Etymological Map

Check this out - a map with place names taken back to their etymological roots. Baja translates to "Lowland of the Successor" (scroll down towards the bottom). Mainland Mexico is "Navel of the Moon."

Interesting link... THANK YOU!

Really, the root of Baja California, is just 'California' (a mythical land from a popular novel in the 1500's).

There was no Baja or Alta in front of the name until after 1769 when the Franciscans began to establish missions north of the peninsula. Even then the peninsula was first renamed Antigua California, and Nueva California was all the land north of the peninsula. :light:

I thought of you when I posted this, David! I didn't actually buy one of these maps, but I'm guessing the names they provide would be from the names the original indians used to refer to Baja and Mexico. If you buy one I would be interested to know where they came up with Lowland of the Sucessor and Navel of the Moon. For all I know they could be just making this stuff up as they go along

Serious!

I found it interesting that 'Salt Lake City' had no different name. Are you aware of the web site maps putting historical Mormon sites in Baja? It is all very interesting no matter what your religious beliefs are: http://www.achoiceland.com/lands_map
