Buying Appliances

I'm going to start moving (in a lot of trips!) into my new place in Tijuana next, and will need to buy a stove and refrigerator.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to a good place to buy them?

Is there any way you can bring down some used appliances? There's tons of good ones available around San Diego.
You'll start getting suggestion about Segundas, but it's a gamble and their guarantees are useless.
Keep in mind, stoves must be converted to Propane if they're used.

There's a place in the Los Globos segunda area of Escondido that sells dented/ scratched appliance returned to Sears in the US. I bought a large French door refrigerator with freezer on the bottom for less than 1/2 of what Sears sells it for in the US.

This is impossible, since I'm pretty much moving everything myself, except for a few items that I'll have movers do. If I bought a refrigerator in San Diego, I would have to pay to have I delivered to my place, then I would have to pay duty on it.

The stove, I can live without for a while, since I have lots of small appliances and a BBQ.

Thank you Gypsy Jan, I have his information and sent him an email, but it came back, and I'm planning to get a prepaid Mexican cell phone, but not until after I get there.

I need to get a fridge fairly quickly, because I have a 5.0cuft freezer full of meat that I vacuum packed with my seal-a-meal, that I'll be sneaking down every trip. I read that all food has to be in the original packaging, and it isn't.

My new landlord said to make sure that it's an energy star fridge, to keep the CFE bill down.

I'm going to start moving stuff next week, and all except what I can't carry myself, will be done in my trusty Astrovan. My cat will go on the last trip with me the day we walk out the door to make it official.

How is Sr. Capuchino's English? One post says good, another says not so good. I can try to get a prepaid cell phone when I'm in TJ next week, and call him.

Sr. Capuchino and I finally made contact. I have a friend that lives in Rosarito that acted as the go-between. It was easier for her to call for me, since she speaks fluent Spanish, but she got his email address for me to make it easier.

I told him that I wanted either a 14, 16 or 18cu ft refrigerator, preferably an energy star if possible. He said Ok, it'll probably be on Saturday.

True to his word, he delivered an 18cu ft Kenmore Coldspot side by side refrigerator to me Saturday. The price was $220. It has a few scratches and dents in it, but I'm not picky.

We talked about a stove (and gas tank) and when he asked what color I wanted, my reply was that I'm not picky, as long as it works, I don't care. I told him that I'll be in touch when I get another paycheck.

In the meantime, my next door neighbor called him about getting a refrigerator, and I gave his information to my landlord if any new tenants want to buy any appliances.

His English is passable, and he kept apologizing for it, but I told him that it wasn't a problem. I call my Spanish "pidgin" Spanish, and I haven't had much of a problem with it yet.

There are 2 costs to owning a refrigerator. The purchase price and the CFE bill. Over the life of the refrigerator the CFE bill will be many times more than the original purchase price. In the last 10 years there has been major improvements in the energy efficiency of refrigerators. It is rarely the best economic option to buy older, used refrigerators or AC equipment. Buy the best and only cry once.

Buying new all depends on one's budget. The refrigerator is an energy star, so it should be ok, and Sr. Capuchino also knows his business. I also have a small freezer that isn't an energy star, but uses very little electricity, only about $1.00 per month.

Also, CFE use depends on how the electricity is used, just like other places. I conserve here in San Diego, and I'll being conserving in Tijuana.

End up with a "Mabe" stove and it'll drive you nuts. The burner controls are psychotic and the oven control is inconveniently indexed "1 thru 6". Doesn't matter anyway - "2" can be 150F one day and 750F the next. The burner knobs are great. Horizontal is full-blast and all the limit of "minimum" and what do you get? Minimum fire? Oh hell no. You get maybe 70% of full flame. No less. Never. All of the six Mabe stoves I have owned acted the same way.

At home I gave away the last MAYBE stove and got a Maytag. Yeah and 350F means something near 350 not 3,500

I haven't gotten to the stove part yet, I can live without one for a while, since I have some appliances and a bbq that I can use in the meantime. Next on the agenda is getting the rest of my stuff there and a magic jack plus. The stove will come later.
