Cell phones in Baja

larryC - 8-14-2013 at 01:11 PM

I used to be the last person in the world without a cell phone. Can't say that any more. Just got an ATT phone but was wondering about making calls when I am in Baja and calling a Mexican number. Do I dial the mexican number as if I am in the US, with all the 011 52 and all that or just treat it as a local call?

If you have a US phone and number i believe you would have to call the mx country code.

I have an AT&T phone with a Mexican plan. It knows where I am...even though its a 415 area code, it knows where I am. I just dial the local number.

when you're in baja, it's probably cheaper to buy an inexpensive mexican cell and just pay for minutes to call mexican numbers.

i paid $ 50.00 U.S. for the phone and buy 200 pesos worth of minutes as i need them.

Depends on your AT&T plan. If you have a pay-as-you-go GoPhone it comes with a cheap Mexico plan. If you have an Android or iPhone, much more expensive to call from Mexico. (30-day minimum plan, or high per/call charges). Go to the AT&T website and look for international plans.

When you are in Mexico, Elizabeth is correct, your phone knows where you are , so you just dial the local area code and number. AT&T partners with Telcel.

If you have a smart phone, don't forget to turn off data roaming, or you'll incur some steep, unexpected charges unless you have purchased a data plan for Mexico.

If you are planning on spending a fair amount of time in Baja, I agree that you might want to consider the purchase of the cheapest Telcel phone and "OXXO" minutes.

If you are calling a Mexican cell phone you have to dial a 44 if local or a 45 if outside the locality - I think.

No, not usable in Bahia that I know of. I just need to meet someone in Ensenada when I go through and wasn't sure how to make a call. I'll just try dialing the number he gave me and see what happens.

I think it's 044.....area code........phone number. That's what you do here anyway.

Hi Larry- I have ATT and have used it to call both in Baja and while in mainland Mexico. To make a call while in Mexico to a Mexico # you need to dial 052 plus the area code and number. I agree that the phone knows where you are located but the call will try to dial the US without the country code. I'm sure you know but to dial the US from Mexico (with the ATT phone) you need to press the "O" (operator) which is also the +and than the area code and number. I think you will like coverage you get with ATT- obviously we didn't get coverage in the most remote areas but always got a signal when anywhere near a decent sized city.

Wow, thanks for posting this! Very useful! I got a Mexican Land Line in my house and it took me forever to learn how to use it correctly.

I can tell you exactly what will happen :)
You will get nailed with steep roaming charges on your US phone with US plan. That is - assuming you dial the correct sequence of zeroes, code etc. Would be cheaper to throw a coin in Ladatel public phone - there is plenty of those in Ensenada.

I am on worldwide roam with AT&T and can call anywhere in a country without the country code but but I generally use it anyway in Mexico.

better with at&t i do believe. my verizon phone experience is dismal. i have telcel now for mexico, and i can text to usa.

Just program your phone with the entire international-formatted numbers... so if you're calling (619) 555-1212 you'll put it in as +16195551212 (usually the + is either on the star or the zero key). If you're calling (664) 123-4567 you would put it in as +526641234567 if it's a landline and +5216641234567 if it's a cell phone. Works in either country—the network translates the + into the international access code—and doesn't incur international long distance charges unless it's actually int'l long distance.
