Huahuatay. Other side of the toll road from the middle of Rosarito, in the hills.
A Baja rodeo from a collection of villages, is a poem or song narrating a cultural story, moment by moment.
Fifty pesos, Tecate, families, extended families, Mexican food - catered by families, starts later than
published and nobody cares. Laughter and music. Lots of it. Last place finishers get as many slaps on the back as first finishers.
Everybody is friendly.
An extended community, Ensenada to Tijuana and Mexicali . . . all are presented by name to the crowd, along with a prayer.
The youngest rider has her own entry presentation.
Bull riding is popular. These kids start young. Today a 15 year old will ride.
Made of rubber. Rubber with memory. Reminders, in later years.
The kid did good.
If you're the only white guy in the stands, expect a warm welcome from the announcer.
Individual horses and tack are given hours of preparation for events.
The weather is cool with occasional light drizzle, of the monsoonal flow.
A great event is our own Pamplona style running of the bull. Twelve volunteers were coaxed out of the audience by the announcer. What a hoot.
The announcer later asked why I had not volunteered. I explained I didn't know what they were going to do.
If I make the jump out of the stands to the arena floor, next chance I'll do it.
Events continued with this doll opening the barrel racing.
Gonna rock at 16.
More Babies . . .
One measure poodle, 3 measures black lab, my wife's 3 month old "Lily".
First rodeo.
Best part? I met vaqueros to ride with soon!

Great photos Jeff! When do they hold the rodeo?

So far, it has been luck of announcements along the road. I hope to hook up with a schedule along the way. The previous week we found a mini event
associated with the circus. I was sorry I didn't bring my camera.

We have to been to the rodeo in La Mission a few times although it's been awhile. The first time we showed up at the appointed hour and thought we had
the date wrong because there was no one else around. After about an hour folks started filing in and a great time was had by all. Good times.

Wonderful photo series. No too outback, though. Looks as good as the pro rodeo show that starts in my home town next weekend. Thanks for posting!

Exactly windgrrl - big bang for a quaint small venue.
Where's the home town rodeo going to be?
