Can anyone recommend a good grocery store in San Ignacio? I have seen lots of small tiendas on the highway but was wondering if there's something
more substantial in town close to the plaza.Mulegena - 8-12-2013 at 02:25 PM
I believe the best bet for groceries is the big grocery store out on the highway next to the Pemex across from the entrance to town.
As far as markets in the towns of Baja, this market is pretty big and comprehensive in their offerings.SFandH - 8-12-2013 at 02:28 PM
And there is always a guy outside the store selling bags of dates. Love those sticky things.bajajudy - 8-12-2013 at 02:30 PM
There is a new store in town that has costco products.
It is on the loop around town....go past the mission(do not turn) and continue until you see it.DavidE - 8-12-2013 at 02:33 PM
It's not a real short drive but Mercado Sotres in Vizcaino is three times as deep as it is wide and they have an impressive array of foodstuffs
including cottage cheese, American butter, real parmesan cheese and many gringo foodstuffs like good peppercorns, spices and a great produce
department. The carniceria will custom cut steaks, has turkey thighs and in the far right hand corner huge and tiny plastic sacks sold by the kilo.
They also offer a punto de ventas cash back ATM card service at the register with a 3% rate.gallesram - 8-12-2013 at 02:52 PM
I knew you guys would help! DavidE, where is Mercado Sotres as I'm heading south through Vizcaino? It is before or after the 4 altos?DavidE - 8-12-2013 at 03:39 PM
I is much before (like 300 yards) before 4-altos. It will be on your right side as you come from Sn Ignacio. There is usually but not always a 2nd
hand merchandise stand obscuring an early view of the store from the street. The name of the store is high up on its front wall. The parking situation
isn't the best but patience is rewarded.
Vizcaino has grown into a major agricultural growing area. To complete your journey take a tour through town and see if anyone on the parallelos is
selling fresh stuff out of the back of a truck. If so, it will be dirt cheap.
On your way back, 12 km east on the right side of the highway well after the lonely Pemex gasolinera, there will be a sign for the CARACOL dairy. If
you make a right, and go 500 yds down the dirt road road, it ends with a security gate on your left. Park and tell the guard
"COMPRAS en EL ALMACEN"
They will call then open the gate. Follow the driveway to the office. Show your note with the words above to someone and they will direct you to the
refrigerated warehouse. Excellent prices on the freshest bottled milk, yogurt, bottled drinks, cold cuts, cheeses, chorizo in Baja California Sur. I
have purchased fresh whole milk with an expiration date marked 10 days in the future. Sadly there is no real butter. Take a good assortment of loose
small bills and change.
If you should make a LEFT turn at the intersection to the highway that goes to Bahia Asuncion and Turtle Bay go about one mile and look on your left.
There will be a small farmacia with natural medicines and remedies. An outstanding little place.Bajahowodd - 8-12-2013 at 03:59 PM

Having seen a whole bunch of Kirkland products in hotels and restaurants up and down the peninsula, I have always wondered just who is the inveterate
entrepreneur who apparently buy gobs of merchandise from either Ensenada or Cabo, and delivers it along the entirety of the peninsula.windgrrl - 8-12-2013 at 04:12 PM
We've shopped at the store on the highway. It has all the basics. We have also shopped at the store near the mission, just past the mechanic's place.
It had a more interesting selection of Mexican items including one of the best coconut bars I have ever had! There was also a gorgeous green heron
wading in a bit of water in the parking lot.gallesram - 8-12-2013 at 04:24 PM
Great stuff everyone; thanks again!shari - 8-12-2013 at 04:44 PM
the San Ignacio store on the highway is excellent for central baja standards anyway. We shop there instead of Vizcaino if we are in San IgnacioMula - 8-12-2013 at 05:06 PM

Called "La Huerta".Ateo - 8-12-2013 at 08:09 PM
The store on the highway rules. I stopped there before Scorpion Bay last month. Vegetables, beer, fruit, yogurt, beer, water, Jimador, bread, canned
items.............pretty much anything you need to survive and put on a party.Mulegena - 8-12-2013 at 08:23 PM
Minor hijack, please pardon.
Ateo, did you go to Scorpion Bay via Bahia San Ignacio and south? If so, how was the road? Did you/are you gonna do a trip report?Paulina - 8-12-2013 at 09:10 PM

We really like the highway store too.

Paulina, that building appears to be the former 'parador' (rest stop/ snack bar) next door to the gas station?Paulina - 8-13-2013 at 07:48 AM
The Supermercado in that photo is next to the Pemex station. I'm assuming it is the same market that others are referring to on the highway. If not,
we still really like this market.

Hey Mulegena . . . it was this store a few years ago I found palm honey. Nearly water white, it is perhaps in the top five of the world. Never
since.BajaBlanca - 8-13-2013 at 10:01 AM
Palm honey? Sounds good, let me see if I cant hunt some down.
Aren't we all lucky with the stores that are just great now?
That store next to Pemex does have a lot of stuff.Mulegena - 8-13-2013 at 01:20 PM
Palm Honey, omYummy!
and sweets made of mango, papaya, grapefruit and (shhh! its illegal) barrel cactus
and fresh hand-crafted Ranch Cheese
Baja's da bomb, isn't she?
and yes, the photo of the SuperMercado in Paulina's picture is the one I referred.
For Central Baja its pretty darn good.
Now, I want to find that palm honey... creamy white color, eh? Wow!Paulina - 8-13-2013 at 01:29 PM

Mulegena,
Regarding illegal sweets, are you referring to "biznaga" the barrel cactus candy?

Yes, Paulina. Someone brought a taste to my husband once with a, "Shhhh". I'd never heard of biznaga candy and I don't think its made very often by
the rancheros. I mention it in reference to the rich close-to-the-land culture that still thrives here. Even the city-folk have family who still live
on the ranchos and keep the connections to the earthy way of life.
Personally, I don't like any of the sweet, sticky candy they make down here and prefer to enjoy the wonderful fruit au natural-- one of the great
treats of living here year-round is the gorgeous tree-ripened fruit and the flowering trees in everyone's yard come summertime.
Its neat to know that honey can be made from the date palm fruit. My neighbor's trees are heavy-laden right now and should be ripe in about a month!
Its fun to poke around the local markets like the one on the highway in San Ignacio. You can find all sorts of delights. We were up in the mountains
last weekend and found really cool brooms made out of palm. Bought one, of course.bajacalifornian - 8-13-2013 at 02:08 PM
Not creamy. Clear. This'll have a tint but way lighter
than the usual two-buck chuck.
Find the keepers round Mulege.
From there, you may find unblended palm.
Get some comb.
And by all means, kindly give me a call.
P.S. A perfectly clear honey is defined as "water white".

Yes. Did a trip report. Search for San Juanico by Ateo.
The road was in decent shape. But I took the salt flats shortcut to Datil, then into scorp. Was ok. Washboard always sucks. U2u me if you have
questions.
