Grand Canyon Trip during Ivo

tripledigitken - 8-30-2013 at 09:44 AM

We had this trip planned before Ivo was born. We decided to go in spite of possible drama getting there. As it turned out no problems getting there or back. The effects of Ivo were felt though, as it rained 3 of the four days. Photo opportunities were rare. Nat Geo quality photos usually are taken when the visibility is 200+ miles, it was less than 100 when the clouds parted. Timing is everything when visiting the Grand Canyon.

Here is a brief opening of the cloud cover.

This scenic locator wasn't of much use while we were there

We drove over to Cameron the second day and found some sun

This is a Hogan, traditional Navajo shelter, where the front door always faces to the east

The EZ up came in handy this trip. We set it up as our kitchen by putting it up over the picnic table.

On the last full day after lunch the skies parted and we planned sunset at the Desert View Tower.

You can see the haze in the photo, but I was more than happy just to see the canyon floor.

There is a silver lining to haze, silhouette shots.....

By the way, the south rim is full of Elk. Mule deer were also in our campground at sunrise on our last day.

All photos taken with a Sony NEX 7, lenses used:

18-55mm Sony kit lens
24mm Zeiss
19mm Sigma
55-210mm Sony

Nice!

willyAirstream - 8-30-2013 at 10:12 AM

Great pics. The silhouette one is especially beautiful. Nex7, huh, gotta ck that camera out.

DianaT - 8-30-2013 at 10:16 AM

You sure made the best use of the weather! Really nice. My 2nd favorite is the first one. I just like everything about it---color, weather, etc.

I said 2nd favorite because the silhouette one is OUTSTANDING.

John,

I'll trust your ID, I'm no hunter. I'll correct my post.

Thanks

I love all the photos you take Ken!

We super lucked out when we visited the canyon a few years ago, as it was one of those 200 mile days! We had a blast taking the Grand Canyon Railroad to it from Williams, as well.

Another one of those WOW pictures. Really makes one want to be there.

When we went there last year we stayed at a resort in Sedona and just did day trip to the canyon. Took lots of pictures but when we checked out from the resort I left the camera with all the pictures in our room and never got it back despite calls and emails to the resort. So I have no pictures and will just be content to enjoy yours.

That's a sad story. Don't imagine you will be giving them your business again.

Have a suggestion to you though. Arizona Highways has a Grand Canyon calendar that is worth getting, the 2014 is available now.

I think photobucket had a burp... you will see the photos eventually. I could not see them last night, but today I can see them.

DianaT - 8-31-2013 at 09:25 AM

I saw them last night, they were gone this morning, and they have returned with one change and they are as beautiful as before. Only one still missing is the MAGNIFICENT second silhouette.

Yes, Photobucket gave me some heartburn over the last 10 hours. I tweeked my library last night after I had made the post here, and found out this morning the post had crashed. I had to replace all the photos. I need a nap............

Some of the photos copied by posters are gone but the original photos are intact.

I usually post via SmugMug, but I have had to redesign that site as SmugMug completely changed their format which forces you to do some reorganizing. Until that process is completed I am using Photobucket temporarily. Or maybe not...........

Years ago I was shooting those trees at at Olmsted Point in Yosemite. I carried all of my equipment in a small backpack. At 10Pm,20 miles from home and 6 hours later I realized that I had none of my equipment with me. The Nikkor 105mm lens alone was worth $500. I turned around on hwy 680 and reached Olmsted around 3AM. The moon was bright that night as I scrambled across the boulders to the tree I last photographed. I had to be at work at 8AM. I drove out of the park but by the time I got near Groveland I couldn't stay awake any longer. So I pulled out the sleeping bag and crashed on the needles under some pine trees oblivious to any discomfort.

Not to change the subject but I just watched a Food Network special on Duarte's down in Pescadero. Used to be my favorite (out of town) place to go when I lived in Half Moon Bay.

Those are great photos, Ken. Few folks get to see the GC with weather going on, especially in the manner you did. Good eye and good shots. Thanks.

Couldn't agree more! I posted a review here of Duarte's a few years back.

Glad you liked the image! I do like his style of art too.
