Drying out triggerfish skull

dizzyspots - 8-25-2013 at 08:48 AM

Sooo...I saved the skull from a good size trigger. Looking for techniques to "skeletonize" it.
Tried boiling the last one and wound up with a pot o'bones

Looking for ideas...
living in Arizona, I assume the sun will be my new friend...any hints

let it sit for a few weeks where the critters won't get it.

I used to dry/clean shark jaws by wiring them to a fence post or bush on the ground and letting the ants do the work.......

ants will help clean things up a little

I left mine in the sun, they stink for a long time.

I'm with the sun crowd. The stink will stop, eventually.

Ants , yellowjackets , crayfish , dermestid beetles are your friends.

I wouldn't boil anything but soaking it occasionally could help

I think I would try various types of ants nests . Maybe put a weighted srceened box over the fish and ants to keep it from being carried off by a cat , coyote or coon and let them do the work.

How about posting some photos of your progress?
