Fireworks in Baja

Lee - 6-26-2013 at 12:54 PM

Bought some at a liquor store on the Malecon in Loreto once. They were like small bombs.

Are fireworks sold openly in La Paz or Cabo? Like where?

I (still) like explosions.

Outside La Paz:

Not sure why but the fireworks stores seem to be outside of La Paz proper. There are at least three stores on the Los Planes highway, Mx 286. The first one is across from the auto recycling yard, there are two more on the left about 3-5 miles up the hill. The signs say - "Cohetes".

Judging by the explosions/displays in the night skies - They sell some Big Boys......

SFandH - 6-26-2013 at 06:08 PM

While you're watching the bombs bursting in air think about the wild and domestic animals that are shaking with fear, domestic animals bolting and getting lost, losing their food and shelter, and their brokenhearted owners frantically searching for their best friends.

Skip the firecrackers.

I can't figure out what types of sexual repressions these explosives are addressing? Some kind of orgasm substitute, perhaps? :o

Let's ask Fulano :-)

I'll add that the dogs (and cats) can hear the fireworks miles away. Not good stuff trying to find your pet at night.......if you do. The firework sales trailer is outside of the city in San Felipe......perhaps they are located for safety reasons?

Leash up your animals asap when you hear fireworks..........

Count me in too. I can't figure out for the life of me why people want to stand around and watch these "small bombs" go boom. I personally know the turmoil it causes animals and it's not pretty.

Lee - 6-27-2013 at 07:36 AM

Relax people.

Don't think anyone thinks it's unPatriotic to shoot off fireworks. Or is that the case?

I'm talking holidays and special events on the beach in Pescadero.

Keep your dogs home at night.

DENNIS - 6-27-2013 at 07:45 AM

Ted Kaczynski started out just like this.....a little explosion here.....a bigger bomb there........:O

tiotomasbcs - 6-27-2013 at 08:42 AM

Lots of people have dogs out here on the beach in Pescadero. Not a good way to treat your neighbors. Retired fire-fighter? Military? Something with fire and explosions I guess. No entiendo? Tomas

DaliDali - 6-27-2013 at 09:03 AM

I am not a dog owner.

But I can certainly see the usefulness of scaring the sheet out of some of these NON confined, nocturnal garbage can browsers.

If you let your dogs roam on the streets at will.....I have zero sympathy from the effects of fireworks on them.

BAN THESE FIREWORKS!
then I say we go after the flippin emergency vehicles, what with their wailin sirens that leave poor fido with a splitting headache that lasts for minutes!
now we go after the locals with there clearly modified exhaust pipes that sound like a continuous string of firecrackers going off! almost as annoying to these pups as the many rich gringos with their lifted F450 diesels that send me running when they fire up these beasts!
now we go go after these careless mariachi's who prowl the streets at all hours what with their annoying drums and high pitched trumpets. Im pretty sure rover would bite em if he wasnt cowering behind a trash can trying to escape the painful tunes, the same trash can that some careless dog hater just threw away cooked chicken bones instead of first pulverizing to a fine powder then burying deep underground!
power to the pooch I say!

How about some perspective if you're up for it.

Fireworks in Sayulita for special events? Think Mexicans invented fireworks along with the Chinese.

DavidE - 6-27-2013 at 12:43 PM

Chamacos love to send up a skyrocket over your house and rattle the windows and crockery......at 3:00AM. I had a neighbor on the mainland who loved to do this. My response? I bought a used semi truck tire tube for 50 pesos at a llantera, paid a hundred pesos to have a balconeria fill it with acetylene gas.

Yeah you can guess the results. Probably equal to 3-4 sticks of dynamite. Used a 15-minute highway flare as a fuse. And no, no one got hurt. Some cracked windows but the jerk got the message. No one else likes him either.

Martyman - 6-27-2013 at 02:47 PM

I think what ticks people off about cahuetes is that they blow out their hearing aids.

DavidE - 6-27-2013 at 04:54 PM

Or sets fire to a palapa roof, terrifies small children (or disfigures their hands). "I like the loud sound" said Mojo a double-digit Neanderthal.

"Then find a drum, light an M-80 and stick your head in there when it goes off".

Fireworks on beaches and parks are fine. I enjoy them.

"But if I wanted to listen to your music, I'll climb into your car".

tiotomasbcs - 6-27-2013 at 05:11 PM

Perspectives?? Sayulita used to be Tranquila before it became a Tourist Trap! You have been there, Lee? In a 5Star Hotel, no doubt. East Cape? You really don't know the area. Thing is, you live/rent in an area that is still a quiet/tranquilo area. I really don't mind fireworks in an isolated area where no one lives but you don"T/ not here in Pescadero! I think you just like the argument. Remember, we remember your posts and prior opinions. R E S PE C T like Aretha sang. I have lived here for more than 10 yrs and own property. Keep it Cool. Tio

The local kids in town like to set off bombs made by putting muriatic acid and aluminum foil in a large plastic soda bottle. Traumatizes the hell out of the local dogs.

I think it has a foundation in our violent culture. Kids are taught at a young age that guns and bombs are cool.

Another question that lurks in my mind; why do some women want an equal share of combat responsibilities?
Now....that's scary.

Nice try but nope....

It's an American tradition that celebrates the independence from England.
You have the FREEDOM to partake, watch or not.
Choice is always a good thing.

absinvestor - 6-28-2013 at 10:28 AM

I agree with Tito. Personally I have dogs that are scared to death of the loud bang. They are not street dogs and explosions over a mile away get them trembling. There are many remote spots with few domestic animals to scare and no palapas to start on fire- why cause trouble with the neighbors- there are plenty of places to have "your fun" away from others who don't want to participate.

I'm thinking fireworks because the 4th is coming up. Anyone with a problem is most likely unAmerican, hates Mom's Apple Pie, and America.

I have a problem but certainly not "unAmerican". I change out the American flag at my company every 6 months due to wind damage and then very humbly hand the flag that's been replaced to a Marine who is so gracious as to dispose of properly. My problem is with wanting to set off "small bombs" and terrifying unsuspecting animals and a lot of humans.

You really don't get it, do you? I can guarantee you that those "freedom fighters" dreaded the sound. Please show some respect Mr Lee, not only for my country, but your neighbors and yourself as well. Have a safe Independence Day.

A person hears that sound from a distance and then it becomes increasingly louder, it's not like some fool just flipped a switch and blasted a few million decibels into the air, yes it's annoying but very unlike "small bombs" going off unexpectedly and terrifying animals, people and being intentionally disruptive to many senses.

Those sound trucks are most times the ONLY way to let the people know current events, weather warnings, official announcements or just the simple fact of advertising that the water man is coming.

Some of us live in these small towns where there is NO other choice to get the word out.
Let them be.

David K - 6-28-2013 at 03:13 PM

Fireworks (to me) are as much a daily or fiesta custom of society in Mexico as it is in the Orient... and as it is in the United States on Independence Day. They are a reminder that war and guns are how we freed ourselves from the colonial brutality.

I have lived next to Camp Pendleton for over a dozen years, and while the explosions during training exercises annoys some, it is the sound of freedom to me. Another thing, Camp Pendleton, like celebrating with fireworks, existed before I came to Oceanside... or anyone here on Nomad traveled to Mexico.

This also reminds me of how stupid it seems when someone buys a home next to an airport, and then complains about the sound of planes and wants it to end!

I can't ever recall your mention of time served in the military? How could you deprive yourself of all that founding-fathers bonding? Seems to me you would have made weaponry and explosives part of your career choice.

So can I get those rockets wrapped in newspaper that veer all over the place and have a tremendous explosion at any time after you light the fuse?

Being concerned about the effect explosives have on our pets isn't exactly Mexico bashing, but since you're so intent on accepting status quo and customs down here; how are you doing with decapitations?

monoloco - 6-29-2013 at 09:32 AM

The appropriateness of fireworks here, just like anywhere else on the planet is a question of location. It's one thing to set them off on a remote beach, but it's not appropriate to set them off in a residential neighborhood with kids, pets, and palapa roofs. I can tell you that a lot of the local Mexicans get annoyed by them also, around the 16th of September and New Years it gets a bit out hand in some areas, and I have had several friends lose their dogs due to the constant weeks long onslaught that begins early in the morning and goes until the wee hours. Just use some common sense.

You don't need to hold one of those to end up a mess Vandy, as stated in one of your earlier posts, those things "veer anywhere". No worries though, it's your digits that will end up missing, not mine.

You can put me down for zero Vandy, I lost interest in the 4th grade when I realized they were not only dangerous but very disrespectful as well.

If you guys recall the story about 'Inky', the lost Baja dog (adopted by Americans) we found in the desert between Cataviña and Mission Santa Maria (April, 2003)... we brought it to Camp Gecko after our trip to the mission where it would get a ride back to the U.S. with other dog owners (fishunter) and be re-united. While enjoying a thunderous skyrocket show put on by 4baja, Inky pulled free of the place we had her tied up to, at our camp... and we searched that night and the following days we were there, never to find her. Since finding her, Sarah had her leashed and loved... for a couple days of comfort...

In the background, Bedman and Emma's dog, Daisy at La Gringa.

Fireworks and animals do not do well together!

Like Teebagger partee. Remember our founding fathers were slaveholders. The world ain't perfect!

Fireworks are OK. A sudden blast at 0200 isn't. Nor is starting off at 0500 before they get truly drunk.

I found out 120db Mr. Tambourine Man by Dylan played across the arroyo is great payback at 0700 while they are in the midst of La Cruda.

Lee - 6-30-2013 at 08:54 AM

If I lived in a dense neighborhood, houses next to me, I wouldn't want everyone PO'd at me because I was lighting them up at midnight.

Where I live, I hear mariachi most nights, lots of cheering and celebration, fireworks (the big ones in the sky) regularly, and sometimes the ground shakes, windows rattle at an explosion. It is what it is. All this from Rancho Pescadero where well heeled guests pay $300-$500 night. If this isn't for you, you wouldn't live here. I shrug and think whatever.

When a close enough neighbor plays loud tejano music (I hate that sheesh) into the night, I think this is Mexico and there are NO noise ordinances here. Just the way it is.

Fireworks disrespectful? More NOB post-morality BS.

DavidE - 7-1-2013 at 09:45 AM

"Fireworks disrespectful? More NOB post-morality BS."

Señor Lee, IMHO is not "How And When Fireworks Are Utilized" not part of the determining factor of whether they are disrespectful? My Mexican neighbors have always thought so.

BTW cuetes and other pyrotechnics are purely regulated by pueblos, not the state. For example sales and use are banned in Tecate

baja-spirit - 7-1-2013 at 12:43 PM

Maybe the fireworks will scare the crap out of the dogs at their house and not do it on the beach in front of others people's homes. Dog owners love their dogs but walk them to crap on someone else space. Amazing to me...

Agreed. And, also, where utilized. Forget I wrote the above.

And, stop making sense.

Fireworks are OK. A sudden blast at 0200 isn't. Nor is starting off at 0500 before they get truly drunk.

I found out 120db Mr. Tambourine Man by Dylan played across the arroyo is great payback at 0700 while they are in the midst of La Cruda.

My favorite revenge music was GOOD MORNINE VIET NAM by Robin Williams played at full blast to get everyone up after a hard night of partying.
