Japanese Tsunami Flotsam & Jetsam showing up?

shari - 6-15-2013 at 09:42 PM

Some of us living here do alot of beach-combing in our area and like to share and compare what we find. Strangely enough we have all been finding small childrens toys lately...something that was uncommon before. David (of Nan & D fame) suggested that these may be the first of flotsam and jetsam showing up on our beaches. Here are some that Toni & I found...some of them are toys I have never seen the like of before around here...what do you think?

The blue crotch on that doll is kind of bizarre.

The GOOD news IS ..................

There may be a money-making opportunity there on E-Bay !

BTW, "Technically" they aren't Flotsam and (assuming they resulted from the Tsunami sweeping over the land) wouldn't be Jetsam either.

Heartbreaking in that the photo offers a child's tale of the tsunami's effects if this originated overseas...once again the ocean offers up a story from it's depths.

Not to mention that the doll appears to be a double amputee.

Okay so flotsam is a floating wreckage of a ship or its cargo while jetsam is material jettisoned from a ship to lighten its load....what do we call this stuff---tsunami-sam?

Stimulating Sea-Stuff

Actually, the use of the term(s) has become so commonplace to refer to any sort of sea-borne debris that it really doesn't matter.

It was merely an attempt to add to the discussion.

Interesting stuff there Shari. The timing is right for this to be true. More info here...

Actually, they all seem a little bizarre. It would be interesting to find out where these are coming from.

Isn't that the color of disposable diapers?

Our fire department recently received a class(from hazmat experts) on what to expect from the Tsunami debris that will begin to wash up on our San Diego beaches. By all account, the experts expect it to reach us within the next year. They dont have any concerns of the possibility of radiation due to the fact that the radiation plume drifted north east while the debris washed out to sea westward. If there is a "remote" chance that it was radioactive, they think that the time spent at sea(and the sun) would have mitigated any worries.
The biggest concern they are warning us of is hazardous materials (toxins/poisons/chemicals) washing up in drums or containers. So be cautious when it comes to opening those up.
On a happy note, they told us of this story of a crate washing up in Canada, they opened it up to find a Harley Davidson motorcycle! It was then rebuilt/restored. The owner was found(serial number) in Japan and they surprised him with his bike..!

I couldn't find any similar children's toys on this Japanese site but interesting they do have an Obama action doll:

Even more bazar is this Japanese toy site that features a (very gross) pregnant doll:
