Deliberate Acts of Kindness

Gypsy Jan - 6-14-2013 at 04:13 PM

We have an arrangement with a local restaurant that gets a lot of business.

The kitchen washes the leftovers and packages them up for us.

I boil up the the leftovers into a soup to supplement our dog food.

We never feed them the bones or residue - after one round, it is supposed to be thrown out.

Our housekeeper asked me if she could take the "trash" home to feed the homeless dogs in her ejido.

Well, yes.

DavidE - 6-14-2013 at 05:30 PM

A large bone to gnaw on is a must for dogs. Ask a vet. On some dogs an hour of gnawing is like a couple of martinis for a human.

BajaBlanca - 6-14-2013 at 06:48 PM

What a great idea.

Marinero - 6-14-2013 at 07:32 PM

I understand that all natural bones and not good for all dogs. I have been recommended Nylabones, man made stuff. Any feedback?

liknbaja127 - 6-14-2013 at 07:58 PM

My wife says NO chicken bones, for dogs they can not digest them!
but they love a good beef bone:P

El Comadante Loco - 6-15-2013 at 09:16 AM

Dogs are dogs and have been genetically designed to chew, eat and digest bones if fact if bones were harmful we would not see so many stray and homeless dogs on the street or perhaps this is testament to survival of the fittest.

I have never bought into the idea that you should not feed your dogs bones including chicken. In over 50yrs of having a variety of breeds larger and small never has there been any problems iwth bones. They can't wait for that tasty chicken bone to be tossed their way.

Now if your perro is to delicado to do bones I submit to you that it is not a dog but rather a man made mutant ha ha..

bent-rim - 6-15-2013 at 10:51 AM

Dogs should only be given raw bones-not chicken though. Cooking a bone hardens the bone and makes it splinter. We give our lab marrow bones and when the marrow is gone we fill it with banana and freeze it. She loves it, but being a lab she'll eat anything but lemons.

willardguy - 6-15-2013 at 11:00 AM

who wouldn't love a banana bonecycle?

Chicken bones aren't good for any animals, they're soft and they splinter.

My dog would love one of your banana freeze bones but would take issue with not getting her chicken bones. She is a big boxer and has eaten them since she was a puppy..

Question how many nomads have lost a dog or had a dog injured by the notorious chicken bone

Death by Chicken Bone

Gypsy Jan - 6-15-2013 at 01:24 PM

The street-wise dogs we have adopted - zip, zero, none.

The spoiled, hand-raised home dogs with no survival skills, none; because we don't trust them to have common sense, so we don't give them chicken bones.

We lost my favorite husky by giving her a ham bone to chew on. The chewed off flakes packed together and impacted in her intestines and died on the operating table. It broke my heart.

Gladys our 5 yr old boxer has just released her first training video on the proper techniques of Zen and the art of eating chicken bones. In fact she loves other people's dogs so much she is willing to send every dog owner her trusted technique of eating chicken bones but of course she does have a small handing and shipping fee. Do not let your dog go another day without enjoying the pure pleasure of eating chicken bones..
I must be bored and have way to much time on my hands..:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Neal Johns, I am so sorry

For the loss of your dog.

so you're saying that when a feral dog catches a bird it is a bad idea for the dog to eat it?

DebMer - 6-16-2013 at 12:05 PM

As a poster above stated, it's the cooked bones that splinter and harm dogs. Raw bones are a-okay, so a dog killing a bird or other animal and eating the bones is safe (and happy). So says my hubby, a doggy care research fanatic. You can also give them bones that are soft from being cooked a long time (i.e. broth-making).

And hello, I'm Debbie. First post, but have been registered for a while. :)

Welcome Debbie

Thanks for this post -- and to clarify the confusion:

COOKED CHICKEN BONES = BAD FOR DOGS

UNCOOKED CHICKEN BONES = OK FOR DOGS

I'm sorry but you're wrong on this one. One of my Jack Russells got in the trash and swiped a chicken bone once. We didn't know what was happening until we heard him gagging in the next room. The chicken bone had splintered while he was eating it and got lodged in his throat. I was able to get my fingers in his mouth and pull everything out but there was blood every where and not a pretty sight. It's hard telling what would of happened if we weren't home. Please don't feed your dogs chicken bones or pork bones, they can splinter and end up daggers, not only in their throat but stomach and intestines as well.

Coyotes will eat rocks. Had one stroll right by my house this AM. Walked up the road toward La Buf like he owned it.

I have to agree with this....not so much the splintering part which I don't disagree with, but why take the chance?

Mulegena - 6-16-2013 at 03:55 PM

Certain bones, like the long-bones of chicken and pork, can splinter.
Animals can die from perforated throats, esophagus, stomach, intestine or colon.

If your healthy dog becomes lethargic and holds up a back leg it may indicate there is a bone lodged somewhere in the intestine. Only an x-ray can confirm this and surgery is the safest way to save the dog's life.

I've assisted in numerous spays of dogs who live at the dump.
Even dogs as young as 6 months have intestines visibly scarred from eating trash.

I do give my dogs bones, cooked and uncooked, but only selectively, each examined first.

Now, back on track to Gypsy's thread: Its great she has this arrangement with her favorite restaurant and is sharing in the distribution with her friends.

A friend sent me an email on foods a dog should avoid. One food on the list was apples. Right up there with chocolate.

I've fed my dog an apple every day for 13 years. Sorry. That's misinformation.

My neighbor feeds her pedigreed dog half an uncooked chicken every day -- says it's good for her dog and that's that.

Before I believe uncooked chicken is bad for dogs, I"ll believe people are generally superstitious.

Bob H - 6-16-2013 at 08:26 PM

I have been told NEVER give your dog cooked bones.... that's not natural! Never chicken bones... but beef bones, uncooked, are OK. That's the way they would eat them in the wild. Never give your dog cooked bones! NEVER!

I've heard just the opposite for beef bones. Boil them to kill bacteria in the marrow.

You're friend is wrong. It's grapes that's not good, not apples.

It doesn't matter if your dog is pedigreed or not. That's the same thing as saying I gave a Irish person some pasta.

Still No Chicken Bones Given Out

Gypsy Jan - 6-17-2013 at 12:27 PM

But, today I caught my eight-month-old Rottie puppies eating my socks that they stole out of the hamper.

I took those away, too.

Exactly. It's not apples but the list I received was forwarded from the internet.

I'm making a distinction between pedigree NOB dogs and feral MX dogs SOB. That's the same thing as saying Taco Bell is MX food.
