For those living just South of the border, what is the best US Post office to rent a PO box, considering proximity to the Otay Mesa crossing and ease of access?

There is a UPS mailbox rental store on Telegraph Road, just east of the 805:

Given the relative low cost of USPO boxes, they're sometimes hard to find.
The alternative is a private company, such as Postal Annex...UPS.....Mail Boxes Etc.
The up side of that is they offer a street address. Many companies won't ship to a US PO box, but will to a street address.

There are probably an abundance of these places on the US side of Otay.

It's better to have a PMB even though they cost more. You have an actual street address, can have your mail held without a problem, and will never have a problem getting packages shipped to you.

I've had them for years, and prefer them over a POB from the USPS. Even though I'm moving to TJ, I'm going to keep my PMB in San Diego (Normal Heights).

San Ysidro may be more convenient for walking over, Sue. There are lots of mail places in SY.

It would seem that the private enterprise po box businesses are in favor here.
Does anyone have a specific po box service that has worked well for them in San Yisidro? I would prefer to take the advice of long time residents rather than learn by trial and error.

I use Postal Annex. There may be two of them in SY........other services as well.

I'll be crossing the border at least twice a week on foot, and the same by driving to work and going out, so it doesn't make sense for me to change it, and I have no interest in changing it. I had one in downtown SD for eight years, and they lost their lease, but I was going to change it anyway.

It's not inconvenient for me to go there, and I can easily take the trolley downtown, then the #11 bus to pick up my mail and run other errands. I get a lot of packages and they're held at no charge for me, whereas other places get upset if you don't pick your mail up all the time, and charge for holding packages.

I pay $78 per year for my PMB, and I'm sure it's less than anywhere in SY, or in SD for that matter.

The UPS store on Telegraph is close to Otay, COSTCO and Otay Ranch shopping area, (Von's; Trader Joe's; Target; Wal-Mart; Lowe's: Home Depot and others)

Thanks to everyone who took the time and effort to reply to this important question. The UPS store on Telegraph gets glowing reviews. I am just hoping for a program to hold mail for a lengthy period when I don't get around to picking it up. I need a mailing address more than I need mail as I have gone paperless on as many accounts as possible.

The USPS won't hold your mail for an extended length of time unless you put a hold on it. But a mailbox store will. I normally pick mine up twice a week, but sometimes get busy and only go once per week. Either way, my box is always full, and I have packages waiting for me. They'll know you as a regular customer, whereas the USPS won't.

well...that's just NOT true...

if you have a POBox your mail sits there...
you MAY have to come in during business hours
AND the office MAY try to "upgrade" you to a bigger box
but it will ALL be there

an address "vacation hold" is good for 30 days
and if you let the mail "build up" it'll get sent back

you HAVE to remember the "mailpiece" belongs to the mailer NOT you UNTIL you pick it up

POBoxes have different rules than "physical addresses"

I used to have regular USPS PO boxes. They would get upset when I only picked up my mail once per week, and I would find little "notes" in my box that all my mail was going to be sent back if I didn't pick it up more than once per week.

If you put your mail on 30 day vacation hold, you'll have to put another hold on it when you pick it up.

With a physical address at a mailbox store, you can call them and they'll tell you how much mail you have, what it is, and if you have any packages. The USPS doesn't do that.

I talked to Jasmine at the UPS store. They really appear to care about their business. Most others are erecting roadblocks to keep me from opening an account. Thanks again to the forum members who recommended this outlet.

She will take care of your mail. At my place (The Box Stop, Etc.,) Norman takes care of my mail. He doesn't send me emails of package acceptances, but just holds them for me until I eventually show up.
