From a postcard dated 1906

Ensenada, Bahia de Todos Santos

"Kid Blackie's Place"

mcfez - 8-6-2013 at 12:30 PM

That's a great find. Can you imagine hauling those 55 gallon drums to the coast on a dirt road? (located on the building shipping door) Wow.

I notice that power poles or perhaps telegraph /phone?

Thanks for posting this...I just love these vintage pictures

Good eye, Deno. Must be a generator feeding the pier.

Also, in the background, looks like the Riviera is there. I didn't know it was here that early. [how do we know this was 1906? I don't see a date.]

willardguy - 8-6-2013 at 02:04 PM

I often find myself wandering around the riviera, looking at the historical photos of the building of the then hotel del playa, in the south end by the bar(who swears they invented the margarita) not the museum side.
what always trips me out is it sat right on the beach, today its a fair walk before you hit water. I thought the oceans were supposed to be rising:?:
btw, the riviera is a great bathroom stop if need be!

San Nicholas?

dirtbikr - 8-6-2013 at 03:33 PM

Is that the San Nicholas Hotel? Looks like it.

No. It's the Riviera.........maybe a half century before the San Nicolas was built.

BajaBlanca - 8-6-2013 at 04:02 PM

The first post says it is a postcard dated 1906.

Very interesting picture!

More Please..and thanks

bajacalifornian - 8-6-2013 at 04:19 PM

Dennis . . . a buddy has the postcard at Campo Lopez. The card is dated 1906.

I commented Kid Blackie's place. That is said to be Jack Dempsey no? I do not know that history.

David K - 8-6-2013 at 04:26 PM

It is sure nice to see more (Baja) history! :light::biggrin:

Jack Dempsy is associated with the Riv, but in name only. He may have made appearances, but he was only there for his name.
I have to research this, but I thought the Riv was a product of Prohibition. I didn't realize it was there as far back as 1906.

Never heard the "Kid Blackie" reference. Lots to learn here.

Spend some time on the Baja Historic Interests forum here on Nomad, many old photos there... Here are some posted by mcfez: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=66803

bajacalifornian - 8-6-2013 at 07:33 PM

My buddy at Campo Lopez has been there for 30 years. He is a history buff. Therefore, he has this great image.
Luck of the find.

Again you are correct Dennis, that image is NOT from 1906 simply because the hotel Playa Ensenada was not even thought of until 1926 and yes, because of prohibition was built, but unfortunately came late in the game as it opened it's doors after the prohibition was lifted, 1930.
And yes, Jack Dempsey was not even an investor in this project.
There are artifacts housed there that are from the original construction that date back even to the 1700's and were imported from places like Cuba and others and were used to build and decorate the property.
But the image being from 1906 is just not correct. Maybe the numbers (on the back of the post card or whatever ) are blurred and looks like 1906 but could be 1936. Don't know for sure but for sure the
Ensenada Historical Society must have a copy of the same image or it has similar ones of the same era.

Isn't that Woody waxing up his board on the beach?
another secret spot gone awry....

Thanks Ferna. Here's a foto of the hotel in 1930 before the opening:

In the lower right you can see same 2 buildings in this circa 1892 picture.

here is an interesting article: http://www.sandiegohistory.org/journal/84winter/ensenada.htm

mcfez - 8-7-2013 at 01:45 PM

This new photo may help to determine stuff. Please note the building at the far right

Yes Dennis...........the 55 gallon drums I pointed out...you must be right. I bet this was the main power house for the entire area.

3 drums in front of a small building without a stack does not look like an elec plant for town on 1k or 2k people. In the late 1800s and early 1900s so cal and Baja were using heavy oil for electric plants and feed stock for manufactured gas. Perhaps some minimally refined oils were burned in elec plants. For a bit of the late 1800s coal was used, but coal use stopped after oil began being mass produced in LA.

If you like Baja historical pics, spend some time on the san diego hist soc website. If you really like hist pics, visit the soc in balboa park, they got great photo archives, the material on line is but a fraction of their collection. Perhaps there are similar archives in Baja??

willardguy - 8-7-2013 at 09:29 PM

still, if the original photo was taken in 1906, how does it clearly show the hotel del pacifica (riviera) that was built in the late 20's? an early example of primitive photoshopping?

The generator for the pier was merely a suggestion based on the inaccurate assumption that the year was 1906.
Your point, however, is well taken.
All other points you have made, or will make in the future, are awaiting critical consideration.
Thank you for your contribution.:lol::lol:
