ALERT ALERT. Juliette has formed very close to Los Cabos

 Pages:  1

bajajudy - 8-28-2013 at 09:51 AM

Definitely looks like rain right now.
They are calling for tropical storm force rain and wind tonight in BCS.
So don't put those mops away yet.

The water sure seemed cooler this morning. Maybe just because it is so cloudy.

monoloco - 8-28-2013 at 10:03 AM

The cool weather sure has been nice, 81º and overcast here right now, with a pleasant breeze off the ocean.

Eli - 8-28-2013 at 10:54 AM

I think I got a preview of what is coming your way, yesterday and the day before just poured here in Oaxaca. The Sun is out today, but I am still hanging out in sweat pants and socks at mid day.
Anyway, here's hopin for a good soaker without wind for home.

Mulegena - 8-28-2013 at 11:16 AM

The rooftops of Mulege got a good pounding this morning after a cooler-than-usual night with clouds and lightning. The dirt roads are again mud puddles and all the kids in high school got the day off.

rhintransit - 8-28-2013 at 12:19 PM

three inches in the house from last storm, and the lagoon is filled to the top. more rain on the way. frig, washer dead, but have a small borrowed one and ac/electricity and water. sandbagged in. am more fortunate than many in my area AV, Loreto Bay, Nopolo, Loreto), so no complaints.
batten down, stay safe.

Eli - 8-28-2013 at 12:30 PM

rhintransit, I was wondering if you made it home and how your place did with this last rain, sounds like you got kind of hit there, but your attitude prevails the damages.

bajajudy - 8-28-2013 at 01:24 PM

That little blob just became 100 o/o chance of becoming a tropical depression
AND it is just few miles south of me here in San Jose.
If you are in Los Cabos, get ready for some rain and wind....possibly tropical storm strength.

bajajudy - 8-28-2013 at 01:29 PM

I know that some of you don't do links but here is one on this storm which went from 0 to 100 percent probability in less than an hour
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo_epac.shtml

probably not a hot link....why doesn't my ipad have brackets so I can use HTML

vandenberg - 8-28-2013 at 01:33 PM

Posted fine Judy.

BFS - 8-28-2013 at 01:35 PM

Time for more buckets

It's in there - tap the 123 key to switch to numbers, then tap the #+= key to get more symbols. Also pressing and holding down on some keys brings up more options.;)

Bajagypsy - 8-28-2013 at 01:47 PM

OH my! That was fast, I checked that site not even an hour ago! Hope everyone stays safe!

DENNIS - 8-28-2013 at 02:00 PM

Thinking good, safe thoughts for you folks down there. Remember what they say, "There aint no atheists in foxholes."

Eli - 8-28-2013 at 02:04 PM

Tropical storms named Juliette tend to raise the fine hairs on the back of my neck. Last time a Juilette came to town, she kicked the holy tar out of us. Ay, yi, yi!!!!! I will be watching from afar.

Bill Collector - 8-28-2013 at 02:04 PM

Thanks Judy for the heads up. We are getting our boat to the Marine in La Ribera. Winds picking up, seas are nasty, no rain yet but we see it coming.
We are in Buena Vista

cocoscabana - 8-28-2013 at 02:16 PM

Juliette...Please stay away from Mulege!!! The last bad ones all started with a J!!! Juan...Jimena...

Udo - 8-28-2013 at 03:05 PM

I noticed at the bottom of the written forecast statement that projections of more than 5 days are only "experimental" in 2013.

chuckie - 8-28-2013 at 03:24 PM

I think the forecast is for today.....

My understanding is that anything over 5 days is experimental.

REALLY dark here
No rain or wind yet......

Bajahowodd - 8-28-2013 at 03:56 PM

Just thinking that any storm that formed so high in latitude has no chance of growing big enough to do more than drop rain.

bajajudy - 8-28-2013 at 03:59 PM

I think you are wrong.
Have you looked at the sat pix?

Hope you are correct, but fear that that may not be the case.

----even in the upper latitudes, they all have a slight chanch of becoming a "Kathleen" or a "Doreen" like back in the '70's. Those were dooozzy's!!! (I was in El Centro, then)

barry

wessongroup - 8-28-2013 at 04:24 PM

The wife was El Centro ... when that one came through .... 3' of water at the motel where she was saying ... a real mess ... don't think they ever put the rail back in .. she was on the second floor

Just looked:

"The San Diego and Arizona Railroad was eventually taken over by Southern Pacific. It suffered a series of calamities starting in 1970, when a tropical storm wiped out the tracks in the desert. Trestle fires and tunnel collapses have also bedeviled several smaller railroad companies that took over the tracks under leases from the San Diego MTS."

Company Plans to Re-Open Railroad Line to El Centro

http://imperialbeach.patch.com/groups/business-news/p/invest...

Still a lot that can be moved by rail between the two cities .... good news

[Edited on 8-28-2013 by wessongroup]

bajalinda - 8-28-2013 at 04:25 PM

So far all is calm here at La Aguja - but the storm track shows Juliette coming straight smack at us. It's been cloudy all day with very dark clouds to the east (towards La Paz) off and on. Don't know if La Paz has had any rain or not. In any case, shutters are up, water tanks filled, etc........would be really nice if the power stays on......and we just get a nice soaking rain a la Bajahowodd. We'll see.

woody with a view - 8-28-2013 at 04:25 PM

Those skies do look threatening...link to CSL webcams:

Hoping the storm takes a big left turn soon.

No surprise, and in the best interests of everyone.

Mulegena - 8-28-2013 at 06:04 PM

Governor Marcos Covarrubias just announced that school classes have been suspended
in all of Baja California Sur for tomorrow, August 29th due to Tropical Storm Juliette.

We stocked up on food, candles and flashlights again here in Mulege.
Roads may be passable tomorrow but they're sure gonna be muddy.
The river this afternoon is high-tide and in-coming with white-capped waves.
Hang on (and get out of your river houses) we're in for another dodgy night.

monoloco - 8-28-2013 at 06:21 PM

In the last Juliette, we had 26" of rain here in Pescadero.

Gaucho - 8-28-2013 at 06:32 PM

I'm down here now right behind Puerto Los Cabos and the wind just started to kick up. Light rain and very dark skies.

Katiejay99 - 8-28-2013 at 06:37 PM

The latest sat images looks like the system is heading west out to sea and may miss us here in Todos Santos. We have very overcast skies, light wind and intermittent rain. Quite lovely.

monoloco - 8-28-2013 at 06:39 PM

It seems like from the wind direction here, NNE, that the storm is going up the east side of the peninsula, usually when they go up the Pacific side we get a south to southwest wind.

Gaucho - 8-28-2013 at 06:44 PM

It's a steady 20 knots right now in San Jose w/ light rain...

bajajudy - 8-28-2013 at 06:54 PM

Gusting to 30.
Pretty steady 15
Light rain

my link above agrees!

bajajudy - 8-28-2013 at 07:04 PM

My Wundermap agrees
A big cell just went east of us

BTW
That is by far the most helpful weather app that I have.

bajajudy - 8-28-2013 at 07:58 PM

Lotsa wind, not much rain.
She has gone by on the Pacific side.
That cell must have been the storm breaking up after hitting land.
Sure blew through here...still blowing 30-35.

WIND REPORTS FROM THE SOUTHERN BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA INDICATE
THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 50 MPH...85 KM/H...WITH
HIGHER GUSTS. STRONGER WINDS ARE LIKELY OCCURRING OVER AREAS OF
HIGHER TERRAIN ON THE SOUTHERN BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA.

We got about .75" last night and it's starting to rain again this morning. The place is a mess, but no major damage and I still have the solar panels on the roof.

Mula - 8-29-2013 at 07:11 AM

No wind gauge in Lopez, so don't know how strong the winds were, but I don't think much as nothing was flying around.

What kind of weather forecaster do you have monoloco?

Wind came up at about 2:15 this morning and the rain blew in about 4:30.

Quit about 7:30 and did not leave enough water to make my street a river, so I'm guessing only maybe 1 1/2" or so fell here.

Now it's all quiet and very overcast.

bajajudy - 8-29-2013 at 07:13 AM

Rain, no wind
Very dark

Now it's all quiet and very overcast.
We have a Davis Vantage Pro II weather station that uploads to Weather Underground. You can see the data here:
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?...
The weather station name is Pescadero Heights and is the only west coast station online between Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada.

willyAirstream - 8-29-2013 at 07:45 AM

Heavy rains just stopped. River road is mud and water, deep. I`m ready to evacuate, but will wait 15 minutes for next noaa report.
No winds, looks like it could pour again any minute.

cabobaja - 8-29-2013 at 07:58 AM

Todos Santos is a mess. Electric on and off. Rain coming down good!

It was a hell of a night. Now, a lot of clean-up to do.

Bob and Susan - 8-29-2013 at 08:02 AM

on the bay we got a heavy downpour but most is going north

I figure about 1 inch the last hour

mtnpop - 8-29-2013 at 08:05 AM

Now just hope the creek don't rise in good ole Mulege... Probably just wishful thinking from 1800 miles away...
Today is the 8th anniversary of Katrina on the gulf coast... Of course that's on the national news but nothing about Juliette...
Take care friends and neighbors... No one is in residence in our park...So no worries there...

pauldavidmena - 8-29-2013 at 08:35 AM

I'm sorry to hear about the damage in Todos Santos but am glad that the storm has passed.

willyAirstream - 8-29-2013 at 08:35 AM

shari - 8-29-2013 at 09:03 AM

Hi all...I am posting from BajaGypsy's place...only one small puddle from the last storm so it's all good here, for others..Casa Pargo was completely fine.

We are in the process of putting plywood over the windows...the wind was stronger than forecasted in the last storm and this one has higher winds..better safe than sorry although i dont see much movement here at all in town preparation wise...guests are leaving to avoid the storm.

The last storm claimed the life of a friend...heart attack and this morning claimed the lives of another whole family in a car crash, brother of one of our workers...been a rough few days so lets hope this storm cools it's heels a bit before it reaches us but it is moving very quickly and should be here early evening....it's calm, hot and humid right now....eerie.

Our phone line is down and the telmex guy hasnt been out to repair it. Look forward to more reports from the west coast...Mag Bay area in particular..be safe amigos.

David K - 8-29-2013 at 09:11 AM

Sorry for your loss Shari. Hang in there!

Mula - 8-29-2013 at 09:13 AM

Shari,
I have not heard a thing from San Carlos, so don't know how they fared.
This Juliette had more winds for us - but no trees down, etc, and less rain than Ivo.

Only about 3 hours of rain this morning - hard rain.

There seems to be a lot of junk following Juliette, so we are having periodic rains and periods of light and then dark clouds.

Udo - 8-29-2013 at 09:15 AM

My condolences to the families loss.

bajalinda - 8-29-2013 at 09:39 AM

The wind picked up here last night around 12:30am, then rain, at times very heavy, during the night. It has just started raining again here (La Aguja 10:40am) - very lightly - pretty much straight down, not much wind to speak of. Mula, you may be seeing this in a hour or 2....

Uncertain of the accuracy of this weather station in Puerto San Carlos - but I'll still share the link:

Bajagypsy - 8-29-2013 at 09:55 AM

Shari,
Thank you for the update on our place.
Our thoughts and heart felt sympathies go out to the families of the people who have passed.

BajaLuna - 8-29-2013 at 11:17 AM

Shari, thanks so much for taking the time to keep us in the loop, when you are so busy, I'm sure. Really appreciate it!

Omigosh, so sorry to hear the news of the loss of that family, that is heart wrenching. Envisioning healing for everyone.

BajaNomad - 8-29-2013 at 11:18 AM

While this seems like it might be more Ivo related than Juliette, a couple of pictures just posted to FB by Mike Younghusband:

"To all my Loreto and Baja California friends. A little sad news. After hundreds of years the San Javier Cave paintings are gone. (first pic) The wall they were on is also missing. The damage from the recent storms is devastating."

(click the picture for full resolution)

"The road to San Javier is destroyed. (second pic) Nothing can get through. Heavy equip is parked close to the area with not much in the way of options."

Yes, so sad.

I sure hope they can get to the village soon.

San Javier road

tehag - 8-29-2013 at 11:30 AM

Ivo did this on Saturday/Sunday last. I'm guessing it will be closed for a while.

BajaLuna - 8-29-2013 at 11:33 AM

OH NOOOO, that is awful about the cave paintings, such a sacred piece of history. I am sooo thankful I saw them this past Spring, but so sad that others in the future will not be able to partake in such an important piece of tribal history.

Mother Nature can be so darn cruel at times, UGH!

Mexitron - 8-29-2013 at 12:32 PM

That is friggin' amazing tehag.

mtnpop - 8-29-2013 at 02:01 PM

Talked with friends in Mulege a little after 9 this morning... Things were wet and muddy but no flood at that time... even tho it was raining still...
We have not seen any updates since then and we can only hope no news is good news but it seems to work the opposite...
looking at the Sat. coverage there have been big waves of rain all up and down the BAJA all day...
Can only hope all of them are out of harms way....

willyAirstream - 8-29-2013 at 02:08 PM

Mtnpop..Mulege is fine. Rain stopped around 8, no flooding, roads are muddy, but all passable. Everyone relaxed once the mtn ranchos reported no mtn rains. See my post above.
I`m leaving everything packed and ready to evacuate, just in case this next storms get strong.

Hey WillardBoy...

So, let's get with it...
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Glad you guys made out safe. Like some weather models predicted "most of the action would pass to the south and go east". Loreto got hammered.

I do NOT trust the existing event coming up the coast at the moment. Let's hope the coriolis effect over rides the steering currents and blows this thing inland near Puerto Vallarta. If it comes north and hugs the coast it's going to have 30C water to feed and bathe in. There is a chance this critter can get hair on its chest. Another huge dump of rain on already saturated ground can terrorize roads, trails and highways. IMHO Keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center website.

CaboDreamer - 8-29-2013 at 02:41 PM

These photos were taken last October of the pinturas that are now below the river bed. You can gage where the paintings are by the sign in the first photo.

After last nights wind reports from Todos Santos, we decided to cover the windows this time...the wind has just now picked up at 7 pm but the sky has cleared and looks like Juliette is offshore of us now...maybe....or has yet to arrive...how are things in Abreojos?

Here I am stressed out about the coming storm...hahahahaha! It's really muggy today

Wow, what a night in Todos Santos! Town looks like a war zone. Electricity finally came on at 6pm. It was a violent, damaging south wind. The rain was not a problem
Our palapa over the garage took flight and landed 80 yards away. So lucky it didnt hit ours or someone elses house or a car. That thing must weigh 800+pounds. I still cant find the bathroom skylight. Lots of roof tiles gone and the recycling is at the bottom of the pool. The plants all look like they went 12 rounds with Tyson. Loks like a loooong cleanup weeked ahead. On the bright side a turtle laid 129 eggs in a nest out front and the waves were firing!

msteve1014 - 8-29-2013 at 06:59 PM

It is cloudy and calm in La Bocana. We got very little rain this afternoon and the wind blew for a few hours, that's it so far

WOW what a great attitude! Congrats to that turtle and may the eggs all hatch and the babies make it back to the sea.

May you find that skylight. Mother nature rules and is so unpredictable.
