Lodging in Bahia Asuncion late October

cbuzzetti - 7-15-2013 at 07:10 PM

We are 3 couples with small boats looking for lodging in Bahia Asucion and Abreojos in late october. Our dates are somewhat flexible as we will be in the area from the 23-28.
We have rented a small house by the camp ground a few years ago but would need something bigger this time.
Can anyone fill me in on whats available?

Thanks,

Bajabuzz

You will most likely hear from Shari (of Juan and Shari fame) soon!! Wonderful people !!!!

Udo - 7-15-2013 at 07:44 PM

If you wish to stay at least two weeks, our place is available. Check under Casa Winkler under Nomad rentals. We are renaming it THE FLIP FLOP SHACK.
This is a really deluxe two bedroom house. All you need to bring are your rods, clothes and your favorite coffee. The posted photos do not do justice to the house...the place is a beachfront marvel.
Everything else is provided

Yes, your place is great -- I thought you were looking for at least one month! As you know, we have recommended it to others. How many beds do you have --- good to know how many you can accommodate.

Thank you for all the fast responses. We will only be there for 3-5 days so a long term rental wont work for us.

With a bed in that second bedroom, you will be able to have three couples with no problem -- and there is the futon in the guest room that is also good for MORE people. Two bathrooms is really a plus. Dang, maybe we should not have sold the place.

We really want our former home to be a real success and hope that you will enjoy it as much as we did.

I might also mention that the hotel in town, Hotel Verduzco will do everything to accommodate you and help you. It is a basic Baja hotel, clean and nice. Victor Verduzco who runs the hotel will do everything to make a stay good, tell you where all the good fishing spots are, and one of his sister's has a restaurant across the street that is good.

Most, but not all of the fishing guides in Asuncion share information freely.

as you can see there are lots of options. If you want beautiful ocean front accommodations, we have lovely rooms with queen beds and each has it's own bathroom & shower here at La Bufadora Inn with plenty of room to park your boats. Each couple could have their own unique rooms or 2 couples can share the new 2nd floor suite. The ladies will love being pampered...they can swim in the natural pool or at the beach below and watch the blowhole from their room's patio.

Meals can be arranged or you can eat at any of the village restaurants or have dinner catered...it will be lobster season and Juan's sister serves a fantastic lobster dinner! There are also cooking facilities in some rooms and a BBQ...great place...great personal service....not to mention killer sunsets!!!

Here are a few pics...

If you want to stay in the Punta Abreojos/ La Bocana area, Blanca's La Bocana Bed and Breakfast is by far the nicest accommodations in both towns. I have stayed twice and loved it.

Campo Rene is pretty rustic, but the setting is amazing. Chelo's is basic but decent. There are very few other options.

Bien Viaje!

Thanks Curt!

Shari - those photos tell it all! so breathtakingly beautiful.

At this time, Diana, I feel that two weeks is a minimum stay requirement. It is just too much trouble and pricey to clean the place twice. Once before someone arrives and the second time after they leave. If the renters wish to get the house cleaned in between, that's on their own hire.
When we come down next month, I need to catalog all the belongings, and videos to make sure renters don't walk off with anything.
We are also changing the locks to codekey system, where a number can only be entered once and the code goes away. Plus I am installing 2" long class one commercial deadbolts.

rethink

You may want to rethink being an absentee landlord? Have you had experience renting properties before?

even though the flip flop shack will be an impenetrable fortress after those new deadbolts are installed, I'd wait for something to come up with a 24 hour armed guard. after all, it is asuncion!

805gregg - 7-16-2013 at 05:48 PM

Head down to San Carlos so you can be where the fish are, I helped deliver a boat from Channel Islands to cabo we caught the most fish off Mag bay, it was cold in Bahia Asuncion and that was July, after 45 min we headed over to Punta Chivato to warm up

What about the razor wire?

Udo - 7-17-2013 at 12:15 PM

Here is why deadbolts...

When we went to BA late June/July, we found the keys to everything except the back door to access the garage.
One of Shari's friends was there to help welcome us home.

I could not find the garage door key(s), so the friend showed us how easy it was to enter a locked door and open it.
HE HAD IT OPEN IN 5 seconds flat, and we were in the garage!
I am sure that can happen to anyone anywhere.

I'm not taking chances, even though this is BA we are talking about...one of BAJA's safest cities.
I have a couple of neighbors watching the place from their front window.

When we first bought our home in BA we were wrongly advised that we really needed to install bars on the windows. Not really knowing the community, we proceeded to install the bars only to later pay to have most of them removed.

Udo, the deadbolt on the garage door is maybe not a bad idea as we have seen that door blown open by the wind --- so the bolt may keep it closed.

shari - 7-17-2013 at 08:37 PM

when Diane bought their house, it was the only one out in that area and one of the very first expat houses...so the locals thought bars were a good idea at the time...mostly I think because they didnt want to risk someone breaking in and giving Asuncion a bad rap...the only other house in that area (also unattended) got completely cleaned out...the ratas brought a truck in...nobody saw a thing.

There are small crime sprees once in awhile, usually resulting from a random drug problem and an uninhabited gringo house would be a prime target. Sometimes families from other parts of Baja will send their "bad apples" to stay with relatives in the boonies hoping to calm the guy down and remove him from the bad elements in the city...those guys often can be tempted to steal.

Asuncion is extremely safe...but all it takes is someone from the "outside" who is knowledgeable on B&E and it would be easy pickins because everyone is so slack with security. But unless your place is a well secured fortress, a thief will get in pretty easily if you dont have bars and deadbolts.

It's always good to have someone in charge of checking on your places.

BajaBlanca - 7-18-2013 at 08:55 AM

The locals watching your property is the Best Bet. A neighborhood watch is the way to go. And that is true for anywheresville.

Looks like Asuncion has tons of options for rentals now!

[Edited on 7-18-2013 by BajaBlanca]

BajaLuna - 7-18-2013 at 09:24 AM

The reality is...no matter how much security you have in any house anywhere in the world if thieves want in they will get in just take a look at your own neighborhoods in the U.S. at crime mapping dot com, it's pretty disturbing what's going on around us. Drugs are the culprit everywhere, sad but true. And unless we deal with the crux of the problem which is addiction and/or poverty things won't change anytime soon! However, it's a good idea I think to deter them as much as one can. Good security systems are a good thing! Bahia Asuncion is a beautiful town and has a good vibe, and I feel totally secure there. But I think it's a good idea to make a house as secure as you can anywhere you live, if nothing but to make one feel they have done everything they can and removing that fear factor, that's really all one can do, put systems in place and hope for the best! Or one could always get a couple of Gargoyles to guard their place! Ancient security system!

BajaLuna - 7-18-2013 at 09:26 AM

absolutely Blanca, community working together! .

Yes, if someone wants in, they will get in and when you get to know the locals and develop mutual trust and respect, they all keep an eye on things for you. Many locals couldn't believe we put the bars on --- it was almost insulting to them. We were sure happy to get rid of them, as was the person who removed them as we gave him all the metal as a tip.

Speaking of locks, I am sure I mentioned in our communication that the salty wind is murder on the locks and they need constant attention.

Udo - 7-18-2013 at 03:39 PM

Thanks, Diana.
I had a suspicion that the door might have come open before.

The large garage doors have large slide bolts on both the top and bottom, but the small entry door has a small deadbolt now, but it is pretty corroded, and there appears to be no key for it. Therefore it is being replaced with a stainless steel one that is keyed the same as the back garage door. The house doors will have a different key altogether.

Additionally, the door edges will be sealed with a 3/8" to 3/4" tick round foam insulating barrier to keep most of the dust from entering the garage.

I have a friend with a place in BoLA....his home was broken into by the family hired to do some of the work on his place....they had their 8 year old crawl through a small window that had no bars....TV and tools stolen...

That can happen anywhere, so the steps taken to reduce risk of theft for absent folks (or even at home) are sensible.

redmesa - 7-18-2013 at 04:14 PM

There will be more damage from renters (usually inadvertently) than from local break-ins. I have been renting out places for many years and I never have anything of personal or monetary value in the rentals. All that stuff goes in a locked closet or shed.
