The bank of Mexico has released a new 20 peso coin. It is very similar to the 10 peso coin so be aware! The differences lie in the size and the designs on the coin.
There are three designs used on the new 20 peso coin. The first celebrating 100 years of the Mexican Army with a stylized image of a soldier in a helmet, the second is a representation of Octavio Paz, Nobel Laureate for Literature in 1990 and the third design features a younger profile of Paz with the inscription Todo es presencia, todos los siglos son este presente. (Everything has presence; every century is today’s present). Regardless of which design ends up in your pocket, your twenty pesos remains perfect for a couple of tacos.

i can't wait for the 100 peso coin. it should weigh about a pound!

Haven't seen much of those 1000 Peso notes. I've only seen one....ever.

Mexico does have good looking currency.

I carry 20 x 1000 peso notes at all times to buy meds and tires ... due to the massively fluctuating currency.

I prefer my 20 peso coin from 1918 that has the Aztec Calender on it. Don't think I will spend it. :biggrin:

Actually Woody the 100 Mexican Peso coin is just about the weight of a US Silver dollar.....
It weights 33 grams, is 39 mm in diameter and the center contains 1/2 oz. of silver.........

I have 3 plus a 50 peso coin and several 10 peso coins.....very pretty coins all. These are the old gold ones I am referring to. Jim

The coins look alike, and even using reading glasses I have to be careful handling change.

They make nice jewelry and have been a good investment.

Jeeezo....those small centavo coins ....the little Qaxacan kids in Maneadero won't even pick them up off the ground.

I have heard Mexicans complain about the US paper money for the same reason --- it all looks the same. :lol::lol:

They already did... they're doing dead presidents on the dollar coins, like they did states (and now national parks, whoopee) on the quarters. I've got a Lincoln, a Jefferson and a Johnson in my pocket (rimshot).

I've never seen these 20-peso coins though they've existed for a while. Everyone always gives me the polymer 20-peso note instead. And 1000-peso bills? I don't even want the 500-peso ones... nobody will take them!

It seems as though merchants feel it is the responsibility of the customer to provide the exact change instead of the responsibility of the merchant to carry adequate change in their tills. Am I alone in thinking this?

Not alone with this thought, although the more modern businesses know the need for working with a bank.
It's just best to have the change in the small stores. These owners live day to day with the money they bring in.

I've seen tourists try to buy coffee with a hundred dollar bill in Paty's. That's just plain silly "big bill dumping."
Anyway, the big bills can usually be dealt with at the gas stations with a purchase.

Didn't think of that, Dennis. You make sense.

I will say even in the big stores, many times they do seem to think that the customer is obligated to provide exact change. But, what you said about the little guy makes perfect sense. I've got to lighten up.
