Pic of completed garage

drzura - 6-14-2013 at 02:20 PM

Well... After one year, the garage is finally complete (sort of). I initially was looking at cargo containers, but after the ridiculous price quotes, we decided to have a cinder block garage built and we are very happy with it. The old wooden shed was all rotted out and broken into multiple times. This should be more secure.

Hello Barry. Yep.. them are steel doors. We had them made in Santa Rosalia.

See what happens when you ask Nomads their opinions?!! Very nice and solid. Make sure those welds are tight w/multiple latches on interior. New post re "cabin" is relative. This will get ya started and help you sleep at nite. The Palapa House is next, verdad?!:no: Tio

That looks pretty secure, and not ugly either. I like the blue. Does the small door open from the inside if locked?

Yep. If the side door is locked, it can be opened from the inside as well. The light blue is pretty nice. Right now there is no power going to the garage, we may work on that next year depending on the finances.

Very nice. I think we had some conversations in the past via U2U regards shipping containers, and getting them to central Baja. I too found them prohibitively expensive. Buying materials locally and using local labor is also an upside to building. It would be great if you would share the dimensions and approx. costs of materials and labor. I'm assuming the roof is framed with lumber, and covered with metal laminas?

Looks really nice, and secure. I won't ask the cost, I swear I won't.

same kind of door I had...the thief drilled the lock out, of course after unbolting the hurricane shutters

Probably used a cordless drill that he stole from someone else's bodega.

Looks to me the easiest way to break into that thing would be to fall through the roof .:lol::lol::lol:

The sad thing is we have to go to such elaborate means to try and protect our belonging's.:no:

I have seen block walls broken open with double jacks. They don't fill every cell in Mexico. Two guys can break through a wall really fast.

Years ago we used offshore containers as tool sheds at construction sites. The thief's just started bringing cutting torches and cutting a hole in the side. :light:

This entire discussion is making me depressed. :(

Its a little over 600 square feet. The garage was built over one year as we saved money. So, these are rough estimates.

1. Structure: cinder blocks, rebar, cement, lamina, metal beams for roof, plywood, sand, labor... about $7,000.00

2. Stucco, concrete sand for interior and exterior finish plus concrete floor in garage with labor.... about $2,000.00

3. Metal doors and metal bars for the two windows with installation... $1,300.00

4. Two windows with installation.... about $240.00

Thanks for providing the details, I'm sure many other folks other than myself appreciate the info you provided - that's what this forum should be about. Unfortunately it seems more often than not a post gets hijacked by the vocal and prolific 'regulars' who have nothing better to do than post their random thoughts and opinions on topics not necessarily related to the original post. That's why they call this a forum I suppose.

That's a good looking building, and should serve you well for you needs.
