Toyota still heading downhill

805gregg - 6-17-2013 at 07:40 PM

Toyota has the dubious honor of having 3 cars on the Consumer Reports cars to avoid, #1 Scion iQ "this tiny car is super easy to park, and gets 34 mpg. But thats the only good news, It's slow and noisy, and has a buckboard ride" #4 Toyota Yaris " its 32 mpg gas mileage is good, but this sparten hatchback subjects you to a noisy cabin uncomfortable seat and a jittery ride" #5 Toyota Tacoma " this workhorse has a punchy engine thats great for hauling. But it feels dated and uncomfortable for everyday driving, with clumsy handling and rough ride". My sons 10 year old Corolla just got 2 more recalls, we have spent over $5000 in repairs in 130,000 miles, no more Jap crap for me

edm1 - 6-17-2013 at 09:48 PM

My daughter's 10 yo Corolla has over 150k miles, no repairs needed other than normal maintenance. Gets 34 mpg, compare it with new models. All recalls ignored. Don't fix if not broke, even if it's free.

David K - 6-18-2013 at 07:51 AM

My wife has an '08 Corolla, never a problem, gets 36 mpg highway and 26 mpg city. Over 75,000 miles on it.

I have a '10 Tacoma, never a problem, gets 18 mpg highway and 15 mpg city. Over 50,000 miles on it.

My previous two Tacomas both had over 100,000 miles in less than 5 years, and what few problems they had were not enough to consider changing brands. In Baja, they are incredible 4WD trucks.

Ateo - 6-18-2013 at 07:52 AM

I spent over $5000 in engine repairs on my Mercedes 240D, all within 2 years back in the early '80's and it was meticulously maintained---------. My next car, an Audi 5000 T, was a maintenance and repair nightmare. NO MORE GERMAN CRAP FOR ME

Bad stuff sometimes happens---------no matter who makes the vehicle. (but I have NEVER owned another German Veh. )

I now have had 3 "Jap vehicles" and I love them all and still have all 3. ('89 Isuzu Trooper, '97 Toyota Camry, 2007 Nissan X-terra)

You just never know----------------. :O

Udo - 6-18-2013 at 06:00 PM

Jap crap????

My PRIUS just went over the 490,000 miles.
I have had two recalls:
A steering knuckle, and a water pump. Both cost me zero and the dealer gave me a rental. Last year the factory issued a recall on the odometer control unit and they gave me a new one at no charge and gave a rental for three weeks. Now the odometer show a mileage of $8,000 miles.
I replaced the hybrid battery about a year ago...I bought one from a junk yard in Fontana, Ca. which cost me $500.00. The car had 32,000 miles on it from which I purchased the battery, so I had to take it to the dealer to sinch-up the two ECU's (the car has one and the battery also has one, and both have to register the same miles). So now I have a car that thinks it has about 20K miles. (except that the dealer instaled a new odometer module). I did also replace the 12V start battery and a heater control solenoid.
It burns about 4 oz. of oil between oil changes. I have always used 5-20 synthetic oil in the engine, and every tankful I put in two oz. of fuel additive.

Both of my FJ Cruisers have been outstanding off-road vehicles. With the upgraded suspension, I can easily drive 100 MPH (not KPH) on the road between Asuncịn and Punta Abreojos.

No one will EVER talk me out of a Jap car.

The only vehicle that ever came close to this car was a VW Rabbit diesel Cabrio. I traded the car in with 427,000 miles on it (the odometer went around 4 times). At the time, the Rabbit was getting 45 MPG on the diesel engine. And at the time, it was cheaper to drive to TJ to fill up on Diesel (18 U.S. cents per gallon), than it was to make a phone call. Diesel was selling for over a dollar per gallon in the U.S.

And may I ask you, what do you do to put on that kind of mileage. I drive 25000 miles for work each year but you got me beat. You've been to the moon and back plus some.

tripledigitken - 6-18-2013 at 06:34 PM

Udo,

Great track record in those two cars.
...

But almost a million miles in a prius and rabbit? Yikes!!!

grace59 - 6-19-2013 at 08:17 AM

What??? I absolutely love, love, love my Toyota FJ Cruiser! I bought it in 2008 and have nearly 80,000 on it with it needing just the normal maintanence!! I have driven it half a dozen times from Washington State to San Felipe in both winter and summer with no problems. It is great for the rainy, snowy winters of the northwest and the deserts of Mexico! I wouldn't trade it in for anything....except maybe a new FJ....I am missing that new car smell!

Baja4Rnr - 6-19-2013 at 04:17 PM

Crap? I've got 249,000 miles on my 2002 4Runner - have just done recommended maintenance, no repairs - even has original alternator. It uses less than 1/2 qt between oil changes and I get 21+ mpg on the highway.

Bwana_John - 6-19-2013 at 04:30 PM

I just gave my rode hard and put up wet Toyota 93 4wd Pickup with 220 k miles to my nephew in California.

The truck was not really maintained other than fluid changes and tires, new plugs, new plug wires once, and a timing belt or two.

I never did anything to the emissions system ever, no O2 sensor, no cat conv., nothing in 20 years.

The 20 year old truck passed California emission standards first time.

I bought a 90K miles 10 year old Toyota Tacoma to replace the 20 year old truck. ;)

David K - 6-19-2013 at 04:43 PM

Well, there is no doubt of the quality of Toyota 4WDs, and other vehicles... However, it isn't the only car company out there, so go ahead get another brand... I have owned a Jeep, Subarus (3), Mitsubishi, Mazda, Plymouth and Toyotas (3) and my parents have owned (that I recall): Fords, Jeeps, and a Chevy Suburban 4WD.

The Japanese brands I had/ have were all nearly flawless and excellent values. The American brands I owned were crap in quality (1975 Jeep and 1990 Plymouth). My parents had great luck with Fords and the first Jeep (1965), but bad luck with the second Jeep (1970) and the Chevy.

I cannot see ever owning anything but a Toyota product as the quality of mine, the wife's, and everyone I know who has Toyotas (a lot) is just great.

So, if you are car/ truck shopping... do you ask who has a Toyota about a Toyota or ask someone who doesn't... and spreads bad news about a brand they don't own?

(PS, I do not own stock in Toyota or get any form of payment for talking about Toyota)

Cars are a preference,:light: I just like and have had great success with Fords. I bought a Honda once and a got a flat the next day on my way to work.......hated that car after that. Porsche was great until the water pump went and it was going to cost $1500 to fix a $2500 car. Rolled the Jeep within 3 months. Newest toy is a '94 Bronco I just bought from the original owner with 86k miles, it is ready for Baja!

Udo - 6-20-2013 at 07:13 AM

My main job is as a hydraulic engineer, working for a company that has me put together deployment containers for the military, and I had to travel to military bases throughout the Southwest US. Plus I have many civilian companies that use hydraulics on their heavy equipment. I have the resources to find and repair or replace whatever hydraulic connector and adapter anyone needed.
I also provided hydraulic fitting identification seminars to the same people.

My part time job is as a chef and caterer. That entailed schlepping my cooking equipment from Morro Bay south to San Diego.

The rest will come out in my book once I am retired this year and I have time to write it

My '02 Yukon has a 5.3 liter V8 and weighs 8,600 lbs per an official scale. It has 269,000 miles on it and gets an average of 18.5 mpg on the highway. With the 3rd row seat removed and the back seats folded down I can haul 4x8 ft plywood and dry wall + up to 12' 2xs INSIDE. Can't do that with any jap vehicle.
Oh, I did have to put in a rebuilt tranny (6,000 pesos in Ensenada) and a used engine with 68,000 miles on it ($550 in Canada). Love that big hog.

Baja4Rnr - 6-20-2013 at 03:34 PM

"Only a tool"?? I think to many people a "car" (whatever they choose to drive) is more than just a tool otherwise we wouldn't need so many to choose from....to many people what they drive is an extension of themselves. If a car were just a tool why would so many people having that "mid-life crisis" go for something "exciting"? Cars can be dull or they can be exciting...just depends on the person's perspective. I think that my Toyota FJ "fits" my personality. And when I bought it...(The bright Voodoo Blue one) my friends all thought that it was the perfect rig to fit my personality, too! I love it and love driving it places...plus it just looks damn good no matter what environment I'm in!!

Thanks, Grace------we all DO look at things differently. For me, a "car" is only a means to get to somewhere I want to go with competance and efficiency, and the "excitement" is realized when I get there. But I do love to drive, and always have, but it is entirely because of what I can see outside my vehicle that "I love".

We are all different. (Thank Gaud!!!) :tumble:

Barry

Skipjack Joe - 6-21-2013 at 10:26 AM

I agree with Barry on this one. A car is just a vehicle to get you from point A to point B.

All these images of cars raised on 3 wheels at provocative angles with their undercarriage exposed seems like some sort of soft porn.

MMc - 6-21-2013 at 10:36 AM

I have often said "if it does not go 160 mph or have 4 wheel drive it's just transport." I drive a lot 35k + per year. The daily drivers are just part of the overhead. To think that what one drives is a reflection of ones self is novel. I laugh at a neighbor that has a MB and BWM who rents a house.:?:

TMW - 6-21-2013 at 03:00 PM

To many a vehicle is just a tool to get from point A to B. To others it shows their personality. To others it is an extension of themselves. It can have a different meaning to a truck driver, "Geddy Up Go". I remember when I lived in the mid-west where everyone on the hwy used CBs and many if not most of the handles reflected the vehicle, I was the Blue Ghost driving a blue van.

acadist - 6-21-2013 at 05:22 PM

BooJumMan - 6-22-2013 at 10:28 AM

Stop reading consumer reports for your source of information. Cars are of personal preference. You buy the car that ticks the boxes for what you're looking for in a vehicle.

While I can't argue that Toyota quality may be decreasing, among all other car manufacturers, they still stand behind their work, and will stand up to the plate with recalls, while other manufactures (especially domestics) will not admit to their mistakes.

I've owned Toyotas my entire life, I am a mechanical engineer, and an aerospace engineer by trade, and you definitely don't need that knowledge to see what good engineering is. They are able to maintain low cost with exceptional reliability. That right there is the most difficult thing to do. Engineering is the art of efficiency.

Anyways, like 99% of the people in this thread, most have had only good things to say about Toyota's.

I'm concerned with the comment about Jap Crap. Makes me think your just peeed about the money going outside the states, which is understandable. However, you must realize that most of the Toyota's that are aimed for the N. American market are indeed using US suppliers for parts, as well as assembly. Not exactly sure of exact numbers, but you could be sure that the total outsourcing isn't exactly much higher then that of Ford/Chevy and GM.

Whatever, If your unhappy with the Toyotas, don't buy them. See if your happier with a domestic. If you are that's great.
