I'm On A quest To find The Filthiest Pemex Restrooms

Bajahowodd - 7-5-2013 at 05:02 PM

Not actually. I think I found a winner.

Decades ago, whether it was at Pemex or at the airports, one could always be certain that they would have to bring their own TP. Not to mention what was then, a universal lack of toilet seats.

That brings me to today, where so many of the newer Pemex station maintain well equipped, clean restrooms.

However, in my opinion, along the entirety of Mex 1, the most disgustingly awful award goes to the Pemex/ Mexmart in Colonet.

In all the trips I've taken over the years, this particular facility appears to win the prize.

Never, ever had paper products. Floors usually filthy. But, in a recent stop, not only were the chronic conditions present, but, there was zero water available, and one side of the stall wall was gone.

And the toilet was almost overflowing with "deposits" of all kind.

I talking about years here.

Not to mention that the MexMart is ill-stocked. Although there always seems to be a bunch of trucks parked there, the place appears depressed.

I'm assuming that this particular unit is an ejido franchisee, which may give Pemex some cause to force them to clean the place.

And before anyone asks, on our usual Southbound journey, this has become the "tipping point" for a potty break. I usually travel with two women. My wife and daughter, or my wife's best friend.

Anyone got any real contenders for the prize? This place is, and has been absolutely disgusting.

So, at least it would appear that Antonio is off the hook.

Years......and years ago, there were a couple of bars on Juarez/5th in Ensenada. These were working men only "clubs" and didn't even have bathrooms. No barstools either.
What they had was a really crude cement trough at the base of the bar with a trickle of water running through from one end to the other, and when nature called, you just stood there and did your thing.

Not recent but several years back we stopped for gas in El Cien when there was a Pemex there. My wife went to use the ladies room, standing in line for her turn. When she was up and entered the bano there was nothing but a hole in the floor where the toilet USED to be, she decided to take her chances along side the road.
That said when traveling to Baja Sur if a restroom had toilet paper, toilet seat, hand soap and paper towels we call it a Grand Slam....:lol::lol:
Things have improved a lot since those days
She still always carries paper with her when traveling in Mexico. :light:

Up until last year my vote would go to El Rosario Pemex but after their (18 month) remodel the new winner is Jesus Maria....

This thread is nothing but is nothing but a bunch of crap...

Sorry...

I would have to agree with you 100%... Disgusting!

Not a Pemex in Baja, but any station in the US operated by Pakistanis or Indians is a sure bet to be filthy. There was one in Oceanside that even charged 25c.

nbacc - 7-6-2013 at 07:34 AM

And...........they have a funny smell.

DaliDali - 7-6-2013 at 08:06 AM

Beats me why anyone would go on a quest to find a stinky bano.

vandenberg - 7-6-2013 at 08:50 AM

For many years the wife and I used the La Pintas as potty stops and , if the need arose in between, we used the roadside. Always, and still, carry plenty of TP. Nowadays we may stop at one of the newer Pemexes that have sprung up like mushrooms.
Getting like the old USA with a service station at every corner.
ALL PEMEX.

That goes for their motels also. Yuck!!!!

DavidE - 7-6-2013 at 09:59 AM

Latecomers don't remember this, but way back when, in a cantina, the sal de mesa (crude salt) on the bar top or table top was referred to as "Sal de Pito"

Campesinos would grind the crystals between thumb and forefinger into their tequila or mescal then sip. When they needed a restroom break they would wander over to a 5-gallon bucket. Wash hands? Jajajajajajajajajaja........

Then return to their seat reach into the salt dish and....

If you have a Mexican friend ask them about this

That's It!

Or close, anyway. What continues to baffle me is that the Colonet Pemex is always busy, despite the filthy conditions. And, I have to consider that the workers there also use those restrooms.

And, Vandenberg you have it right. There are a number of relatively easily accessed hotels along, or near the highway, that almost always offer a better alternative.

But, did I miss something? It had been my understanding that with the huge mushrooming of Pemex stations, that one of the requirements by Pemex was to maintain a certain standard.

Do you think the locals would complain to PEMEX??????........have you brought the conditions to the attention of the station in question, or did you contact PEMEX????? :?::?:

mulegemichael - 7-6-2013 at 08:23 PM

well, we've never found one pemex that we were comfortable in..."here, come on in, sit yerself down and relax with our atmosphere".......no...ain't happenin'....one of the worse was antonios in el rosario, another was in jesus maria up on the flats before guerrero negro...but the tamales made up for it....we usually pull off to the side of the road and experience our bliss without interference......bliss???...whaa?

I think this is a fun topic............

Los Pinos has pretty good pots, as do the first one on the left entering GN.

tripledigitken - 7-7-2013 at 12:52 PM

Why?

Leo - 7-7-2013 at 03:26 PM

Bubba, about that ingenuity, yes they can find solutions to a lot of things but when i am at a mexican bathroom at a gas station or campground, the left tap (hot water) never works. Still it's a funny picture.

Really?

As was mentioned further down the thread from my last post, the Los Pinos Pemex, at the Souht end of the San Quintin Valley has not only a great market, but their restrooms have electronic flush and faucets. Never found them to be lacking in paper products, either.

Bajahowodd - 7-7-2013 at 05:05 PM

On a similar note, since it was mentioned earlier in the thread, ( the hole in the floor), I just wondered if y'all realized that over half of the world uses what is called a squat toilet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squat_toilet

From Albania, Bulgaria, and through Turkey, and South and East, this is what you will encounter everywhere with the exception of world class hotels.

Whether you are in Ukraine, India, or wherever, this is it. The exception is major tourist facilities. For instance, at the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, every other stall is a regular toilet, versus the squat ones.

We were recently in Odessa, Ukraine, and visiting a historic cathedral. They had just completed building new restroom facilities. We walked in. Tile floors, granite countertops, electronic sensors for the faucets and towels, but the squat toilets were there in the stalls.

I asked a friend who grew up in Syria where he read magazines and newspapers. He told me, "on the toilet." Seems they developed the ability to squat for long periods of time. Go figure.

Not bad people...just not hygienic.

Hook - 7-8-2013 at 08:27 AM

I snapped a pic of our intrepid bano crew, as I was leaving a Pemex station in San Vicente. Even their camera looked like some kind of "black box" recorder. Or, in this case, an orange box.
