Russ had a car accident

Pescador - 8-2-2013 at 07:01 AM

Russ, who posts all the great pictures from Punta Chivato had a car accident while going north to California. I do not have all the details, but evidently he went off the road around Punta Prieta and rolled the SUV several times. The police officer gave him and his trusty companion Mason (chocolate Lab) a ride to Guerrero where the police officers wife took care of the dog and Russ went to the hospital. A few broken ribs and he is really sore but the dog is ok.
He got a ride from another Chivato resident and is now at his sisters house in Laguna Beach.

Ateo - 8-2-2013 at 07:12 AM

I'm glad to hear he's alive and out of the hospital. Get well Russ!!

bajajudy - 8-2-2013 at 07:16 AM

Feel better soon!

Meany - 8-2-2013 at 07:19 AM

To all Russ Fans. He is doing much better. He went to the VA Hospital yesterday. He has 6 broken ribs and they are keeping him in the Hospital. If I hear more I will post.

DianaT - 8-2-2013 at 07:28 AM

Six broken ribs? OUCH. Really sorry to hear about the accident, but happy he and Mason are alive!

And the bright light is that the policeman's wife took care of Mason --- nice part of the story.

Rest, and rest some more, get well.

BajaBlanca - 8-2-2013 at 07:39 AM

Russ!!! Did you not have your seatbelt on buddy or did you break your ribs even with it?

Get better fast!

Thanks Pescador for letting us know.

Anyone coming down?

Mulegena - 8-2-2013 at 07:41 AM

I can take care of Mason here in Mulege 'till he comes back.

If we can get coordinated with Russ on this plus the caregivers in Punta Prieta, someone heading south may bring Mason to Mulege.

So sorry, Russ. Ouch! Ribs hurt like a big dog!

DENNIS - 8-2-2013 at 07:52 AM

Let us know if Russ needs anything.....money...beer....anything.

desertcpl - 8-2-2013 at 07:58 AM

I busted some ribs many years ago,, and its just miserable

Pescador - 8-2-2013 at 08:08 AM

Get well soon Russ. Those rib injuries are painful! Considering the worst case scenario, you got lucky, Mason too.

Let me know if you need anything while in So Cal.

Please do. I've spoken with the VA, and they say he's not there.

Thank you!

The VA, in some cases, has a bad habit of categorizing patients by their SS number.
You should, however, be able to find him by name.......one would think.

BajaNomad - 8-2-2013 at 01:56 PM

Perhaps I assumed incorrectly. Re-reading the info here, perhaps he's at another VA facility than the one I first assumed - in San Diego. I also called Long Beach - but they're reporting he's not there either.

So, he's either in another facility, been released, or has privacy requested that keeps his info off the main records the operators look at.

DENNIS - 8-2-2013 at 02:22 PM

Has anyone mentioned how he went north from the accident? If he proceeded on an emergency basis, sirens blasting, he would have been transferred to US Paramedics at the border. Perhaps they took him to Sharps [the closest, I believe, in Chula Vista] or Kaiser.

BajaNomad - 8-2-2013 at 02:34 PM

The OP said he was already in Laguna Beach with family.

A later post (perhaps earlier info?) indicated he would have a stay at the VA hospital.

wessongroup - 8-2-2013 at 02:39 PM

The place is "fine" ... :):)

Take it easy and recover ...

Wouldn't have my dogs in the truck without one. Can't believe anyone else would either. Pickle prolly would have stayed in the car had she been buckled.

Russ, glad you both made it to socal. Check in when you can.

It wasn't that long ago that Tecate police were pushing mordida for not having your dog in a seat belt inside the vehicle.
I hope they aren't reading this. :o

Bajahowodd - 8-2-2013 at 05:00 PM

I echo all who have wished Russ a speedy recovery.

Russ - 8-2-2013 at 05:03 PM

Thank you all for your best wishes!
Just got up from a siesta. Spent yesterday in Long Beach VA hospital then transferred to UCI urgent care until 4 this morning. There was some worry about a punctured lung but not. Yes there is a lot of pain but I'm lucky and will have to get another car to return home. Steve/Meany saved the day and got me to my sisters in Laguna asap. It was thought I only had one broken rib but after the C Scan the found 6.
A few people stopped to help me and they were great to stick around until the local cop showed up and took me to the Geurro Negro Hospital. I can't say enough bad things about that hospital and their staff. 3 hours of no meds or help. But everyone else I made contact went out of their way to help. The staff and owner at the Caricol hotel went the extra mile for me. When I couldn't get out of bed in the morning the owner got a doctor to come out with all the right stuff so the trip north from there was comfortable. Thanks to all. No! I'll heal up, get another car and head home in a few weeks.

bajadogs - 8-2-2013 at 05:10 PM

Dang Russ!!! Rib injuries are painful but you are one lucky dude. I'm very glad you will be recovering soon.

What Monet forgot...

Mulegena - 8-2-2013 at 05:11 PM

The completion of a masterpiece, Monet's Waterlilies, and we didn't even know until right now.

Well done, Big Oly.

DianaT - 8-2-2013 at 05:30 PM

Russ, that is one ugly car! Can't believe you and Mason are OK --- well, except for the major pain you are suffering. Thank goodness you didn't puncture a lung! Is Mason hurting? You will heal and head back home sooner than later and there will be a lot more sunrises.

Our experience with the hospital in Guerrero Negro was not very good. It is good to know that others were so quick to help.

And off topic --- BigOly, that photo is a prize winner without question. It is beautiful and one's eyes are drawn quickly to the look between mom and the one chick. It has major personality!

DocRey - 8-2-2013 at 06:11 PM

Get well Russ. With 6 fx ribs you may feel a tendancy to not want to take deep breaths or move around much. You may want to just stay in bed. I don't know your age but pneumonia & older people are an especially bad combination. Move around with what your comfortable with, but move around. No, I'm not really a doctor. Just an old Navy corpsman whose's seen a little. Take care.

KaceyJ - 8-2-2013 at 06:49 PM

Wow ,

Just looked at the pics of your car Russ,

Were you pre-running or what ,?????:bounce::bounce::bounce:

What happened???

Get better!

BajaBlanca - 8-2-2013 at 07:43 PM

your car is a mess ! thanks goodness you are OK

I have never been to the hospital in GN but I have indeed heard horror stories ...

J.P. - 8-2-2013 at 08:17 PM

Looks like a old Ford Explorer, those things didn't have a real good track record when it came to roll overs. You are one lucky person.

bigjohn - 8-2-2013 at 08:48 PM

My biggest problem when I had broken four ribs was getting out of bed. You never realize how much core strength you have until broken ribs keeps you from having any. My solution was to rent a hospital bed for a few weeks. It will crank me up to the sitting position (almost) and from there I could spin on my behind and get out of bed.

Russ, if you need a source here in South Orange County I can point you in the right direction. Try not to laugh as it only hurts more....! :D

jbcoug - 8-2-2013 at 08:58 PM

Russ, Wishing you a speedy recovery. Will miss your pictures in the meantime. Hope you look better than your car.

Wishing you a fast recovery Russ.
Looking forward to pics of your nurses.
When you return, just holler if you need anything.

Meany - 8-3-2013 at 07:23 AM

A small correction to Russ's Post. .....he was a little bit "out of it" and it must have affected his memory. He did stay at Caracols Hotel and they were great to him., but I picked him up there and that night we stayed at Jardines. It was there that in the morning he could not move at all. I was very scared that he might have had internal bleeding or something even worse than a broken rib. It was Guillermo and Carmen from Jardines that were able to get us a Doc who gave him a shot that made it possible to get him in my truck. Im very sorry that I don't remember the Doctors name, but he was great. My thanks goes out the staff at jardines Hotel and i want them to get the credit they deserve for going out of their way to help us. Plus Mason was a great trooper and unbeliveable dog to travel with. He didnt seem to suffer any injuries from the accident. Russ mentioned that after the accident several very kind people stopped and helped him. It just shows that there are alot of kind people out there.

Not surprising that Guillermo and Carmen helped out --- great people and they do hire a very good staff. It is a good thing to let people know.

I am just so surprised that Mason did not suffer any injuries. He must be one tough dog.

Udo - 8-3-2013 at 07:38 AM

Speedy recovery, Russ!

As JP stated, the Explorers don't have good track record on roll-overs. Ford got sued over their roll-over prone vehicle and lost.

acadist - 8-3-2013 at 09:22 AM

Speedy recovery!

Russ - 8-3-2013 at 10:04 AM

Steve/Meany, thanks for getting things right for me. Getting out of bed is definitely the hardest part of this "Baja Adventure" but I can do it and it certainly reminds me how fortunate I am.
Thanks again for all tour best wishes and thoughts

Update:
Feeling a little better each day. Drugs are great:o
I'm getting around well without too much pain. Getting out of bed still the most painful thing but have worked out a rope trick that straightens me out before I slide out. Hope to be home in two weeks.

Mason never got a scratch so he's a happy guy. Weather in Laguna is June Gloom so we're both cool. I'm healing and off pain meds... mostly. Got a replacement car so I'm ready to get home. One more doc visit.
