Hate Windows 8 ???

motoged - 7-7-2013 at 05:09 PM

My new laptop has Windows 8 on it. I am not yet in the touch screen world and don't like the W8 layout.

My tech friend told me to download (free) a program called Classic Shell that allows me to find my way around my laptop as The Creator intended (XP  ).

Just sayin'.

Bubba - 7-7-2013 at 05:12 PM

I am in the situation. Windows 8 is a nightmare, I've felt like throwing this new laptop out the window a few times.

David K - 7-7-2013 at 05:15 PM

Ditto! Baja Angel got a laptop and had Windows 8. We know XP well, not 8!

rts551 - 7-7-2013 at 05:32 PM

Have not tried windows 8 yet. but much of the controls in my truck are now touch screen. so are many smart phones. guess its the future. I Think XP was introduced in 2001 and replaced by Vista in 2007.

TMW - 7-7-2013 at 05:40 PM

Vista is a piece of sh$t, windows 7 mucho better. I read where microsoft had so many complants about windows 8 that a fix was out to convert much of it to the normal windows desk top setup.

Agreed.

KaceyJ - 7-7-2013 at 06:13 PM

MSFT sucks,

For 20 years they've come up with new windows but never perfected the current model.

Perception for sophistication has lead them to more and more problems when the need for simplicity is the answer.

I don't have windows 8 but on windows 7 I have made everything I can to run like XP in classic mode .

But now , most web sites are trying to keep up with the latest and greatest to their own demise and want you to run W8

SFandH - 7-7-2013 at 06:51 PM

When I bought my current Dell desktop in 2007 or so I had to PAY EXTRA TO DOWNGRADE from Vista to XP Pro. Glad I did. My next computer is going to be a Google Chromebook. MSFT is old school. Dinosaur.

BajaBlanca - 7-7-2013 at 07:08 PM

It took me a bit, but I actually like 8. but I am very different than most folk.

Ateo - 7-7-2013 at 07:17 PM

Oh sorry, let me be the first to say go Mac. JK!!!!!!!!!!!!!:lol::lol::lol:

N2Baja - 7-7-2013 at 11:23 PM

Thanks for the info on the classic shell, motoged. I absolutely hate windows8! Have you downloaded the program? and if so, did it to what it promised?

I seriously don't know why so many people put up with such junk. Nobody regrets switching to Mac.

Switched to a Mac in '02 and 3 Mac's later it's still LOVE. Got a MacBook Pro couple months ago -- there's still a mouse pad and scroll buttons -- but most maneuvering is done by swiping the pad with 1-2- or 3 fingers and a tap on the pad. Check it out at an Apple store -- you won't go back.

I think the reason is pretty obvious. Most people cant justify spending 50-100% more on a computer (and completely replace most of their software) that, when all is said and done, they will use 95% of the time for checking email, browsing the internet and playing some media. All tasks that dont require much computing power. So, they cant justify the Mac "advantage" compared to the price.

There is a significant percentage of Mac users that are agog about the STYLE of Mac, the COMRADERIE of owning a Mac, the perceived social superiority of owning the Mac BRAND, itself. Some of us just wont be taken in by those reasons.

Now, if we were talking smart phones, the Apple I-phones are clearly superior to most of the competition.

I'm still plugging along on an XP machine that has been very reliable. But I dont ask it to do much. Most people dont.

Good point Hook. I expect my computer to be able to do a lot without problems. That's why Mac is for me. I work with XP and Mac so I'm not just blowing smoke. I expect my computer to be able to rip DVD's and CD's, import and edit videos, music and photos and export to any format while NEVER crashing. I expect it to work right out of the box without being warned that I need to pay extra for virus protection. My Mac also runs XP as well as the grey box under my desk but I rarely use it because XP is a dinosaur and apparently upgrading does not improve the user experience.

Bajajorge - 7-8-2013 at 08:26 AM

I had Windows 7 with an early version of an Internet Explorer, I forget which number. I loved it, and everything worked to my liking. About 2 weeks ago during an automatic update session(in the middle of the night) I was force fed IE10. Now my laptop is a mess, and I can't figure out how to dump this IE10 that has caused me nothing but grief, and go back to my happy days. I did a restore back to the old days and things worked great again, but then every time I turn off the computer I get force fed IE10. Guess I'll just have to live with IE10, even though I think it's a major pain in the you know where.

Outside of editing videos, where Final Cut is clearly superior to all the options that were available to XP users (low end Avid stuff, Premier, Vegas, etc.) I've never had trouble doing all those other things with my XP laptop.

Video editing, especially if you are doing image creation, is a high end use. Macs are definitely the way to go, there.

I do probably need to restart my machine about once a month, when it fails to recognize a peripheral for some reason. But I did use Macs in the professional career and they needed restarting occasionally. But not as often as the XP/Vista/Win7 machines. It seems that Garmin software is starting to give me trouble.

I had to laugh when the outcry over the disappearance of the "START" button in Win 8 emerged. My reaction was, based on the OS following XP? Wouldn't a RESTART button be more handy?

Yes, and it leaves an icon on the screen that you hit once the 'puter is loaded up and ready to go....and it bypasses all those visual W8 tiles.

REAL simple....

desertcpl - 7-8-2013 at 10:09 AM

I also just got a laptop with windows 8 and I did put in the classic shell,,
but even then you have to deal with 8,,, I hate it

I think Steve Ballmer should be given the boot, or maybe he is secretly working for Apple
I am so fed up with windows in general, I am seriously considering switching to Apple,, I got a Iphone for Xmas and I love it.

meme - 7-8-2013 at 10:19 AM

Bajajorge I had the very same experience with IE 10. cannot seem to get away from it now either. It has caused m much grief also.

SFandH - 7-11-2013 at 11:15 AM

Microsoft plans to stop supporting XP in April 2014. No more updates or security patches. Worldwide, 40% of computers use XP.

http://www.informationweek.com/software/windows8/microsoft-p...

I use XP, I see no reason to change. Will my 7 year old Dells (netbook and desktop) run Windows 7? I don't know. I bet the netbook won't.

Screw Microsoft.

software changes, we all adapt,... it is pointless to complain about new software, it can't stay same forever (but i am sure there is some crumudgeon out there still complaining about change from DOS to windows :lol::lol::lol:)

Yellowtail_Fever - 7-11-2013 at 02:05 PM

If you really don't want to install IE 10 just go to windows update and right click on the IE 10 update and choose Hide. Done. It won't install it or offer it to you again.

I supported XP and currently support win7 on about 450 systems...some now virtual through MS MultiPoint Server.

I appreciate the headaches you are going through with win8. I checked it out a little bit last year and gave up. However, I do have it on a system at home and I very much look forward to the 8.1 update. I think it will address most of the issues you are having. As with you, I mostly just have a hard time finding stuff (especially admin tools). That will come in time. The transition to universal interface (desktop, phone, tablet, laptop, game console, mall kiosk...)is not one that we all voted for, but over time you will start to appreciate it. Those of us that have Xbox Live have been using the win8 interface for almost 3 years now. What we didn't have to deal with on the xbox was all kinds of periphials and third party software to configure.

In this case, change it hard...I'm resisting too...but I know I'll be assimilated as well.

I need to go fishing.

motoged - 7-11-2013 at 02:06 PM

Yep, it seems that Chromebook is the OS that is on different brands....mostly promoted as an improvement on a tablet for light internet use and NOT to be considered as a full capacity program one would find with other OS's.

But I am a Luddite, so others will correct me.

mtnpop - 7-11-2013 at 02:11 PM

My computer guru in the east recently told me to steer clear of windows 8 as it was mainly designed for the netbooks...
Does not work well on most laptops and that he is using google chrome also..
Now I would like to be back to BAJA and out of crazyland in the north..
Another new wildfire in colorado this week.

This reminds me of an experience with a computer nerd in the late eighties....

"Look!" he cried "What the computer can do!"

Clickety, clack-clack-clack

Mouse click click

More clack clack clack

Then

"Wait! You'll see"

Click-click-click

He spoke triumphantly into his telephone.

"It dialed the number for me!"

"Yeah, but Pete, had you just picked up the phone and dialed, you would have been finished 5 minutes ago"

Black Death Stare

No, you're correct. If you want to run complicated software or burn CDs/DVDs, ChromeOS is not for you.......yet. It's all pretty new stuff.

Did you all see this comment from a reader below the article in InformationWeek?

JohnM587
I am an IT consultant and have many Corporate Customers who have told me they just cannot afford the huge cost of upgrading their Windows XP which still works just fine to Windows 7 or 8
So I found a perfect solution for them before Windows XP expires. It is a new commercially available Linux operating system that runs all Windows applications and programs sandboxed inside Linux, making XP and also Windows 7 100% immune to all viruses and malware, requiring no future security updates or any anti virus anti malware software. They do this by saving all windows data to drive e which is the Linux partition and they have a one click Windows VM restore so it impossible to get a virus or malware.
It is so economical and bulletproof that I have already successfully deployed hundreds of these installs in the last 3months alone.
This 3D operating system called Robolinux installs an XP 32 or 64 bit VM in just one click Then you load your licensed XP disk into the VM, but that was easy for my Customers to do.
Check out Robolinux if you cannot afford to upgrade.

Wonder if that is legit?

I installed Classic Shell months ago, just after I updated to 8. It is one of the best free programs I have ever used. I boot right in to the desktop bypassing the Metro screen all together. I love windows 8, especially the automatic backup feature (file history) running all the time in the background, it has saved me.

I loaded 8.1 on my test desktop and they did put an icon down where the old Windows 7 button use to be and that will help. I am going to test Classic Shell with 8.1 tomorrow.

So true. Hardware gets faster, then new operating systems come out and the programmers take full advantage of the new capabilities, of the hardware like motion, color, sound, and all. Then everyone with XP wonder why there computers run so slow and won't run some of the new stuff as you said.
