including the ice cubes, without pre-mixing for 2 minutes. Serve with a splash/float of Damiana on top.

I don't use triple sec anymore as it has become too expensive (similar to cost of tequila) and the % of alcohol content varies by multiples from brand to brand. Plus, I don't think the orange flavor/scent is strong enough anymore in triple sec. With my Margarita recipe, you get plenty of flavoring with the orange juice and the Damiana.

Try CONTROY in place of triple sec. It's the Mexican "licor de naranjas", in the square green bottle.

bajagrouper - 6-30-2013 at 01:03 PM

I find it amusing that a liquor made in Mexico had an Incan fertility goddess inspired bottle, there are many Mayan goddesses with that same shape....

edm1 - 6-30-2013 at 04:26 PM

I was introduced to Damiana when Bajatripper (Steve) gave me a big bottle when I visited La Paz. I usually use Grand Marnier but the Damiana, alongside a bottle of Patron, made an impressive drink for my Hawaiian visitors a month later.

I haven't seen another bottle since, even as I look in local liqour stores.

Damiana

O.G. - 7-1-2013 at 11:32 AM

How come no one has stated the little known fact that Damiana is an aphrodisiac? All old time bartenders know this.:o:o

mulegemichael - 7-1-2013 at 07:35 PM

yeah, o.g., that's what first got me interested in its qualities....the bush itself grows all over in the hills around la ribera and manny, the longtime bartender at punta colorada, first turned me onto it...i had been using all the other liqueours forever in my margaritas but fell in love with the nuances of damiana as a replacement the first time i tasted it...we bring a couple of bottles back north everytime we head this way....just about every booze store in mulege carries it and it's really affordable...knockers up!!!

Wow, I just saw this reply for the first time. I am sure it's too late. Hope your move went well. And, yes, I still have the AAA Baja maps for you!

David K - 7-2-2013 at 03:49 PM

Hi Bob, I am responding on my phone at the new place. This was no fun. A lot of rocks including El Marmol onyx and sea shells are homeless... ha ha. We are much closer now to work and friends right off the 78. Will miss the little house. Maybe a visit with you and Audrey? After we have settled in.

willardguy - 7-2-2013 at 04:12 PM

I had posted this a year and a half ago, good time for another go round. keep in mind this is from a paper dated 1919! DAMIANA

Therapy—A mild nerve tonic claimed to be valuable in the treatment of sexual impotence. Some of our physicians praise it highly for its influence in sexual neurasthenia, and it is said to correct frigidity in the female.

It had long enjoyed a local reputation as a stimulant tonic of the sexual apparatus among the natives of Mexico, before it attracted the attention of the profession. Besides its peculiar action on the sexual appetite and function, it is a general tonic, somewhat cathartic, and is slightly cholagogue.

The midwives and women of loose morals of Western Mexico also attribute emmenagogue properties to it.

It is valuable in renal and cystic catarrh and in general irritation of the urinary passages, through its influence in soothing irritation of mucous membranes.

In the line of the action of this remedy in its influence upon the reproductive organs, Dr. Reid mentions dysmenorrhea, headache, at the menstrual epoch, bad complexion, rough or discolored patches on the skin with acne, especially of a severe type, depending upon uterine irritation. Eruption resembling eczema, from insufficient menstruation.

Dr. Watkins gives as its further indications, delayed or suppressed menstruation in young girls, irregularity at the beginning of menstruation, amenorrhea in very young girls. It will certainly allay sensitiveness of the sympathetic nervous system to irritations caused by disorders of the womb and ovaries. The remedy must be given in full doses, to accomplish these results. From five to ten grains of the extract is necessary three or four times a day, and persisted in. The writer has been using it as suggested, and has been very well satisfied with it.

In a mixed margarita the Controy works fine, and the agave syrup is a better sweetener than sugar. I don't float it on top so I can't vouch for Controy in that style.

volcano - 10-22-2013 at 06:18 AM

unfortunately cows love Damiana too and keep my wild little bushes trimmed in my absence...EastCape Rd

shari - 10-22-2013 at 06:50 AM

another way to drink Damiana is in a snifter with half and half with tequila oer ice....for sipping. the damiana softens the harshness of the tequila and the tequila dampens the sweetness of damiana so they are perfect companions. Sometimes I add a splash of peach juice so it lasts longer...that will grease the old wheels!!!!! hahahaha....

you can buy it at Costco and Controy for margaritas is only 75 pesos a bottle at Costco too..a deal and I use it in margaritas and save the Damiana for....ahem....special occasions:rolleyes:

I've heard Damiana described as "the Mexican Viagra".

monoloco - 10-22-2013 at 07:18 AM

Damiana:

We have well over 100 plants that we took care not to disturb when we built our home. It makes a great tea when combined with lemon grass and a little honey.

You gotta try Agavero - tequila with damiana - a liquour. Wonderful.

"Anejo and Reposado Tequila blended with Agavero's secret ingredient, the essence of Damiana Flower, a flower indigenous to the hot mountains of Jalisco. Agavero's unique and wonderful combination offers a scintillating aroma for the nose transcended only by the rich and flavorful character for the palate."
