Blue screen of Death

bacquito - 8-24-2013 at 06:13 PM

I have an HP laptop and recently experienced the computer shutting down and going to a blue screen that advises problems with the computer's soft ware/hardware and therefor shuts down I've taken the computer to Best Buy twice and the computer continues to go to Blue screen.
I've reviewed the problem on internet and apparently it is not an unheard of problem.
The computer is not a year old and I did purchase extended warranty so I hope the problem gets resolved.
Has any Nomad had similar problems?

Years ago... and yes, it is exactly what you called it: The Blue Screen of Death!

Yes, it happened a lot with my last laptop that was a Dell. A part of the problem was that the Tel-Cel Banda Ancha software conflicted with some other software, or so they told me. The Geek Squad also told me that it happens when the laptop overheats --- I don't know.
But it only happened when we were in Baja and while using our Banda Ancha. Lots of other problem with the Dell.

Love my new Asus computer --- HATE windows 8, but it is better with the shell.

My HP laptop croaked after only 18 months....yes, that blue screen of death.....mine was a failed mother board, and a lot of them did it.

I read all about it on an HP blog.
It wasn't worth replacing the part, it cost as much as a new laptop.

Go to google, enter your computer model and a whole raft of stuff will pop up.

Baquito – I feel your pain. I have an HP Pavilion DV6700 that served me faithfully for a few years until that fateful day I too experienced the dreaded BSOD. Interestingly enough immediately prior to the BSOD I would lose sound and mic functionality. I’m some what geeky and made it my mission to track down and fix this insidious and elusive failure using all the common HP and web recommended diagnostics and corrective actions. I spent countless hours updating and reinstalling drivers, performing memory and HD tests – the same tests and troubleshooting methods and techniques that I’m you’ve done or will do. After each software repair my trusty companion seemed to returned to full performance and our cybernetic romance resumed – until the nefarious BSOD returned to break my heart once again. And again. And again. Sadly, my HP became so undependable I had to replace it with a very pedestrian Think Pad – the same bullet proof model that my work issued to me. Today, my DV6700 sits on a dusty bookshelf next to the scrapbook of my prom photos, *sigh*.

My friend, there is an epilog to my story. I discovered the true root cause of my laptop woes once I disassembled it and saw the burn marks and melted cables. The problem was traced to an over heating GPU caused by a manufacturing assembly/design defect that failed to diffuse the heat generated by the graphics chip set. There are reports that both Nvidia and HP were very aware of this defect early on but took no actions to correct the problem. My own laptop was well out of warranty when my first BSOD occurred and HP was zero help. Today, there are countless websites devoted to this increasingly common Pavilion problem and a thriving aftermarket business dedicated the remedy of the GPU over heat issue.

I hope your laptop problem is diagnosed quickly and turns out to be an easy fix. In the meantime, do more web research on the problems associated with your HP model. Since you’re still under the warranty plan have Best Buy and HP make good on their promise and if necessary replace the machine entirely. Good luck. tx ws

In my entire laptop computer lifetime I've had 3 computers, all Toshiba, no problems with any of them.......maybe I shouldn't have typed that out loud, don't want to jinx the 5 year old computer I have now....

I don't remember that anyone ever told me that you should regularly clean the cooling fan in the back corner of a laptop... But its surprising how much faster the computer runs after blowing the dust and cobwebs out of that unit... I have also found that if I keep it clean the BSD seems to not show itself anymore... Also keeping the back of the laptop up with airflow under it for the cooling fan seems to hellp...
My ole buddy computer guru retired from xerox clued me into doing this sometime back...
then again some some computers just crap out no matter what.

I had the same problem...
had to buy more memory

its easy to upgrade
open the back...unplug the card
insert the new card

easy fix

buy the memory card on ebay...cheaper...by a lot

edit...oh yea the hp only has one card so double what you have already

and I have an hp too...its not the computer...its windows 8
saving stuff for later use

Hello;
If the notebook is newly purchased and you can return it, do so. If not to either, you can discover whether it is a soft error or hard error by the info contained in the BSOD dump message. If that is something you do not feel comfortable with and you still need to fix it yourself, try locating to system recovery CD that should have come with the notebook.

This CD will reload the original operating system. You should be able to reinstall the OS and keep your data intact. Here's the kicker, if when attempting to load the bootable system CD you still get the BSOD, that would indicate the problem is hardware and not software.

hope this helps, please verify any process steps that you take with the manufacturer as data lost is always possible.

We had exactly the same problem that you describe, and our "fix" was exactly the same. Good show!!!

Get a new one. I have mid level Dell and it hasn't blue screen in two years.

Oh, and pick your porn site more carefully.

Blue screen of death is a sign of a major problem. It can be caused by several conditions, from conflicts to corupt files. Follow aquachico advise in above post. Or open thru your bios, then run in safe mode, then check for conflicts. If you are not comfortable with that either take it to a shop or buy online support who can walk you thru, then access your computer remotely and maybe solve the problem.

bacquito - 8-26-2013 at 07:25 AM

Thanks to all. I am somewhat relieved to find I am not the only person with this problem.

Glad to see you took my (and a couple of others') advice, Diana. I've had my Asus for two years now...no problems. Of course, mine came with Windows 7. I will never buy anything with Windows 8.

Yes, thank you. I have the shell that makes it more like Windows 8, but I am also considering having Windows 7 installed and kick 8 out completely! I hear they have something in the works for 8, but we will see.
